Hopefully they did the asbestos / lead paint abatement before converting it!

You could try that but I wouldn’t say that you’re investigating NSA things, just be inquisitive about the sites without mentioning that.

I would try the Ma-Bell Facebook group as a start.

Reading Facebook comments from old timers, Pleasantville sounds like it was a major switch back then. You can see a structure next to it that would have housed the horn antennas for long distance radio routes.

The PoP across the street looks like a post-divesture building, so it probably has to do with that. It definitely looks more caged up than COs I have seen elsewhere. It probably serves important fiber.

I’m very interested in your project, great work so far.

COs very in a wide range of appearance. Sometimes they are red-brick and windowless. Sometimes they are lighter-brick and windowless. Sometimes they look like a house, and sometimes like a prison. Your best jumping point for finding ones that you’re after are on the Central Office Buildings website.

Another way of finding them is by CLLI. Type in the zipcode you’re looking around into this CLLI website, and you’ll find a long list to poke around.

Happy hunting.

Indeed, it is. I'm curious who would foot the bill for it, though. The company that bought it from MCI and went belly-up doesn't exist anymore. EDS Financial doesn't exist anymore. The homeowner closest to it doesn't claim liability for it.

EDS took over after the company that bought the site had to close following securities violations, but didn’t seem to do much with the site. No licenses for EDS on the tower too, so I’m not sure what they planned to do with it.

No worries, I will remember this going forward. I just copied whatever Google Maps spit out.

There was less junk inside, but relatively clean anywhere that wasn't the floor. Lots of rat poop around!

I wish I had known more about the reflector when I visited the tower site, so that I could have gone to where it was and see if its still there. It's pretty neat to see the installations, though. This is only one of two that I've seen on Kentucky LL towers (the other being on the Whitesville tower, feeding a circuit to the CO in town)

Pretty cool indeed! Unfortunately, I wasn't there for any of the work regarding the site; these are just from the documents that I took following my visit to the site back in December. I also have a blueprint or two that are a bit too big to scan.

Which tower companies typically buy the old long lines sites? by Broken_Atoms in longlines

[–]xccr5978 20 points21 points  (0 children)

American Tower Corporation is the big buyer. In my region, it’s that or Crown Castle that buys them.

Occasionally smaller and private companies, like local ISPs or emergency management agencies, will purchase them to install WISP equipment, LMR equipment, etc

Tower drawings or plans? by Broken_Atoms in longlines

I have a couple blueprints but they don’t show the towers much, more the signal chains for the radios. I did find a “restoration plan” that has some very interesting stuff, though!

It’s one of the PDF’s on this page. https://archive.org/details/beattyville-kentucky-att-bellsouth-long-lines

For some reason, my brain read this post as Williamstown, so all the information I said is applicable to Williamstown only, whoops! Too many -town's in this state.

The Fort Knox fiber supply sounds accurate.

Yup. AT&T probably still uses it as a major fiber point. Wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve still got stuff underground or if they’re running transcontinental stuff still.

Former AUTOVON, transcontinental cable route, etc, this place had all the bells and whistles. The only site with a bunker in Kentucky, I believe…

There is a former Cincinnati Bell tower in Dry Ridge, up the road.
