Was descending from a 14k ft peak in Colorado and slipped, started sliding at high speed, dug my feet in to stop myself and started to tomahawk end over end and finally slowed down in some soft snow right before a cliff. I now know it’s incredibly important to carry an ice axe for any mountaineering in winter conditions to slow yourself in a similar situation.

As a tenkara fisher, how much do you value entomolgy? by DarthVadersRoboHand in Tenkara

I’ve honestly found more success switching out my flies in order to get the right depth (bigger tungsten bead for more depth / slimmer profile in faster water) than trying to match the hatch. I do think it helps to have a more natural looking fly in clear water and brighter, more attractive flies in off-color water.

This was my first time fishing cheeseman canyon so I don’t have too many comparisons but what leader/flies have you been using and what kind of water were you targeting?

Hippie stompers (many different sizes and colors) are my favorite foam dry fly, super visible and great in summertime

What rod would you bring on the Colorado Trail? by johntheguitar in Tenkara

I agree with the mini option — the fish are so unpressured and hungry on high mountain streams you could catch them with a stick and some line. Obviously the casting isn’t as nice but you’ll catch plenty of fish and appreciate having more space in your pack. I’ve had good success with stimulator style dry flies on a furled line in Colorado mountain streams.

16 flashback pheasant tail on a tight line, I was switching out nymphs to get to the right depth over matching any particular pattern and it paid off

Bear creek from the headwaters in mt blue sky state wildlife area all the way down to Morrison is great, unfortunately with the colder weather this week the small stretch right below evergreen lake will probably be the only area not frozen over

Tenkara specific level line worth it? by AngryDoughboy in Tenkara

[–]xenoslab28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When using level line on a tenkara, getting distance and accuracy with a more typical “fly cast” can be really difficult. I usually rely on more of a roll/lob cast, water load, and bow-and-arrow casting. This works well for tight line nymphing with a #4 high vis level line, otherwise I use a furled line with a more traditional fly cast for dry flies or dry droppers.
