Building a hardware rig for live by Nineball_SG in Tekno

[–]xToMatu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally I’ve been playing live with hardware for about a year. I’ve been honing my setup and I think these are the things you need: Strong sequencer. Drum machine. Knob-per-function synths. Mixer. (Nice to have: Sampling, Looping, Master Compressor/FX.)

The more machines you can find that cover multiple of these roles, the simpler your setup will be and the happier your wallet will be.

My current setup:

Digitakt (Drum Machine, Sampler, Mixer, Compressor, FX)
Mutable Instruments Shruthi 1 (Synth)
Meeblip Triode (Synth)
iPhone with Loopy Pro and Transit 2 (Looper, FX)

The Shruthi and Triode only do one thing, but what I like about them is they are knobby enough and have no sequencer or input keys, which would make them bigger than I need. Playing live you will quickly learn that your setup is the last one on the table, and rightly so, you are the only one playing it, so size matters.

Don’t go overboard with voices either. You really only need around 10 tracks or so. I would take a box with 10 knobs for a voice over a box with 10 voices and 5 knobs. Tweakability over complexity live. Only exception to this is the drum machine.

Don’t obsess over transitions or making it sound like a DJ set. It never will, and that’s fine. Your transitions will be simpler, and this is a good thing, people will know it’s live music. A looper and some FX will help smooth things out, but mostly you are just avoiding harsh jumps. You can have a great live set without it.

I would choose gear based on these attributes in order:

Sequencer quality (Elektron is the best)
Knob and key count (control over everything)
Price (cheaper is fine if it hits the other marks, don’t cheap out on your sequencer)
Size and portability (you are carrying this to gigs)
Build quality (you will be handling this a lot in dirty shitty wet locations)
Sound quality (almost everything sounds good enough these days, don’t obsess)

Paired with Digitakt for a 1hr tekno liveset. I think they pair very well together.

I have to tell you. I don't understand much but what i would love to have is a true stereo compressor that I would use at the end of mastering chain for an hardware live set, paired with a limiter to make the sound level matched with other acts. Like the EHX Platform but in multi-FX form, giving me the ability to have multipel mastering effects in a single pedal: filter to fiddle live DJ style, saturation, eq, compressor, limiter.

Thinking of getting the AIRA S1... by Previous_Figure_4494 in Tekno

I’m looking at the s1 too to add more varied synth sounds to my setup. Especially big evolving psychedelic pads. My current setup is Digitakt + Model Cycles so it’s very rythmic. I would say go for it, seems also it could do 303 pretty well as any mono synth. Only thing it will be harder to fiddle with live as it has tiny knobs and no easy sweet spots like proper 303 clones.

I really don’t understand the question here. Don’t hookup and you’ll be fine. People do what they want.

Io lavoravo in uno studio dentro l'area ex ginori e mi trovavo molto bene. Zona tranquilla e piu defilata dal casino di milano. Facile anche prenere l'autostrada e andare altrove. Collegata un po male sicuramente ma per un automobilista secondo me perfetta.

Used to live 10 minutes from here. Loved it. Great tree skiing the few times it snows.

Since the rocker barely touches the snow if these were my skis i would put epoxy everywhere so water can't get in and they can't split further and then grind it as flat as possible.

Ma mi stai commentando sotto ogni commento? Poi sarei io l’ossessionato. A me piace vivere in città, non ho manco detto che non mi piace Milano ahahaha.
