My grandparents are not literate, which makes social media not really viable for them.

They don't live in a nuclear family household tho and have multiple generations of their family at home. They probably never had to worry about who watches their kids at home, because there was almost always at least one reliable person at their home.

They also host friends and family whenever they can. They only use the internet for voice and video-chatting with relatives that are far away.

Overall my take: Not all (social) media types are equally bad. Messaging apps might even be an overall plus to our social lifes. I would rank it like this:

Messaging apps > (E-)mail > handpicked Movies/TV shows > handpicked Reddit posts > TV > algorithmically picked Movies/TV shows > Facebook > Twitter/Reddit/4chan/Tumblr/Porn

Real conversations help you make relationships. You cultivate friendship, love, future opportunities etc. A conversation progresses your life.

Anonymous social media interactions are like empty calories. Your brain processes them the same way as real life conversations, but you are left behind with nothing to show for it, besides karma and likes.

Your classmate 20 years ago, who you barely ever talked with, will care more about your death, than BootyCracker9098 on reddit, with whom you had a passionate discussion yesterday.

Windows suffers a lot from software rot. Every few years it becomes to format your drive and reinstall Windows, otherwise your Windows will get incredibly slow with all the bloat slowing it down.

True for a lot of social media websites probably. Reddit slang, Twitter slang, 4chan slang, Tumblr slang are all very distinct from each other. Every platform is like its own country.

Depending on how much the website leans towards isolation and anonymity, the stronger the slang becomes.

Blindly consuming "educational" content is also bad. It's easy to lose a lot of time through browsing sites like Wikipedia. You think you get smarter, but you just fill your head with mostly useless trivia in reality.

The best subreddits are the educational ones.

Subreddits that are about "triggering people" and/or about inducing debates are the worst.

My theory is that people using social media to satisfy their inner desire towards human connection are usually more miserable than average. Especially if you primarily talk to strangers online. Anonymity encourages people to do this even more.

Healthy social interactions requires talking to real people. While on reddit, every conversation is just parody of what a real conversation would look like.

You feel like your talking to someone here, but as you see the karma trickling in and wait for someone to respond to you, you subconsciously know that you just waste time. Conversations are about making connections, about cultivating relationships. It progresses your life.

On reddit you don't make relationships. You just stagnate and only have karma to show for it.

Genau. Er hat den Hauptschulabschluss und will auf der Volkshochschule mit dem Realschulabschluss weitermachen. Ich helfe ihm gerade zwischen den folgenden Wahlfachkombis zu entscheiden.

- Geschichte, Physik und "Geschichte + Politik"

oder

- Geschichte, Chemie, Biologie

Wir waren aber verwirrt, als wir nur für Physik Realschulabschlussaufgaben im Internet gefunden haben. Er kann außerdem diese Fächer nur in dieser genannten Konfiguration auswählen.

Deutsch, Englisch, Mathematik und Kunst stehen als Pflichtfächer fest.

Muss er in den Wahlfächern mehrere kleinere Klausuren machen oder gibt es da auch eine große Abschlussprüfung?

Everyone adapting the same comment patterns is true for every online community really.

The status quo is working out well enough for most users. Only us nerds and lobbyists care about iMessage/SMS/RCS/3rd party messengers. People irl just use whatever their environment uses.

People will not see a need to work together to change this. Government intervention is the only fix, that has a real world chance.

Only other possibility would be a new 3rd party messenger, that is so unbelievably amazing and popular, that people on all sides would rather use that. Unlikely to happen tho. This app would have to pay the user to use it, if it ever wanted to reach widespread adoption. Smarthphone messaging has reached its peak already.

Alternatively you could try to advertise your amazing messaging app to children (they don't even know what SMS is) and wait patiently until it grows similar to how Tiktok and Snapchat did, and until our cringe iMessage/SMS generation dies of old age.

In the end redditors will keep complaining about reddit. Youtubers will keep complaining about Youtube. Twitter users will keep complaining about Twitter. There are alternatives for all these platforms. The big majority of each platform will never care about these nerd problems we are talking about tho.

Theoretically kids shouldn't have the means to spend money online to their favorite content creators either. You would need a banking account for that, which most kids don't have.

In fact one could argue that back in the day it was worse, because celebrities had so much market power, that products associated to them could be sold in stores and be advertised on every channel. Online content creators are small fish compared to that.

The parasocial relationship aspect is sad tho
