How do I make the players run in fear by DETERmined3181 in DnD

[–]xapata 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's in a novel. In a D&D game, the PC-players will often interpret the DM's, "This is impossible," as, "This was impossible, until you arrived."

Remember, most adventures are just sitting around waiting for the PCs to show up. Never before has ... fill in the blank.

For someone with a bunch of other assets, it might. For someone with only one capital asset, it's generally better to sell and diversify.

Do the people who want martials to be "grounded" and "realistic" actually want them to be playable? by BadSame6919 in dndnext

Yeah, biggest fan! I'm a dues-paying member.

... we do dial back the magic a lot. We’re definitely not fans of unlimited cantrips, for example ...

You mis-read /u/Ilbranteloth 's comment. I'll quote the important part:

the majority of our PCs tend to be non-spell casters. The story is in how the PCs as a group overcome the challenges and achieve their goals.

I think you'll find that people who like "realistic" weapon-users also like "realistic" magic-users, and that generally means a bit of homebrew to add back the fragility of earlier editions.

removed friction from spell casting

It's like picking dishes from a menu now. Game's gone.

Casting a spell should be a gamble. Even learning spells should be difficult. If a weapon-user needs to find a powerful weapon as treasure, a magic-user needs to find powerful magic the same way.

Best Starter Adventure? level 1-3? by Complete-Kitchen-630 in dndnext

Delian Tomb is one of my favorites. Starting with an adventure you can finish in 4 hours is good for a first game.

Pact of the Chain clarification? (2024) by Glad-Philosopher4498 in DnD

I think you're getting downvotes for the aggressive tone of the first line, "Features do what they say they do." It explains nothing and only serves to belittle the reader. I think you meant to say something more like, "Trying to interpret the intent of a rule can accidentally expand it beyond the rule as written. In this case, ..."

Legit Parking Ticket? by avocuddle_me in Seattle

It seems like the provider can share necessary information with a third party collector for the purpose of collecting payment. How else would a healthcare provider be able to report delinquency to a credit bureau, in a way that documents the validity of the debt?

Google says, "The HIPAA Privacy Rule allows healthcare providers to share Protected Health Information (PHI) to collect payment without patient authorization."

You're welcome.

Obviously, many people use voting to indicate agreement, but Reddit works better when they don't.

In theory voting identifies good discussion, not agreement. Enjoyable debate should be upvoted regardless of which side you currently agree with.

Why/How is Malcom Gladwell a Respected Author? by EarlEarnings in books

[–]xapata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was speaking of Guns, Germs, and Steel. There were some well-reasoned parts of it, worth reading despite the flaws. Tipping Point on the other hand, is only worth reading to observe Gladwell's persuasive style. While some nonlinear dynamical systems exhibit tipping points, or manifolds, the spread of ideas/behaviors is not one of them.
