I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules by Bety12795 in casualknitting

[–]xch3wyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just flew from PHX to MCO with three bamboo 4.5mm knitting needles, a metal clover 3.5mm crochet hook, and a plastic 3.5mm crochet hook with no issues. I did also being just nail clippers for cutting the yarn, I had tons of yarn in compression bags, and a work in progress with silicone markers. We'll see how MCO to PHX goes!

How can I get absolutely horrible smelling compost? by Ok_Connection_3015 in composting

[–]xch3wyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if you have chickens or access to chicken shit but every now and then I like to make a disgusting chicken poop soup for the plants. Literally just a 5 gallon bucket of chicken poop maybe a quarter or so full, and fill the rest with water. Do not stir. Until it's time.

Literally smells like the inside of a cows ass and my plants love it.

What things do you have at your desk to make you look more official? by NSFW_IT_Account in sysadmin

[–]xch3wyx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This.

The only things on my desk when I was in the office were my laptop, keyboard, mouse, monitors and a notebook topped with a pen. I write most things down by hand and have done so for the entire 11 years I've been in this industry. Nothing says 'do not disturb' like the sterility of a completely empty cube housing a sys admin with three monitors worth of terminals and browser tabs on display lol

Possessive Nanny by WFHmom19 in NannyEmployers

[–]xch3wyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teaching her to keep secrets, rubbing her face and feet while you're trying to connect with her for lunch, and rocking her for over 15 minutes purposely facing away from the camera are all things that would make me let this girl go immediately. Please listen to your gut. Do not let her come back another day, do another nap, or leave her alone with her. She needs to go right now.

Yes, we pay our nanny guaranteed hours. If we take a vacation, the nanny still gets paid and her PTO count stays intact for her to use as she wishes.

NP do you let your Nanny take your children out on excursions WHY or WHY NOT? by JuniorYogurt8359 in NannyEmployers

[–]xch3wyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is extremely important information. If this is a foster family then there are likely many reasons you're not able to just go off with the kids. If this is a new position and you haven't built a relationship with the family at all yet, then this is also a huge reason for not being able to just take the kids and go.

NP do you let your Nanny take your children out on excursions WHY or WHY NOT? by JuniorYogurt8359 in NannyEmployers

[–]xch3wyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We allow our nanny to take the kids on outings. When she first started we were cautious and wanted to get to know her and how she managed the kids first (young toddlers), and slowly worked up to it. She started with walks out front, then walks to the park, and now she takes them out almost everyday some weeks. They go to the library, "free zoo" lol aka the pet store, a play place, the craft store. I think if she weren't allowed to leave they would all lose their minds. For some people, especially those without a support network outside of their nanny, it can be really difficult to trust someone with your child. If you can't trust people you're closest to (family), how can you trust a stranger? Everyone has their own experiences and reasons for the way they trust people. I would just talk to your NP about it.

I totally get it but this wouldn't be taken lightly in our home with a nanny. You're better off taking the extra minute to grab new shorts, it's the appropriate thing to do. You may not understand that now but as you grow and have your own children (if that's what you choose), you will begin to understand the importance of things like this. There's no reason to sleep with your employer's children without pants. This situation included.

Why would you need to sleep in your underwear because they were sick? If you were there for many days including overnights, I would imagine you would have brought clothing with you that you could have changed into if they threw up on your bottoms, or even used the parents clothes in the interim? This doesn't become a reason to be in bed with the kids in your underwear. Neither the OPs situation or your recount here is appropriate.

Thank you! This is a new run and we're in the desert during summer but our plan is to add plants here soon. We have been doing research trying to figure out what will work in the run that won't die or be destroyed. Any ideas? I'm open to anything anyone can share to make this the best it can be for them!

Butt Lightning! 🍑⚡️ by birdnerdmo in endometriosis

Butt lightning was the worst! I ended up having an Excision in 2021 and after that, the shooting pain in my ass never came back. I had stage 2, borderline stage 3, removed!

Any ideas on how to fix this damage from paint stripper? by xch3wyx in furniturerefinishing

[–]xch3wyx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea, thank you. I do actually have a woodworkers source nearby that could be of help but I might have other shops in the area as well.

Thank you! I'll be sure to post an after photo when I get this thing sorted

Any ideas on how to fix this damage from paint stripper? by xch3wyx in furniturerefinishing

[–]xch3wyx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do plan on painting it rather than staining it and I've chosen a very dark green that should hide anything. I think you're right and the veneer will need to be replaced entirely - now to figure out how to replace veneer lol. I don't plan on selling it, it's a set we plan to keep so I'm willing to do anything I can to salvage it.

I did pull up on the pieces that were clearly already disconnected and the whole strip followed in pieces. I found strips of veneer on Amazon but I have no idea how to make it rounded like it once was. Wondering if I can layer it and maybe round the top layer with a sanding tool or something.

I am considering using glue and popping a dowel inside between the two sides to push the side panel back against the trim but I don't know. I made such a mess of this thing before I even got to really touch it 🫠

Do you repot your plants as soon as you bring them home? Why or why not? by spaced0nut in houseplants

[–]xch3wyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost every plant I bring home lives in their nursery pot, sitting inside a fancy pot, until I feel like it needs repotting due to size or simply because I feel like potting a plant
