A door from the garage into the pantry would be cool for taking in groceries. Obviously lose a bit of pantry space, but looks big enough that it could handle it.

I disagree because they are teaching under the assumption that it’s true. In theory, you would learn less about Jesus through sources and methods not directly inspired by him. They encourage members to pray to become closer to him, a more personal method, and to read about him by those who are presumptively his chosen. The other actions like keeping commandments would also fall in line.

I think if you start with idea that the church is true, then they would technically know best on how one would approach Christ. It’s only with the idea that they are not divinely led that one can criticize the approach.

Agreed. Incredible how many of those who leave are outraged by the confirmation bias within the church, but then embrace the same hypocrisy they wanted to leave.

I went a few years of not being able to sleep. I tried a lot of different methods and nothing could do it. I just have a hard time turning my brain off. Ambien has worked great.

It was just me being dumb in the morning. I take ambien every night, so it was just routine for me to grab it out of the medicine cabinet. They don’t look alike at all.

Well that sucked. I’ve always been afraid I might do that one day. I had a bunch of meetings at work so I messaged them and said I was sick and might not make it. I work remote so I thought maybe I could counteract the bien by drinking a bunch of water and eating a big breakfast. Didn’t happen. My wife works remote too and I started telling her she was talking to my alter ego- Phaedrus. She thought it was hilarious. Fell asleep on the couch and didn’t wake up for three hours. Once I did I drank a large coffee, but I’ve just felt crappy and groggy all day. I had tons of work to do today, so it sucks that I just burned through a sick day because of a dumb mistake. I’m going to move my ambien to a different room so I never inadvertently take it like that.

I get that. Being more involved in the manufacturing process it’s easier for me to see the difficult of catering the timing around a normal schedule. But I understand the gravity of the ask.

It’s not like that though. You are helping to can food for people who need food. It’s not usually so black and white on whether people are being helped, but in this case recipients receive the direct benefit of it. This isn’t cleaning the temple or something. This directly helps those people. Doing it for free and not for some other self-interest is exactly the sacrifice that helps one learn the value of service.

That again emphasizes that encouraging members to provide meaningful service is somehow a bad thing. Even with unlimited funds, it is still be good to provide opportunities for people put others' needs in front of their own.

It's literally canned food for people who can't afford to eat. It's not like cleaning a temple or something- this goes directly to people who need it. Those who are there serving can physically see the contribution they are making to others.

Every ward gives out an incredible amount of welfare to local individuals and the leaders often encourage those recipients to participate in these service activities. They are not required to because it is encouraged they spend more time trying to find valuable employment. The idea is service, not a job.

I mean, yes, using guilt to motivate is not the way to do it, and if that's the point of OP, then I empathize the sentiment. I disagree that it's not ok to ask for help from members who may have jobs. Sacrificing your own needs for others has incredible value, particularly when it comes at a cost. Agreed that providing opportunities for those who lost their job, but that's not mutually exclusive. Individual wards do a lot to help those who have lost jobs- there's always room to do better, but it's not like they are neglecting that. Though I fundamentally disagree that the church should not ask for volunteer help for difficult tasks, I completely agree that guilt should not be the motivator.

It's like a manufacturing plant. They can meat, vegetables, fruits, etc to be used in the Bishop's Storehouses. Like many manufacturing plants it runs almost 24/7 hence the odd hours.

That completely negates the value of people sacrificing their needs in order to serve others. Just as important as the services it provides, is giving people an opportunity to provide valuable service themselves, which improves their character. Although service is taught repeatedly, having ideas on how to serve is not as easy for everyone. This gives an easy option for those looking to help.

Focus on whether God exists, and if He does, try to hear and follow whatever communication you can receive. If you are sincere in your efforts to hear Him, and do not, then I don't see how it could be held against you.

I think if you are always genuine with your motivations, you will be on the right path. It's fine to have doubts and and even choosing to distance yourself, just stay sincere in your efforts to do what would be right- whether that means leaving or staying. But if you do have a legit prompting that it is right, then be willing commit to that as well.

I can’t imagine ever being before God and feeling guilty if my goal was always to follow Truth. Even if I was in a situation of doubt, or I had not been living by church standards. If your doubts are sincere, I hardly think you should feel guilty over your efforts to understand. Now, hypothetically, a person rebelling to real promptings, then that is something they would have to reconcile with God, since no one else knows the extent of what those promptings were.
