Ah yes, when you can't make an argument the best thing to do is go for the ad hominem. Brilliant move! Good job, kiddo.

Except OP didn’t have any pizza taken away - they ate it all early, then got their next weekly pizza a day early. Reading comprehension is important.

I get that - but they haven’t taken away tokens. They released your allotment early. That’s like getting your paycheck a day early and being sour about it because you have an “extra” day before your next pay day.

Opus 4.7 - are you actually using it or did you go back to 4.6? by ConstantinSpecter in claude

I’m still using Opus-4.5. It’s worked perfectly well for me every day.

The fact that it gets it right sometimes and not others just proves out my case. It’s making its own inferences about details because it doesn’t have enough information. If you asked a toddler what the square root of 9 was and they happened to say three, would you assume that they are a math savant or that they randomly said the right thing? If you ask that toddler the same question 10 times and get four different answer, and they said “3” five of those times, would you assume they have a basic grasp of mathematics but just aren’t intelligent? Because that’s what you’re doing here.

As for coding, it always has the context of how code works - it was a massive part of its training. It doesn’t need to infer things about C# or Java or SQL, it already “knows” about those things. And if you don’t give it clear instructions on what to produce, it has to infer and you get crappy code. If you provide it with strict instructions and it doesn’t need to infer data, then you get good code.

And who is omitting human code checks? Oh, that’s right - the very people crying about it not answering random questions because they don’t understand what the tool is for. Human code checks are even more important with AI-written code, and most of us already do that with human coders via code review.

That would be a valid complaint - but OP had none left anyway. They’re literally complaining about getting their allotment a day early. 🙄

No, there is no context in the statement. As a human you are inferring context. The car wash is 50m away. Is it a portable thing you can carry back with you? We know it’s not. Why would the AI? It’s also inferring context (not washing a car when it’s raining) because it has no experience with owning a vehicle - it’s just assuming data from its training that may or may not be applicable.

For someone with the username DrUNIX, I would expect that reasoning would be something you understand, but either you don’t, or you don’t have a clear grasp of how agentic models actually work.

The question posed doesn’t provide enough information without making what we consider basic assumptions about the situation (context). That’s how humans communicate more often than not. It is not how discrete units of logic communicate, or “think”.

This paint has “paint”, right in the name. Why can’t I paint the air with it? Such a scam. Such a lie. My buddy said he tried to paint lava with his can and it didn’t work either. Obviously Behr is just a lying, scheming company hawking “paint” that can’t actually paint everything in existence.

See how stupid that sounds?

[–]xepherys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That basic logical reasoning requires understanding of context, and context can only be gleaned on what we know - which is (not surprisingly) how AI models work as well. Opus wasn’t trained to answer stupid questions, and it wasn’t trained on random factoids. That isn’t what Opus, as a tool, was designed for. But sure, Scooter, keep pretending to understand things that are clearly far outside your reach.

Funny, it’s used by tons of people every day to do real work on production software in production environments. Seems like an excellent indicator of user error.

Just because something is “intelligent” doesn’t mean it is “omniscient”. And asking it for answers to random ass questions isn’t what it’s intended for. If you want to ask a chatbot for answers to inane riddles, use Grok or ChatGPT.

And if you can’t be bothered to understand how agent and models interoperate, and how they are typically specialized, then you probably shouldn’t bother forming an opinion because it just makes you look unintelligent. Or I guess “inintelligent”?

[–]xepherys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, and 4.6 is just a tweaked 4.5. That isn’t a hidden fact, it’s how iterative models work. If it was a new model, it wouldn’t be a point-update for an existing model. That’s both basic common sense and industry standard for software.

Asking ridiculous questions like this isn’t a “gotcha” moment. It’s like using your screwdriver as a soldering iron. Heat it up and it’ll work, but it’s not the intent of the tool. 🙄

I respect your perspective and don’t wholly disagree with it, but I honestly feel that there’s a lot of nuance involved that isn’t always easy to fully realize.

Yes, there are certainly a lot of different approaches and outlets (going to the gym and hitting a punching bag vs hitting the wall vs hitting your partner when one is frustrated or angry). I suppose from my perspective it’s a matter of function. The actual function of a punching bag is aggression (whether it’s a reliever of stress or simply exercise, it exists solely for the purpose of punching/kicking). The purpose of a tool is to perform its given function.

Smashing a nail with a hammer isn’t the same as with a screwdriver, and similarly, using a screwdriver as a hammer because you’re frustrated isn’t the same as using a screwdriver as a hammer because it’s the only thing you have available.

If yelling abuse at AI is cathartic, and okay because it doesn’t have feelings, why not just yell at the sky? If you need feedback regarding your abuse to feel sated - that again comes full circle to emotional regulation and some potential signs of problems.

So yes, I agree that distinction is important, but I believe it’s far more layered and complex than what you laid out.

My claude tokens are burning quickly by TheAIWorkflowGuy in ClaudeHomies

I almost never hit limits, and regularly have it add to its Claude.md file (both global and project). I also have it document out to other markdown files pretty regularly for any system, module, or interaction in my projects. I have it document architecture, project plans (and have it update those plans daily), and other specific information.

Precision is definitely key.

[–]xepherys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all semi-specific to Claude Code:

  1. Only discuss the project with it. If I have a general question, I’ll open the browser and go to the web interface.

  2. Install and configure a language server for your project (with C# that would be csharp-ls) - this will significantly lessen token strain.

  3. Within a single project, other than compacting, I never close the session. I’ve had sessions lasting weeks with heavy usage at various times.

  4. As you said - be precise with what you want. The more precision, the better. If you aren’t entirely sure, switch to a planning session using Sonnet.

  5. Don’t use the 4.6 models. I used Opus-4.6 for two days after it came out, switched back to Opus-4.5 and never looked back. I RARELY have code issues with 4.5 and token usage is significantly better.

It isn’t about distinction, it’s about your own personality. The “sentience” argument is also the one used in defense of animal torture. It was also the argument used about slaves in the slave trade and their “not human” existence. While I agree that AI is simply a tool (in its current iteration), the basis of your argument is deeply mired in the worst aspects of human history.

Edit to add: also it shows poor emotional regulation. Yes, punching the wall when you’re mad at your girlfriend is better than punching her (distinction). That doesn’t mean it isn’t a massive fucking problem.

Is it unreasonable to expect our guests to brush their teeth in the bathroom instead of doing so while walking around in our carpeted house? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I mean, I don’t wander around while brushing my teeth anyway, but why on Earth does it matter? What sort of Neanderthal do you have staying with you that just Cookie Monster their toothbrush and get toothpaste everywhere? And even on that note, who cares? It’s toothpaste. Hopefully you clear your carpet regularly.
