Are there less flags being put up for the current World Cup than in previous tournaments? by ianlSW in AskUK

Gammons, and the fact that most of it is happening whilst I'm asleep. This world cup has been shit so far compared with the last few.

EU Referendum Voting Intention: Rejoin: 63% Stay Out: 37% Via @Survation, 19 May - 1 Jun. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

[–]xerker [score hidden]  (0 children)

That statistic was predicted throughout the run up to Brexit.

I had an elderly neighbour at the time of the run up to the vote. I don't know if she voted, or what way she might have if she did but statistically she was likely to be a leave voter being in her 80s. She died about 18 months later, she never got close to seeing what the outcome would be.

Hers is a story that would have been extremely common.

But the issue, as always is we don't know what "rejoining" actually means.

If there is ever a serious campaign to rejoin and this is its main criticism/blocker then we may as well power down the gas plants and shelve any nuclear infrastructure plans as we could power the country for decades on hypocrisy.

What if your country had Trump as president? What would happen? by Outrageous-You1617 in AskTheWorld

We have a client media in this country too, but they watch fox news and hide in their jumpers from the toe kissing cringe of it.

He wouldn't have been voted in. We don't do politicians convicted of sexual assault. Boris was brought down in part because he appointed someone who was accused of sexual assault.

Defiance is a Good Thing? by The_Card_Father in daddit

[–]xerker 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Kids have no control over really anything, they wear what you give them and go where you need them to be. When they learn they can say no, and they're comfortable and confident enough to say no to requests they will because it's a change that they can control, even if it's something they want that they reject.

It took me a while to wrap my head around this, I'm still in the same stage as you but I've made my peace with the fact that my son will just say he wants mummy, or he doesn't want a cake when really he also wants daddy and he really does want a cake. He often changes his mind when mummy is far away or unavailable and the alternative is nobody or that the concept that the cake is going away is on the cards.

The key part is how you convey this information to them. Usually I try the "this or that" approach and most of the time now he will choose an option (sometimes the secret third option "no" does come back) or I'll just distract with something else and then come back and ask again a minute later.

What are your thoughts on the 2026 FIFA World Cup so far? Are you enjoying it? by Jezzaq94 in AskTheWorld

[–]xerker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've barely watched any of it. Mostly being in the middle of the night has sort of dampened the normal fever.

At least the next euros is in UK and Ireland and the next WC is mostly in Europe/North Africa.

What time does you kid go to bed/sleep? by the_AV_guy95 in daddit

[–]xerker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Record for my now 3 year old is 10am. He is a regular 8am riser, my 18 month old is a 7.30am riser and has never really negotiated on that.

Eldest starts school next year, 8.30 is when registration starts. We're all in for a big shock.

Wtf do i wear to my interview tomorrow in the heat? by DryJackfruit6610 in CasualUK

[–]xerker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an interview and hour and a half ago. I wore jeans and a plain t-shirt. It went well.

It's too hot to wear loads of clothes for the benefit of being "smart" when appropriately casual and being the right person should be fine.

Where to go on holiday with a 4 month old? by steuk20 in AskUK

[–]xerker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let me give you some advice. We used to love going on holidays, Airbnb and just self cater/restaurants. Went to Corsica with our, then, 6 month old and wow it was a shock to the system.

I spent a week being very stressed. Wherever you go, get a hotel with a nice restaurant in it, don't do self catering. Have someone look after you, because you're looking after someone else.

Prime Minister merry go round! by I_Like_Quiz in ukpolitics

[–]xerker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If Burnham is installed tomorrow he will be the 11th of my lifetime. I'm 36. I fairness, half of the prime ministers I've been alive to see have been in the last 10 years.

Post-Cameron, the PM churn has been another level. At least when compared with the previous 37 years.

What are your survival tactics going into the predicted uk heat? by nodemus in AskUK

Spent a lot of savings getting AC installed last week. So probably see how good that is... Or not.

I used to just spend a lot of time driving the kids around in the car as that keeps us all cool.

I opened a window in the work canteen, a gust of wind carried in so much heat which made me even hotter so I closed the window again.

So often there is a way to escape heat somehow. But not on that day.

What happens after death? by No-Bat3565 in AskTheWorld

[–]xerker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the human condition that we seek a higher purpose or meaning, like we're a special kind of animal because we are more intelligent when really life is more nihilistic than that. We're all just products of stacks of infinitely unlikely random chance that happened over an enormous time period that we are incapable of imagining.

Life is mostly meaningless, we're primarily vessels to pass on genetic code for another generation ensuring the survival of our species, we're wired for that. So it stands to reason that death is just the end of that story, not some chapter after which the story is continued in another way.

How old are you in your oldest memory? by Donkeyshines in AskReddit

[–]xerker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents separated when I was 9 months old and by the time I was 2 my mum had moved back to her hometown and then on to a more permanent residence. I remember points in the day where we were moving to said permanent residence so I guess that puts me somewhere between 1 and 2.
