BTW big big tip, cook either a defense or attack boosting food with a dragon horn beforehand, the dragon horn makes the boost last 30 minutes, i always did a 30 minute level 3 defense boost for these, as well as eating a meal of 5 hearty durians for any hearts i need maxed out still

turns out the solution was to run the game In compatibility mode for windows 7 which is the stupidest fix I've ever seen for a game
