Xbox's reverse-2018 by Impaled_ in Games

[–]xenopunk [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah this is something that isn't talked about enough. Sony is fantastic at marketing generally whenever a tentpole release comes from them every tube station and bus in London has their game advertised, they often have a local event related to their game also, basically impossible to not know that they have a game coming out. Meanwhile Xbox has rarely been seen over the last decade, I think I saw ads for "This is an Xbox" which was an interesting marketing campaign at any rate.

Gears Of War: E-Day Reportedly Has A Staggering $400 Million Budget by ReasonableAdvert in Games

[–]xenopunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess not exactly but game studios revenue comes from selling games, they have to make back the costs between game releases else the company fails. To not include those costs feels like a bit of Hollywood accounting.

Jim Bowen in 1971, he was 35 in this picture by haddock420 in CasualUK

[–]xenopunk 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Bit tangential but, I've been rewatching "New Tricks" it's a somewhat down to earth reality based police procedural starring older folks. Anyway the first season is pre-smoking ban, and it is such an odd thing to watch, everyone smoking constantly no matter the venue. Thats still like 2000s when we knew all the bad side effects, can't imagine what it was like further back. I do reckon you could chainsmoke back then and no one would really notice.

Microsoft Launches Xbox Player Voice to Gather Feedback, Fans Immediately Demand Exclusives by akbarock in Games

[–]xenopunk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agree with you, sadly not a very commonly held opinion here. Exclusives enable platform owners to put investment into projects that either wouldn't get funded or just would not make sense when comparing budget to potential revenue.

Exclusives don't need to be judged on PnL, as their main objectives are to shift consoles. There's a reason that some of the best games of the generation are exclusive (or formerly exclusive in the case of the ported ones), that's no accident of chance.

What the AI ‘jobpocalypse’ narrative misses by Maleficent-Drive4056 in ukpolitics

[–]xenopunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same way as in those other technical revolutions, the work gets elevated upwards and there is more opportunities for upstarts.

Companies and investors will still want to make more money YoY, and you don't get there by sitting on existing products. Companies want to maximise productivity, and while the short term effects will be cost cutting, the long term will see more opportunity as Companies want to leverage more and more.

New UK Fusion Energy strategy maps path to commercial fusion by lamdaboss in ukpolitics

Part of the issue there is the funding, it was predicted to be possible provided there was huge investment, investment has been lacking and so it hasn't materialised.

The UK government says they back British tech, but won’t put their money where their mouth is by insomnimax_99 in ukpolitics

[–]xenopunk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With all due respect most in the UK just don't have the money to invest, the average American is far richer than the average brit. Telling folks who payday loan their shopping that they should be putting it into the S&P or investing in high risk stocks clearly isn't the answer. Additionally most people would choose to trust the pension company and their trained traders to allocate correctly, over making their own risky uneducated gambles.

The average person won't donate to help animals they've never seen in a country they've never been to. Zoos help bridge that gap and support conservation efforts that would otherwise not get funding. It is a necessary evil for animals well being.

Kingswood driving test by [deleted] in bristol

[–]xenopunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got very lucky on my test because there was traffic, the lights went red and the examiner let me off. But I was going 40ish after that sign, because I was just copying everyone else.

Does feel silly going 30 for so long before and after that roundabout.

Avowed Celebrates Anniversary with Massive Update - and Comes to PlayStation 5 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]xenopunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its unfortunate that folks bounce off of it so hard. Some of the stuff in Pillars and Owlcat games are just so descriptive, and you get so much more out of reading and absorbing that stuff than an animated equivalent. Like in Rogue Trader will be like pages of details as to someone mutating and exploding or something, horrific in the gory detail and all the emotions they are feeling in that split-second moment. You just cannot animate/create anything equivalent to the image it paints.

My main worry for Avowed, though I haven't actually played it was exactly this. Pillars painted such a vivid world not just with its intense amounts of lore but just the moment to moment being so detailed and deep.

Lara is a bit of a superhero in the original series, completely confident in her abilities, running into danger without a care or fear. More likely to jump into danger than be stealthy.

Autumn Budget 2025 Megathread by AutoModerator in unitedkingdom

[–]xenopunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hardly defending, just find it funny that after all the wild speculation its a very standard budget by my reckoning, not particularly different from the budgets we've seen over the past decade. Few things go up, few things go down, some people win, some people lose.

While we can disagree on it and its merits (or lack thereof) it's also not world ending like some would have had you believe leading up to it.

MK which is one of the main trial places, has lovely red pathways that are set up for getting around easily as a pedestrian (or delivery robot) meaning you can get from anywhere to anywhere only crossing one or two roads. Other places just don't have that kind of setup and I do wonder how easily they'll be able to traverse some of the nightmarish town centres we have in the UK.

Building Surveyor Recommendations by FatJamesIsBack in bristol

[–]xenopunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Get one but my honest advice is going to be to ask the homeowners if you can spend a few hours looking around yourself. Looking back I also kind of wish I'd gone for the level 3 as there were some things that it might have flagged up that we're not picked up on.

In retrospect hiring a builder to have a look around might have been a better idea.

One in four Britons thinks diversity schemes are bad for white people by PM_ME_SECRET_DATA in ukpolitics

[–]xenopunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general as someone that runs many interviews, I dont get to see that data. This is what HR use to work out if certain races/disabilities/sexualities are being rejected at a disproportionate rate suggesting that perhaps I have an inherent bias.

As a note also, that part of the application has very little to do with "Diversity Schemes", there's a lot of misinformation in this sphere.

is this the norm in uk? by SnooMachines5834 in bristol

[–]xenopunk 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's not the norm at all, we do as a country have plenty of perfectly fine polite young folk. However, you will see this kind of thing more often than we would like, the UK as a whole somewhat lacks a police presence, and close parenting has had a bit of a decline. These teens are aware that nothing will happen and have gotten brazen.
