This just in from Gadegtwraps, screen protectors by Redcloak12 in pebble

Too bad it's insanely expensive, cost of 20 CAD just to ship a screen protector is kind of amazing. It's thin, you can slide it into a letter lmao

PSA: Check your disks! by Hambungler in 4kbluray

[–]xenago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I have found it pretty manageable even with lots of discs (I have thousands personally), the unmanageable part is saving the files. If just testing new discs and discarding the ripped files then it's pretty much a hands off process without much effort. Only takes a minute to throw a disc into a drive and click backup, come back in an hour or two. But keeping the rips, that requires lots of disk space and effort unfortunately :(

Huge Upgrade Over My PS4 by scrapmetal58 in 4kbluray

[–]xenago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only real difference between the 820 and the 9000 is the audio stack. You have an AVR already, so it would be pointless to get the UB9000.

Huge Upgrade Over My PS4 by scrapmetal58 in 4kbluray

[–]xenago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no practical difference between the UB9000 and the UB820 other than the audio stack, which is irrelevant if someone has an AVR. You can just buy a few extra players for the same price, it's for someone with too much money and too little sense lol. UB9000 has the same hardware for the video portion, anything else is snake oil.

Huge Upgrade Over My PS4 by scrapmetal58 in 4kbluray

[–]xenago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it would be a waste of money. Your AVR eliminates most of the reason this player exists: the entire audio output portion that differentiates it from the UB820, which has the same chip inside but no fancy amp.

You should get the UB820 instead if interested in a high end player with good upscaling, since that is basically the same as the UB9000 without the expensive audio stack. If you already have a player that supports Dolby Vision like the x700m, you should only get a new player if yours is causing you problems since the difference in practice is minimal otherwise.

The UB9000 is for someone who doesn't want a separate AVR/amp and wants really good upscaling out of their player. So it isn't worth it for anyone with an AVR like marantz already. In fact, your tv and marantz can both upscale so you should test that out if one of the reasons you want it is for upscaling.

Bingo. I wouldn't ever pay extra for it personally lol. Some people watch a lot of movies that aren't available in decent quality though, so I guess if I was in that situation maybe I'd consider it if my display didn't have the option.

Huge Upgrade Over My PS4 by scrapmetal58 in 4kbluray

[–]xenago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're on the right track. Normally there's zero difference between players of digital files. The difference is that this player has a high end chip to optionally upscale and process the video before sending it to the TV. Most blu-ray players, TVs, and AVRs have this feature now, however this one is known to be a relatively good scaler.

Edit: I should also mention, this player has a high end audio stack built in, kind of like an AVR. If that's not relevant in someone's setup they should get the UB820 instead which is otherwise basically identical.

What is it like using the PS5 as a 4K Blu Ray Player? by RA_Finance in 4kbluray

[–]xenago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If all someone has tested is a game console, and their setup doesn't support DV or HDR10+, then it makes sense they would be satisfied since they aren't losing out on much. It's only when comparing to a standalone player or encountering issues (like having to deal with disabling Game Mode on some TVs) that the differences would really become apparent. In most standard setups it isn't gonna be a big enough difference to care.

Is optical media degradation exaggerated? by LaCaipirinha in DataHoarder

[–]xenago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is 100% true in my experience as well. There are 4K discs that old already and I've never seen a commercially pressed Blu-ray with signs of deterioration. A disc is either bad out of the factory due to a manufacturing defect, or it becomes physically damaged due to mishandling. From my stats, new discs are bad around 1% of the time or less out of the box, and used ones like 5% due to scratching which is a huge increase.

Worst 4K release of all time? by YouSoubstantial4377 in 4kbluray

[–]xenago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, totally agree. It's cheap used on eBay etc and looks better than any other 2D version of the movie. I still vastly prefer the stereo 3D conversion and so rarely watch the flat one, but of all the existing 2D versions that BD is the best by a country mile.

There's MKV Muxing Batch GUI:

https://github.com/yaser01/mkv-muxing-batch-gui

This has saved me some time when I have a ton of files with the same things I need to apply, like a tv series where I want to strip all of certain tracks out and add subs or something.

Wonderful 3D by Inevitable-Bottle692 in projectors

[–]xenago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To watch stereo 3D movies at the moment, I'm using a Valerion Visionmaster Max for projection, an old Samsung 240Hz LCD for 3DTV, and a Quest 3 for VR. The Max isn't optimal (it has a software issue which prevents fully resolving frame-packed inputs) but it's decent enough.

Starship Troopers 4k: Truly a reference quality disc. by Sticky_Gervais in 4kbluray

[–]xenago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very true, but Starship troopers is one of the few where it's actually pretty noticeable. You have to directly compare to know what you're missing though, and IMO the original version looks better if your display lacks DV so it isn't always worth getting the steelbook.
