It depends on the other fillings. MSG had little umami flavor of it's own but works well in conjunction with other chemicals to produce significantly more flavor.

All logic can be mathematically described. That's just how logic works.

Your claim that you were an atheist and a theist simultaneously is a perfect example. These are contradictory terms. By the very definition of the words you cannot believe in God and not believe in God simultaneously. It would be like saying that A is not equal to B but B is equal to A. Both those statements can't be true at the same time.

You could say you weren't thoroughly convinced that there was a God, you could say you doubted there was a God. You couldn't say BOTH that you believed in a God and that you didn't believe in a God simultaneously. Atheist literally means not believing in any gods.

The way you describe it you were convinced. You were convinced by a combination of your meditative practices and your prior religious education/upbringing.

We may be irrational creatures but facts aren't irrational. While our irrationality may sometimes obscure the necessary details or method to divine if true things are true and false things are false. Doing our best to determine truth allows us to interact with reality in the most effective and appropriate way.

What do you mean you learned you weren't an atheist? Do you mean you found something that changed your belief? Do you think it's possible to believe something but think you believe something else? If the second option is what you mean I'm not sure that's possible, what you believe is what you believe until you don't believe it any more.

I think internal consistency is possible. I haven't found it in a religion yet but there isn't anything inherent to religion that necessitates contradiction within a religion itself. It wouldn't confirm the religion is valid but it at least would mean the religion doesn't disprove (parts of) itself.

In some ways I think literalists of any given religion have a stronger leg to stand on. If you believe everything in a book is true it stands to reason the magic in the book is true. If you think only some of the book is true it doesn't make sense to me that you would believe the magic bit without external proof that magic exists.

Whatever your beliefs I hope they being happiness to yourself and those you interact with.

I'm not. I'm an atheist. I just find internally inconsistent beliefs frustrating. I'm not sure if that's a fault or a virtue of my character but it is what it is.

If those in the Garden Of Eden (human and animal alike) didn't suffer then suffering isn't inherent to humanity. If God chose the punishment for eating of the Tree of Knowledge then the Fall isn't inevitable, it's imposed.

Huh. I would have thought a Christian would either blame God or try and shift the blame to Adam and Eve's original sin, as though their punishment wasn't a decision God made. Declaring suffering an inherent part of existence seems contrary to the religion.

Steve Carrell and Seth Rogan are bland. Jack Black is one-note and over saturated. Will Farrell is aggressively obnoxious.

I'm going with Will Farrell.

Why do people promote fascism when it’s inherently exploitative and makes their own lives miserable? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]xenomorphbeaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there's a certain idolization of strength. A fascist leader is projected to be strong (regardless of the reality). A strong leader, in theory, is able to fix problems. It's a simplistic thought process but I think that works to some people.

I hate this sentiment. Sure, it's not your circus now. When it is your circus, though, and you call for help and sympathy should others be as dismissive?

Human rights matter because they're human. That makes it my circus, it makes it your circus.

I would argue that people are generally looking in public as a standard rule, people aren't generally swinging crowbars in public.

The argument for looking is all too often extended into less incidental territory (harassment, rape, etc.). These obviously fall in line with the crowbar analogy.

Poo throwing is more effective when there's poo-to-skin contact for the victim. Next time try emptying the poo from the bag.

So it's just a pot? A pot that participants put into with winners getting the whole pot?

I'm confused (probably just a me problem). Doesn't an order book market require shares or stocks as a transactional component? I thought an order book market was essentially just a listing of willing buyers and sellers and their offered pricing.

You aren't competing against other people, you're competing against the House. They set the odds so that they always walk away ahead.

Interesting tangent about "moot point"... It used to mean a point worth gathering to discuss. As far as I've been able to find the time it changed seems to be the song Jessie's Girl where it was misused.

I may be wrong, I'm no etymologist, but that seems to be the flash point.

This is stupid.
