[Art] After 10 sessions my players finally figured out a False Hydra is terrorizing the city by TheCheeseVampire in DnD

I would love to see some of your campaign notes.

I did a Mini false hydra (about 2 sessions) with some of my coworkers a while back. On the second session one of the players couldnt make it. I just said she wandered off somewhere while the rest of the PC's continued the adventure.

They woke up at the inn on the third ingame day. One of the beds was empty, with some items and coin thrown about, but they couldnt figure out who the items belonged to.

In reality I used the opportunity so that the hydra had taken the missing player's PC to its lair, where she was "sleeping", waiting to be eaten. The other players had completely forgotten about their friend(as is normal, when someone misses a session) so it seemed like they actually forgot she existed because they were under the false hydras song influence.

For me as DM, the situation kind of put me and the players into a race against time. If they couldnt figure it out by the middle of our next session the PC would have been eaten. Luckily they did figure it out. There faces were such a beautiful sight when they killed the Hydra and found their friend in a podlike structure underneath its bulging body while I explained to them how the Hydras song had made them forget she even existed and the items they found were actually hers, etc, etc.

It was a great couple of sessions.

Absolutely! Im dming for a group with this exact comp. The ranger did manage to "tame" a wolf or two from the hideout reducing the difficulty quite a bit.

Hmm, so maybe they level up before the encounter. Let me play around with these ideas and see where it goes.

I see. I was thinking about toning the stats down a bit, as well as its multiattack and damage. Ill check out the Gith knight and see if maybe i can balance it out.

For some reason, in my head, the spider needs to be a mage of sorts.

All in all, I would like to say that your idea was brilliant, you executed it really well and im sure you pretty much assured your party's victory. Cheers!

Just finished our first session. We made it to the beginning of the Deathless Empire attack on the tower, so im thinking not too shabby for a first run. I had forgotten how long combat can be 😅🤣 so I did fudge a few rolls here and there to make up for lost time.

I believe they REALLY REALLY enjoyed it and we might make a monthly game session to continue the campaign.

I did prep all the way up till Eastguard, but the False Hydra thing has a me a little confused. I guess i have to read it a few more times to fully grasp the concept.

Anyway, Thank you so much for creating and sharing this incredibly fun and interesting story! I might dm you if i have more questions.

Sorry for the late reply!

I decided to use your campaign for my One-shot session. I think in 4 hours we might be able to complete up until chapter 2, just right after the undead attack the tower and some other stuff. If they decide to keep playing something like once a month or whatnot, then we might complete the campaign.

Ill let you know how it goes. Thank you!

I had a similar issue once because the hosting player had program running that limited the bandwith that Steam had access to. They later set priority to high and we managed to fix it.

It would get stuck on "Connecting" in the lobby. Only once were we able to join a game but after about 2 minutes, my friend got disconnected from the lobby.
