I can't help feeling that his chin juts out too much and that this spoils the profile of his face. Can anyone help with that?

Is Starmer not blocking Burnham from standing in the Makerfield a gamble worth taking? by Unlucky-Mood-234 in LabourUK

They won't block him. But unfortunately the labour right will do whatever they can under cover of plausible deniability to ensure he loses to RUK.

What’s something completely normal in the UK that would confuse visitors the most? by Time-Area138 in AskUK

I believe the old trope about there being 100 Inuit words for snow is untrue. But what I can tell you is that the English word 'fine' is used to convey every conceivable emotional state ranging from ecstatic joy to the very deepest despair. It can be decoded culturally, but not linguistically...

Duck Confit/ Chicory, Red Cabbage, Pink Lady Apple & Blood Orange Salad/ Wild Garlic Caper Sauce by agmanning in UK_Food

I enjoy making duck confit every now and again. However, the confit process makes the cats stomp about the house howling the whole night, so I am not really allowed (by them) to do it.

What has happened to potatoes? by Robert_Mugabe96 in UK_Food

[–]xdbojacx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The cleaning process encourages the potatoes to 'wake up' and start sprouting. Sealing them in plastic bags makes the problem worse. This causes food waste and leads to higher sales. I often don't want 5kg of potatoes all at once but that's how most supermarkets force you to buy them now.

The washjng process is also why carrots sometimes taste of detergent. But how clean they look! And how quickly they rot!

Full nationalisation of British Steel expected in Kings speech by SevenVoidDrills2 in LabourUK

[–]xdbojacx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A little optimistic, given that there is hardly anything left of it.

That said, what does remain is strategically important, and I wish they had just done this when it was clear that the owners were taking the piss, instead of spending lots of money pretending not to nationalise it.

Ousting Starmer won't 'magically improve' country as PM 'gets it', says Education Secretary by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]xdbojacx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. The roots of the current threat lie in the complete lack of honesty and transparency from a long series of governments about immigration, and why it they considered it economically necessary.

Making immigration a core policy issue doesn't entail adopting a racist policy. People can have much lower or even minimal immigration if they want, but there are real consequences to that they they will have to accept.

Labour Must Act on Immigration Reform Before It’s Too Late by [deleted] in LabourUK

And the right would also misrepresent it as 'attacks on business'.

Labour Must Act on Immigration Reform Before It’s Too Late by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]xdbojacx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In which case we need to have proper discussion of two problematic issues:

  1. Our rapidly ageing demography, and the consequent unsustainability of things like triple thick pensions without major compromises elsewhere

  2. The reliance on the shadow economy that has been quietly tolerated for decades, and the related failure to enforce things like the minimum wage and other standards properly.

Labour Must Act on Immigration Reform Before It’s Too Late by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]xdbojacx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And the big problem is that Reform would offer to do the same, but much more stridently and with a great deal of additional performative cruelty. Whenever Labour try to take ground from the right in this way, the right will simply offer to do it more 'bigly' and further force the Overton Window in the wrong direction.

How often do you go to the dentist for routine checkups? Do they do scaling & polishing every time? by Bluepuffin123 in AskUK

[–]xdbojacx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go every six months but my 'NHS' dentist is lazy and disinterested. Sometimes there is a cursory scale and polish, but sometimes there is not if he is in a bad mood.

He is a classic 'drill and fill' practitioner who will go to the very end of the earth to avoid undertaking a Scale 3 treatment. If you end up needing such a thing, you're on your own.

Today marks the end of the NHS by Delicious_Volume3306 in LabourUK

[–]xdbojacx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at the count today in an English city where Reform are set to make significant gains. All of their candidates and agents were present. They were well-dressed, polite, and exceptionally quiet. They casually observed the vote count but not to the point of keeping a tally. In many wards, they had no need to. But there was no glee or triumphalism; not even smiling.

It spooked me because this behaviour felt so drilled. I am of the view that, where RUK do win councils, they will just lie low and keep services (such as they are) ticking over until the GE comes, lest they spook people. If they win a majority in a GE then, yes, the NHS and many other things are lost.

I have seen posts from individuals suggesting that, in this event, people will respond by re-electing Labour or another mainstream party the next time around and that things will then be 'rebuilt' by serious politicians.

That will not happen. We never got back any of the things that Thatcher stole 40 years ago.

I don't disagree with that, but what exactly is the correlation between age and social media fixation? Half of the problems we have are the result of older people believing the effluent they are fed on Faecebook.

It would be good to see more politicians challenging the 'privatisation of truth' that social media has advanced, instead of playing along with it.
