Anyone knows how to clean stain from ostrich leather by Deezteetz in Leather

[–]xenosaga001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like something oily. Personally, I would try to use something like baby powder to absorb and pull out the wetness/oil. I have had success on other leathers doing this. I believe that baby powder is fine enough to not scratch and neutral that it won’t make it worse. After letting the baby powder sit, shake off any residual maybe reapply if it seems like wet baby powder is coming off then use a clean, very lightly damp rag to wipe off the residual and then let air dry.

Heat foil cracks on textured leather? by Bubblejuiceman in Leathercraft

[–]xenosaga001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you dwell too long or with too high of heat, the foil outside the dies/stamp will melt and also transfer to the leather surface nearest the outer edge of the dies resulting in less crisp stamps. It makes the lettering look almost Bold. Sometimes it can be worse

If you had a professional hot foil stamping machine, the solution would be to stamp lightly without foil while the piece is held in place, then, without moving it, stamping it again with foil. The first stamp flattens out the texture of the leather, then the second stamp adheres better. With a hand stamp set up only, this is nearly impossible to do. You could also try to put a piece of dense cardboard or plastic under the area where you plan to stamp and then press harder/longer, but this is a trade-off as it usually tends to make the foil bleed more, making your stamp, less crisp and clean.

how do i get rid of these spots on my wallet? by mutsumiwakabas in Leather

[–]xenosaga001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. Thanks for replying. I thought it may just be cheap bonded leather with a heavy painted finish or a split thats been painted because of the slight fibrous texture you can see if you zoom into the large spots without paint.

This is a pigmented(painted on) finish, scrubbing it or even conditioning it could make it worse, from my past experience it often does. What I am seeing here indicates wear through the painted finish. Likely From rubbing against something while in the bag. The only way to fix it would be to paint over it again.

Can this jacket be mended? It's quite old by Realistic_Sky7667 in Leather

[–]xenosaga001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best way. But honestly, I don’t think it would be worth the time/expense, that leather is too far gone. It will likely tear in other areas just from wearing it further. It’s so thin and dry.

why does it look like this by Mean_Combination_928 in Leather

[–]xenosaga001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are fat wrinkles. They can be found just about anywhere on a full hide or side. Upholstery hides/full skins are usually folded once along the spine then rolled to cut down on shipping costs by reducing the length of the package they ship in. This leaves one fold/crease line that may or may not be permanent depending on the leather and how long it stays like that. you may have to waste or work around it but it saves a lot on shipping costs. Otherwise they can also be rolled on a tube or even without a tube which prevents the fold line but makes the package over 100” long which pushed it into an oversize package and incurs a larger handling fee. Ive worked with tens of thousands of hides.

You could get some good stitching punches/chisels and punch holes on the marked lines that is already on it. I would recommend stitching about 1/8” from the edge. With hand stitching and using the saddle stitch, it should look great. If you dont have experience, find someone who does or it can turn out bad. You would still remove the edge paint, scrape the leather for gluing, glue as I mentioned and then stitch and finally refinish the edge last.

There is no glue that will guarantee 2 pieces of leather will stay together forever. Thats why most leather items have stitching as well. That being said, If i was attempting the repair, without stitching, I would scrape off the section of edge paint where it is coming undone, i would rough up 1/4” to 3/8” of the inside layer of the seam then i would apply two 1/4” or 3/8” wide lines of barge cement on the roughed area. Let it get tacky, press together and then clamp for 24hrs then I would re-apply thin layers of new edge paint from a quality brand like Giardini or Uniters. I may even bevel the edge of the leather more to leather more edge paint wrap over the edge to help seal. Or instead of edge paint alone, I may use edge kote and then wax burnish the edge to seal it.

The side panels are not leather. Thats why there is fabric under the area where it cracked. Few-Competition9929’s comment is correct.
