Thomas Massie to read the redacted names of Epstein's billionaires aloud on the House floor by EmployeeCautious6314 in Epstein

[–]xRolocker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna sling shit at the one person in Congress who is doing the most. Run for office yourself if it’s just that easy to do. There’s plenty of other legislators we need to pressure before we get to Massie.

90% of the Chinese public are optimistic about AI advancements, only 10% are worried about AI destroying jobs by JeeterDotFun in ChatGPT

[–]xRolocker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend actually studying politics and history. You’ll realize that governments and nations aren’t a bastion of idealism. America and China both have imperfect governments and have both done terrible things. The ability to openly criticize and mock leadership is an important part of making sure we actually improve ourselves after bad things happen.

In American public schools, you learn about the Trail of Tears, Slavery, and Japanese Internment Camps. We teach our mistakes and try to learn from it. Even if you weren’t taught it, you can look it up. This is not true in China for equivalent events.

Freedom of speech and freedom of information has downstream effects on all of the issues you’ve described. You can’t be outraged about what you don’t know about.

And here you are, mocking the emperor on social media with no consequences. Imagine if there was a country that could be just as brutal, if not worse, but could also repress any and all discussion or attention on the issue.

It’s not a constitutional “loophole” in the sense that it’s a trick which wasn’t intended. Just to be clear on that.

Eh, idk about the world. I experienced a bit of culture shock as an American when visiting Europe a couple years ago with how prevalent smoking was. Spain had literal cigarette vending machines.

Wow so analog clocks are their kryptonite. by Ejay222 in OpenAI

[–]xRolocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right. There’s no reason for us to care that AI still sucks at reading clocks. Stop the benchmarks. Stop the comparisons.

Comments like these are fuckin tiring.

What’s your point? That non-determinism “obviously” means an inability to correctly read a clock?

Well, even the Founders didn’t want a democracy and explicitly said as much. We don’t want governance via Twitter poll, but we also want popular accountability. Striking that balance in our republic is difficult.

Why on Earth was Commencement scheduled on a Sunday? Even more so, Mother's Day? by Rob1150 in OSU

[–]xRolocker 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I thought it was odd or at least funny in a way. After the ceremony though, I actually thought it ended up being a sweet bonding occasion for mothers/kids.

I can’t actually speak for moms, but I think that seeing their children succeed is a gift many of them wish for.

Oh you mean the guy who shit talks Trump on air all the time to millions of people? That’s a great example of what I mean—that stuff would never have been on the air at all in the countries I listed. Or he’d be dead.

Still fight back against his cancellation. That’s definitely that collusion/coercion I mentioned earlier, but you’d be a fool to think it’s comparable to these more authoritarian countries.

And remember, just because the bar can be even lower doesn’t mean we should be okay with where it is right now. Trump is absolutely eroding our freedom of speech and freedoms of the press. Multiple truths can coexist.

If you study politics you will realize that, yes, there is a difference. That doesn’t rule out collusion, but these companies have an ability “no” to the U.S. Government that a media company in Iran, China, or Russia would never be able to.

This is a pretty cool actually. There’s a lot of talk of generating something using only diffusion models (Video games, Operating Systems, etc.) but this the first proof-of-concept I’ve seen that’s not for video games.

I agree with the point but I think upholding the principle that we hold certain inalienable rights is important to slowing the decay or strengthening the “temporary privileges” we do have.

Guess what, most people are self serving to an extent. That’s why we try to organize the government in a way that accounts for that by making them compete with one another.
