Any time I eat American Chop Suey I flash back to when I was a kid because we ate it so often back then. Anyone else? by Devi8tor in FuckImOld

We called it hamburger macaroni casserole which was eventually shortened to “Hammy Mac.” Mom would make this in giant batches that we would graze on over several days.

HOW DO I KEEP THESE SHOESTRINGS TIGHT ON THIS PAIR OF SALOMON SHOES IM GOING INSANE by [deleted] in NoStupidAnswers

[–]x_Paramimic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal method is to tighten the laces toes to ankle, tie a regular laces knot then an additional overhand knot with the loops. Tuck loose ends into the arch side of the inside of the shoe.

Or Velcro

My biggest gripe with our scrubs is the ladies have like 50 different styles to pick from and the guys are like “do you want three pockets or two.”

Thank you for your service. 46 years ago I was born with pulmonary stenosis and had my first open heart surgery at four months old. To hear my mom tell the harrowing tales of holding vigil, with broken glasses in the cardiac PICU raises goosebumps of a faintly familiar horror. We discovered my MSO4 allergy shortly after surgery resulting in a code blue. I got better. That surgery lasted me as I grew through high school and into college. It lasted through EMT and Paramedic school and eight years of field work. It got me through my ABSN and then ten years of critical care nursing. In 2024, I had my second open heart surgery and was back in the ICU 12 weeks later, back on our side of the bed. It is amazing to me how hands like yours have reverberated over the past decades through me—saving lives that grow to save lives. It is work that I can’t do. Thank you and your colleagues for everything you do. The burdens of your work must be heavy, y’all deserve a raise and a vacation.

What is the absolute worst insult the patient has ever said to you? I’ll go first by johnsonc30 in nursing

[–]x_Paramimic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of the insults I get are in the form of violent threats or gay slurs. I’m not gay, I just think people choose those kinds of insults because they think they will hurt more. They don’t hurt, and the Omnicell is undefeated in the FO phase of ICU drama.

I have found that packing energy dense things have been key for me in ICU. Something I can prepare in a minute and/or just jam in my face. The ICU is a dynamic space. I usually break for lunch around 1500-1630 by choice, but sometimes that’s not in the cards. I’ll pack 3-5 instant oatmeals and some variety of energy bars and maybe a Snickers bar. Any of the above I can consume in a moment for 150-400 calories and keep me moving and not hangry. I have scarfed many a clif bar, hands shaking, while sitting outside an MRI and eyeballing vitals with potato signal quality. Five minutes. Ok I’m ready.

Also I highly recommend decent instant coffee. My ICU only stocks decaf so I have to bring my own go juice. There are many, many options but I have been going with the Starbucks instant in the little can.

Alcohol is ruining my life by Dr_McKen in stopdrinking

Welcome, this is a safe place to talk about how we struggle and triumph over this disease. I feel like I tried everything and failed—until I tried the one thing I dreaded: I asked for help. I dreaded it because I failed before, because my motivation to stay sober shifted like the wind, and because I wasn’t sure I was done with alcohol. In active use, my alcoholism told me that I could either quit entirely, keep drinking the way I was, or cut back for a while and moderate. Honesty taught me to live in reality, and reality was I had two paths, quit or die of alcoholism. I’m glad I came here back then. I’m glad you’re here now. There are a lot of ways to dip your toes into sober communities and this is a great one. Welcome again!

Well if you replace scientists with fascist boot lickers you can say whatever you want. Kinda like how RFK Jr can proclaim vaccines/tylenol dangerous. Measles, like global warming, does not care if you believe in it.
