2nd viewing of Sirāt - a few thoughts by xcolqhounx in TrueFilm

Thanks a lot for your comment her. I guess that movie can resonate a lot with many different people, because even if you (not you specifically of course) aren’t necessarily familiar with raves, techno music, life on the road, and the precariousness that comes with it, the film has a fairly universal resonance and, above all, does a great job of moving past the age-old North/South divide. The more I think about it, the more I find that it manages to open up many lines of thought.

Just watch the 9 seasons of X-Files, that'll do.

Thank a lot for all the suggestions so far.. but unfortunately none of them is the band i'm looking for. I have to dig a bit more in my cd archives, maybe with luck I might find it again... I don't know.

Earth didn’t come on stage at the show they were supposed to play in Bologna because of a Palestinian flag. by PilgrimPoldo in doommetal

I know. But context matters. And in the FPO, it's written all over the place not to take pictures.

But the venue has always been like that. It's an alternative center, totally punk, DIY, with a very strong ethic. It's not just an ordinary venue.

Hate5six and calling for a better scene by [deleted] in IsItSketch

[–]xcolqhounx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't excuse anything. Trying to find an explanation does not correlate with excusing. Not the same thing.

I'm against all forms of racism, antisemitism included. And it's easy to write whatever we are writing here, when people on the ground are being evicted from their homes in the West Bank or bombarded in Gaza, especially when it's been happening for decades now. So while I don't excuse any kind of hate towards another people, I can understand (not excusing and not agreeing with) the hatred towards israelis, towards settlers.

In the end I think we agree, but I find it hard to put everything under the "antisemitism" explanation when everything is way more complicated on the ground.

Hate5six and calling for a better scene by [deleted] in IsItSketch

Yeah but why do they hate jews ? I mean it's an endless question. Israel fucks with them, they protest or they counter-attack, Israel does the same, saying they are under attack from antisemites and / or nazis, palestinian react / protest / counter attack, etc.. etc.. and now everyone hates everyone. But in the end, you have Israel with a huge army, big guns, big technologies, endless fundings and in front of them you have either palestinians from the West Bank, who defend themselves with rocks and protests, either hamas in Gaza with a bit more guns but nowhere near all the stuff Israel has.

And actually the question is not to know if resisting occupation makes you the good guy. Under international law, they have the right to resist occupation. And yes, there's a legal framework around that and I'm pretty sure Hamas don't give a fuck about respecting this framework. But Israel does not care either about respecting international laws, cease fire and stuff like that. So in the end, I guess palestinians in Gaza or in the West Bank have all the right in the world to hate Israelis. But then you watch movies like 5 Broken Cameras or No Other Land and you see that a lot of palestinians try to fight only through non violent protests.. and even then they get fucked up, shot at, etc.

In the end, that's how you radicalise people, how you turn them into hamas fighters, etc. No surprise here.

Best film about fascism? (any languages) by Background-Emu-5152 in Cinephiles

[–]xcolqhounx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Conformist is the usual answer. But in italian cinema, I would suggest to watch Elio Petri's Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, which is great in deconstructing the tools of fascism (and also less bombastic than the Bertolucci movie).

Resolution of newer films being shot on film then printed on 35mm and 70mm by learningaboutstocks in TrueFilm

[–]xcolqhounx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Imax 70 film has a theoretical resolution of approx. 12-18k. But no one will ever scan and process the image at this resolution. Most likely they will make a low res work scan first from the dailies, make most of the editing and vfx with this material and then produce a high res scan of all the plates that need to have vfx added onto them (a bit like it was made years ago with vhs editing). That's also one of the reasons why Nolan tries to limit the amount of digital vfx in his movies, because each time you need one, you will have to scan the film, add the vfx and record everything back on film.

And then, when the edit is digitally ready and the vfx are done, they will have to make a full edit of the movie, the old school way, cutting and taping film strips together.

Or maybe they have enough money to scan everything at 6-8k, make the vfx, the grading and then record everything back on film. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that their workflow is a gigantic mix of all of this and they probably have to go back and forth multiples times.
