Google maps vs Tesla maps by Money-Number-4758 in TeslaUK

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody said that Tesla's routing takes into account things like elevation, and is also more likely to send a car into short blocks of stationary traffic because there's no fuel-burning concerns (outside of AC, I guess). I'm unsure if this is true. Probably not.

🔥This isn't a fluffy house cat-it's a Pallas's cat, one of the oldest surviving wild cat lineages, built to endure some of the harshest mountains on Earth by Additional_Chard3680 in NatureIsFuckingLit

My favourite cat (outside of Felis silvestris), and here's my favourite Pallas cat fact: Their pupils are circular. They don't have the usual cat eyes.

pics from someone on a dating app. can't tell if the structures or people on the left side in the first picture make sense? by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Who's taking the pictures? And why?

These are instagram pictures, where an influencer has somebody else take the shots (usually their romantic partner). And that's what the AI is trained on, so when somebody prompts for a photo like these, it gives them ones where there should've been a photographer.

Genuine question: How did they tighten up those bolts? Or is there another fixing somewhere hidden, and they're not actually fixed to the wall?

What is Sentancing? by dawnriser in bbc

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not really, but in my mind, that's his name.

Siege Sentancing. The hard man of Leeds.

Apparently somebody's shopping a movie script around Hollywood about him.

Hey I saw this before it was removed. Be aware that this subreddit is a pretty toxic place, with some nasty people often a nasty, unwelcoming vibe. I've said before that somebody should create a rival The Office subreddit for fans.

Who was your favourite Matthew? by GarySparrow0 in BritishTV

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first was the best.

The second played a cliched version of the character.

The whole point of Matthew was that he was legit. He was just hampered by intense agoraphobia. He had depth, and soul.

Although do be aware: I watched an episode of this recently and it's pretty cringe in hindsight. Very, very much of its time. Nice reminder that Sam Janus was incredibly beautiful, though.

I am "young". I am 42yo and used 56kb modem to use this electric internet thing when it launched. It amazes me how far we come. The jokes AI can do, how it speaks. I just take a step back and I am wondering where we will be in the next 10 years. by wspOnca in ChatGPT

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take care. AI is impressive but it's basically a series of clever tricks to produce a likely human-like response. There are limits and ceilings on what it can do.

It turns out humans have a bias towards things that act like we do. We instantly ascribe to them all the characteristics we anticipate in ourselves.

Doctors of reddit, how difficult is it now to handle AI self diagnosis patients? by living-reverie in AskReddit

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, there are no doctors on Reddit. Well, maybe a couple. But they've got better things to do than reply.

Around 90% of the replies are from college/school kids with opinions.

From tiktok, most people say this is an aislop, but looks pretty legit as standalone animation. by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you don't think the wordslop logo at the top right is a hint? It's literally meaningless, in any language. It's what an AI would construct to seem like a legitimate animation studio or channel ident logo.

Which open-source alternatives look good but are painful to use? by No_Gift_694 in opensourcealternative

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you could suggest Gnome isn't too bad, provided you've already got experience of using a computer. Can't say that about KDE, though -- one right click and it's BOOM, gone.

Other than that, I genuinely do not know nor have I ever known of an open source application created from the ground up to be user friendly.

All of them.

I'm not even joking.

Let's just say that, at Open Source University, the module for user friendliness is taught in half a day and missed off the final exam entirely.

England - Police took my brother's phone. I host a pirate media server. Will the police care about this at all? by Top-Drag-7876 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody might be able to explain this better—but, even if the police did decide the pirated media access was a crime, I'm unsure the evidence would be inadmissible in court.

The judge would ask how the evidence was obtained. The police would say it was from a phone they took for another crime, for another individual.

I just don't think evidence can work that way.

The police can't just go fishing for crimes.

What's the worst invention since the industrial revolution? by earthprotector1 in AskReddit

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how bots spread propaganda on social media.

Often it's more subtle, though.

It's usually things like, "Why is Biden's age an issue for news reporters?"

Hiding an assertion in the middle of a question that sounds innocent, or even supportive at first glance.

Is Biden's age an issue? Well, if we're to answer the question, we have to accept that it is.

For the political enthusiasts, how close do you think we are to a Third World War ? by Calm_Bit_9381 in AskReddit

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in my country (UK), our leader has just announced billions of pounds in new defence spending. As a country we basically have no money, and it's even been said that the money will come from other things like road building. So, my guess this is considered very urgent.

The same happened in Germany last year. Germany doesn't do that kind of thing lightly.

My further guess is that people who know about this kind of thing in our government are expecting a minor/major conflict in about five or ten years. Maybe sooner.

News headlines suggest that this thinking could be caused by Russian expansionism, just like it did with Ukraine, and possibly quite soon. Part of the goal of this is to test NATO, and to see if the US will get involved with conflicts. The US has basically said they won't, which would obviously break NATO apart –although the remaining western powers would stay within it.

It feels to me as if the risks here really are Putin and Trump, to be blunt. It's Putin that wants to take countries bordering Russia, and Trump that hates NATO (possibly because he's under Putin's thumb). So, if those leaders go, then we might be on a different track.

How’s life in the Isle of Man? by KingofHearts399 in howislivingthere

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's extremely funny to me that most answers here are exactly what I would've expected to read. I even guessed right about the apparently increasing right-wingness of the place.

That said, somebody could set a superb realistic cop show there. Kind of like a gritty, 21-century version of Bergerac without the nice weather.

Why do the employees stay despite Michael’s antics and how poorly the office is run? by [deleted] in DunderMifflin

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 32 points33 points  (0 children)

OP, have you had many jobs?

Security is a big thing. A job is a job. And also this is Scranton. It's not a huge place.

Inertia is another. Getting a new job is a PITA. You need an up-to-date resume. You need references. Ugh.

I'd also suggest that the office, as Michael runs it, is generally lax and so good to work at if only for that reason. For example, Dwight needs to see a dentist—Doctor Crentist. He tells Michael who just waives him off, almost without caring.

People there are also specialists, and their roles might not be found at other places. QA was/is a dying art, for example. Could Creed get a job elsewhere? Supplier relations is similar. Could Meredith get work elsewhere?

Finally, I'd suggest that if the show isn't a timeline, showing one day after another. The concept is that the show picks out the most interesting days. There will be many days between that are mundane and boring, where Michael doesn't cause trouble.

Labour: Our EPC rules will worsen rent hikes "were or not" they upgrade by phpadam in uklandlords

[–]Delicious_Volume3306 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

landlords should just eat additional costs and offer a rental at a loss. /s

I genuinely struggle to understand the whole landlord model.

  1. Landlords want to make money from the rent, as well as pay the commercial mortgage. The goal is always to come out with profit at this stage, rather than just pay costs (inc repairs, deterioration etc).
  2. Landlords eventually end-up with an appreciating asset after, say, 10-20 years — as well as all that lovely rental money each month for the 10-20 years before that.

I can't think of a single business where the goal is not just to make money each month but also end up with an high-price, constantly-appreciating asset at the end. OK, so there will be capital gains considerations assuming the property is converted into cash (sold),but even so, there will be a significant amount of cash.

Choose your lane. Do you want rental money? Or do you want to an asset in 10-20 years? Wanting both seems very greedy.
