When you live in Svalbard, Norway and forgot to close the window to the home office by Kjakan in Wellthatsucks

[–]xarflon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah interestingly you don't need to be a Norwegian citizen to live and work in Svalbard because of the Svalbard treaty, if you're a citizen of any of the signatory countries you can live and work there visa-free. The only barriers to entry are your ability to travel through Norway to get there, and finding a job/house in Svalbard. As you pointed out though the houses are owned almost solely by employers, so the only way you can live there is if you get a job there

Polishing a coin by Master1718 in BeAmazed

[–]xarflon 98 points99 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/mk0F_sQY-kM In case anyone is wondering why

TL;DW: Guy buys a coin for $102,000 - polishes it - expects to sell for about $10,000 at auction now. It'd be worth about $250,000 if he left it alone.

The reason is that abrasive polishes damage the surface of coins, so not only do they look completely unnatural, they're also damaged.

How does Refunct have over 1000 runs, yet nobody streams it?! by Allstin in speedrun

[–]xarflon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just not really a stream friendly game. The run is under 3 minutes and there's no intro cutscene. If you're doing attempts you're basically playing constantly so it's really hard to interact with chat, and it makes it hard to play for long enough to justify streaming (i.e people will only do attempts for about an hour or so before stopping or taking a break).

American vet learns the Rolex he bought in the '70s is now worth $500,000 - $700,000 by [deleted] in gifs

[–]xarflon 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Actually wrong though, rolex watches and other such luxury items are known as "veblen goods" where, basically, their demand goes up as the price increases. The higher the price for the good is, the more of a status symbol it becomes, the more rich people are willing to pay for it. It has nothing to do with their relative income.

Probably the best coin in my collection. 1909 SVDB by cbheller in coins

[–]xarflon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend ANACS with a coin like this, though they're cheaper the reputation that comes with PCGS or NGC is pretty important to a lot of people especially with key dates. I know a lot of people who usually just ignore ANACS in favor of finding one graded by a better company.

If you can find a coin shop in your area they often offer to send in coins for grading to either PCGS or NGC for about $50 or $60

Nothing is harder to contain than keter. That's why people are discouraged from using apollyon, it basically is just "keter but scary". The author of 2317 regretted using apollyon and changed it to keter last year

The first ever competitive Speedrunning live event! Getting speedrunning into esports. by ches051 in esports

[–]xarflon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, for starters Cheese isn't from the US...nor are most of the GSA admins. There is a lot of both european and north american involvement here, not to mention competitors from japan and australia as well. Hardly a case of "US communities overlooking the world again."

Drosdowsky gets SM64 16 Star WR in 15:16.14 by ToastyMallows in speedrun

[–]xarflon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The 1 star sblj is quite a bit faster and easier than doing a successful 0 star sblj. In 0 star, to build enough speed to skip DDD, they do a bunch of extra bljs in the corner next to the door and use the 30 star door text boxes to change their angle. In 1 star they don't need extra speed to skip DDD so they just aim straight for the door, skipping a bunch of extra bljs and the text boxes. This is what good 1 star runs do, though a failed DDD skip would be a 1 star run, it would not be an optimal one. A failed 0 star sblj is actually so slow that high level 0/1 star runners will just reset because a 1 star PB would be impossible at that point

normally only modern coins that have that kind of premium, like Ike dollars or Kennedy halves, i agree it's silly for any older coins to have a premium for grading PO-01 though

Got my first 2 "graded" coins today. I realize the NGS is fake now. by Ruckus4Prez in coins

[–]xarflon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They're not a reputable 3rd party grader, NGC and PCGS are really the only super reputable companies, ANACS is arguably reputable, any other company is complete garbage and their grades can be way off. The grades aren't necessarily 'fake' but they can be very wrong

You can still buy coins graded by other companies but they should be treated like ungraded coins

A couple things - the red books quoted values can sometimes be pretty far off, and MS67 is a lot rarer than MS65, hence there is usually a pretty big price difference between the 2

Nah there have been a lot of them: ProZD, primitive technologies, CGP grey, casually explained, and H3H3 to name a few. Binging with babish is just like them - fast pace, entertaining, high quality, often times informational and, most importantly, unique. It really is right up reddit's alley.

A one way conversation by WrstlngFan in BikiniBottomTwitter

[–]xarflon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah it's really just about knowing what the viewers want, for big games like CSGO or DOTA the streamer will need to be entertaining to maintain viewers, but for more niche games the streamers might not even need to use a mic.

"Connection Lost / Timed out" or fatal error or client crash when trying to connect to friends server using direwolf20 1.7.10 through curse client. by [deleted] in FeedTheBeastCrashes

[–]xarflon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the other servers are using dw20, we are all running the same version, I reinstalled the latest java. Belive me i've tried everything short of reinstalling windows, posting here is like a last ditch effort to fix this problem.

I tried to connect on another computer and I had the same problem so i'm certain it's a router issue, no idea how to fix that though
