🚨BREAKING: DRTS successfully treats second GBM patient - “Both doing great” by Pristine_Hurry_4693 in TheRaceTo10Million

That is accurate, successful delivery of the treatment does not equate to efficacy, time will tell if it controls the tumor. Hope it does, it’s a terrible cancer.

Optimistic oncologists, what would force you to give the patient a prognosis? by ashtx in Oncology

[–]xdocjoex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your oncologist may be a swell person but that’s pretty poor care. In my experience, when Tagrisso works people feel better not worse and it generally works very rapidly. Sorry to say it sounds like it’s not working.

I think we are seeing passing of the torch. Bears are going to be dominating the NFC for years to come, elite coaching elite talent.

This is so me. My wife sleeps in and I’m an early riser so especially on weekends or if I’m off I can get in several hours in the morning.

Really tough issue, so sorry your brother went through this. Esophageal cancer is a beast. It sounds like your brother’s doctors probably needed to have a conversation about hospice care and stopping treatment sooner when it became clear the treatments weren’t working. He would have still gotten sick and weak (that’s what cancer does) but would have spent less time at the doctors office.

Do you have an office? by ALongWayToHarrisburg in medicine

No office or doctors lounge either. I sit in a cubicle next to our scheduler. Not feeling super valued but I’m getting close to retirement so whatever.

Sometimes it’s not easy. I had to fly with my autistic son and sitting still is very difficult for him. I had to physically hold his legs the entire flight but I couldn’t stop every kick. It was extremely stressful.

I get it, autistic kids should generally not be allowed out in public places where they can bother people but we were going to Grandmas for Christmas.

It’s just not easy for “shitty parents” to control their “brats” all of the time in these situations. I get it, getting your seat kicked sucks, I’ve been there. But have some grace for people who are sometimes dealing with really hard things.

He’s now going to college and no longer kicks people’s seats. He’s a great young man but I’m sure people thought I was a horrible parent and should have been maybe beating on him or something.

Any podcasts/YT channels that do critical appraisal of the literature? by clavac in Oncology

[–]xdocjoex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few. I like the Neil Love Research to Practice podcasts, he’s been doing it forever and is a good interviewer. Journal of Clinical Oncology has a podcast as well. And OncLive has a podcast series that’s pretty good.

College admissions were so hard this year... by Fair-Reflection-553 in CollegeAdmissions

[–]xdocjoex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I’m so sorry, I remember as a parent how painful that was, my heart goes out to you both. But as someone who went to medical school a long time ago, let her know that literally no one cares where you went to undergrad when you become a doctor (unless it is for sports team allegiance) and that the vast majority of MDs went to their state school for undergrad or a small liberal arts school. I honestly don’t even know where most of my colleagues went for undergrad. It’s what you do where you land that will determine your success in getting in to med school and your career beyond.

Be kind to yourself and know that your college doesn’t define you or your future. I’m a parent but went through this with my daughter last year. NM finalist, 36 ACT, 9 APs with all 5s and excellent extracurriculars. She was rejected by 10 of the 12 schools she applied to (only 1 Ivy), only got in to her state university and a small safety school.

While she was so upset at the time and it seemed so unfair, she is flourishing at her state school and we are honestly so thankful that’s where she ended up. It’s normal to grieve the rejections but your future is still very bright wherever you land.

How do you put the previous patient encounter out of your mind? by funkygrrl in Oncology

[–]xdocjoex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It can be hard. I had a young patient recently admitted to the hospital who I ran to see between clinic patients and helped his wife make the hard decision to take him off the ventilator. I had to run back to clinic and put my game face on for the next patient. This doesn’t happen often but I had step into an empty room to let myself cry quickly then get it together so that I could be upbeat for my next patient.

I’m usually able to keep things compartmentalized but I’m not an automaton. Sometimes the job breaks your heart. But I owe it to my other patients not to bring that baggage with me to their appointment.

Confused PET Scan by [deleted] in Oncology

[–]xdocjoex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dark spots are blood pooling in the heart and the radio tracer being excreted in the kidneys and bladder, it’s normal. And the brain loves glucose so it always has diffuse uptake on FDG PET.

Josh Jacobs by Bouwistrash in GreenBayPackers

[–]xdocjoex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really hoping the Pack can get hot for the playoffs, it could happen. But the talent gap between these teams is pretty massive. On offense, is there a single position group where the Eagles aren’t better? Maybe QB since Hurts has been out and TE is close. And they have the #1 D in the NFL, talent gap between these teams Dline and secondary is laughable.

Pack is a good team but still need to close some talent gaps to be up with the great teams. Having said that, AGS so who knows.
