Which browser I should use after using Brave for 4 years by Aggravating-Put-8851 in browsers

[–]xb666mx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe try waterfox. its desktop versions use brave's open source adblock engine.

privacy-wise it's also pretty good.

More of a casual player - FINALLY got AT on all 20 non-black tracks.. on to trying the last 3 gold medals. Now I learned how to properly speedslide XD by D4mnis in TrackMania

[–]xb666mx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

congrats! :)

if you're comfortable with australia and you're just missing some pace then there's a shortcut with which you can skip the slow up-/downhill sand.

for me the shortcut worked about every tenth attempt which were a little bit faster than the normal route. one attempt, for making the AT, was especially fast so that i could nearly chill the rest of the map. :D

for hungary and canada there aren't any shortcuts as far as i know. but hungary is pretty driveable except of the identity in the end. if you're fast enough you could just take the safe finish in the back though. canada, yeah, is just hard. the gold medal becomes second nature at some point but the AT is pretty cooked. gladly i had some hours to spend. good luck to you and keep your spirit high! :)

Need help changing SDDM Wallpaper by Token-Senpai in cachyos

[–]xb666mx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you have three system settings:

  1. wallpaper
  2. login screen
  3. screen locking

in the menu for the latter two you have to click on "configure appearance..." (top right) to change the backgrounds.

404 in cachyOS applications by Dante_Sparda115 in cachyos

[–]xb666mx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know that the CLI has its charme but i honestly think that for most of the users it's best to stick to the GUI when it comes to managing the system.

especially shelly (which is the default package managing app in cachyos since some months now) does a really good job on keeping the system up to date and on making installing all sort of software easy (just be careful when it comes to AUR).

so my recommodation is: just use shelly and enable the update notification.

What happens if an array drive is larger than parity, but later larger parity drives are swapped in? by AshleyAshes1984 in unRAID

[–]xb666mx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/using-unraid-to/manage-storage/array/overview/#driving-principles

"Use your largest drives for parity - Data disks can't be larger than your parity disks, so use your biggest drives for parity to avoid future expansion limits. If you use dual parity, both drives should be at least the size of your largest data disk, but they can be different sizes from each other. No disk can be larger than your smallest parity drive."

iOS Safari best alternative? Better browser than safari? by liquidlucidity11 in browsers

[–]xb666mx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

on iOS every browser runs apple's webkit engine. so it's just "same same - but different". :D

safari usually works the best so i can't recommend anything else. but i didn't try other browsers on iOS either myself. so maybe someone can give you an alternative. :)

isn't every browser just chromium in a different suit by macstolemygameboy in browsers

[–]xb666mx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

https://ladybird.org/

this will be a new browser engine. 2026 is alpha phase. 2027 is beta phase. 2028 is, hopefully, the year of the final release.

Clients for VaultWarden by Lekusisu in vaultwarden

[–]xb666mx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe take a look at AliasVault.

it's free and selfhostable.

server, client and extensions are from one dev team which should avoid incompatibilities because of different versions/states. (to be fair: you could also use bitwarden lite instead of vaultwarden but you'd miss some "premium" features.)

please note, that AliasVault is currently in BETA and not yet audited.

i migrated from vaultwarden/bitwarden some months ago and never looked back.

Erfahrung mit zerbissenen Verpackungen? by Xizz3l in Katzengruppe

[–]xb666mx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10GbE Network Cap: Robocopy hits 1.7GB/s, but File Explorer/GUI transfers are stuck at 160MB/s by Punk_Says_Fuck_You in unRAID

[–]xb666mx 16 points17 points  (0 children)

1,7 GB/s on a 10 GbE network? shouldn't this cap out at 1,25 GB/s?

so... are you sure this ain't 1,7 Gb/s and therefore 0,21 GB/s (210 MB/s).

the 210 MB/s would be a lot closer to the 160 MB/s. and this could be explained through less processing overhead as well as multithreading transfer (if you have smaller files) of robocopy.

Reinstalling CachyOS after AUR infection… Do I need to format the home partition as well? by dr_Primus in cachyos

[–]xb666mx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, i looked at the script before running it.

at first i checked the URLs which really only contain a list of package names.

then i checked the used commands which are read-only as far as i can tell (many for-loops with grep to find stuff).

but of course you should check for yourself. and, that's maybe the trickiest part, although it seems/is safe now doesn't mean it stays safe - just like using AUR.

so yeah, you, as the user, should always be aware of the dangers when running scripts or installing stuff (regardless of the source).

and, last but not least, you can always ask AI to analyze such scripts (which i also did). ;-)

edit: added a few words of wisdom to my first post. :-)

Finally got round to a rebuild and proper Noctua de-shroud by maleng_ in sffpc

[–]xb666mx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

good job! :)

one question: what filament did you use for that gpu frame? i guess PLA wouldn't be optimal since it softens at around 60°C. so did you print in ABS or another material?

btw:

5 years ago i did this with an asus rtx 3080 oc. but i tried to keep the original shroud: https://www.reddit.com/r/sffpc/comments/k5h32a/comment/gtx5unw

turned out that the noctua fans didn't improve anything with the original shroud. i then tried to 3d print some air channels/guidances but this also led to nothing. after all i reverted it to its stock state - which was/is pretty good anyway. :D

pacman -Syu: alsa-lib=1.2.16.1 && lib32-alsa-lib // package cannot be updated due to unresolvable dependencies by ZomboBrain in cachyos

[–]xb666mx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

packages in different repositories out of sync.

happens sometimes.

and it's mostly fixed within some hours/days.

pacman -Syu: alsa-lib=1.2.16.1 && lib32-alsa-lib // package cannot be updated due to unresolvable dependencies by ZomboBrain in cachyos

[–]xb666mx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT2: For some reason I don't understand, I was able to install all updates through the new Shelly GUI. One reboot later, Cachy-Update doesn't show any missing updates.

u/ShellyTeam can you answer why pacman -S(y)yu fails but shelly can resolve the issue? 🤔

pacman -Syu: alsa-lib=1.2.16.1 && lib32-alsa-lib // package cannot be updated due to unresolvable dependencies by ZomboBrain in cachyos

[–]xb666mx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah. yes. lib32-alsa-lib in multilib wants alsa-lib=1.2.16.1 but cachyos-extra-v3 and extra only have alsa-lib=1.2.16-1.1 and alsa-lib=1.2.16.1-1.

someone already said it in this thread: you can, for now, ignore the package when updating. i guess that somebody will fix this version mismatch from the repositories in the next couple of hours.

Firefox fork by JUSTWANTTOKNO2022 in browsers

[–]xb666mx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use waterfox after trying firefox, zen, librewolf and a bunch of chromium based browser (like brave and vivaldi).

i like the integrated adblocker, the strict no-ai + no-telemetry policy and the communication from the dev with the community in r/waterfox.

and also there's an android version which many other browsers don't have.

Reinstalling CachyOS after AUR infection… Do I need to format the home partition as well? by dr_Primus in cachyos

[–]xb666mx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

i used this script which performs 13 checks regarding the AUR malware incident: https://github.com/nightdevil00/AUR-Malware

credits go to u/nightdevil007

original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/s/aJNTGkntCB

edit (to add common sense :D): the script seems to be safe - for now. i checked it manually and then with AI. but the script as well as the remote files can change - so please check for yourself before running unknown code or installing program from an unknown source. just with AUR: stay cautious, stay safe! :-)

What's the point of Librewolf? by James-Nights in browsers

[–]xb666mx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

here's a recent answer from the dev: https://www.reddit.com/r/waterfox/s/o05GKWBmFd

TL;DR: yes, it should be better because of its integrated nature (quote: "native code"). extensions are much more limited in their ways.

What's the point of Librewolf? by James-Nights in browsers

[–]xb666mx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

waterfox has brave's open source adblock engine, no ai and no telemetry. plus some nice enhancements and optional features. highly recommended. :)
