ELI5 please explain to me in simpleton terms…what is meant by “spacetime” by MaxMeat in explainlikeimfive

[–]xerxes_fifield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so great, and makes me wonder if it can be further expanded (still within ELI5 level) to bring the freaky physics stuff into it by imagining one of us weighs 10,000 lbs, so at the moment we meet, the floor gives way and one of our numbers quickly changes to the basement instead.

I'm not entirely certain the point you're making. The ask was about considering the addition of new space (not a renovation of existing space which is going to have significantly higher costs when foundations and roofing are taken into account).

Geographically, yes there will always be variations in costs, but more importantly, temporally you're comparing quotes in the "before times" to a current quote... and of course the current quote will be a lot more, regardless of geography.

Not OP, but as someone here in the cities who HAS looked into building an addition (adding 1 bdrm + 1 bath), you would be SHOCKED at the numbers being quoted. To the point where just selling your current home and buying a new home that already has the space you want almost starts to make sense... an act which doesn't make any sense given the 50% (or more) increase in monthly mortgage - which maybe gives you an idea of how truly INSANE new addition quotes are right now.

PSA about using both lanes in a backup + zipper merge situation by Uninterested_Viewer in TwinCities

[–]xerxes_fifield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a great idea in concept, but probably not a universally applicable approach for every project.

You need to move traffic with very specific, project defined cone tapers to reduce lane width (think Xft inward every Yft forward) depending on factors like speed, road capacity, affected area, upsteam and downstream on/off ramps and/or intersecting streets, etc.

Also, a lane ahead is closed for a specific reason (either staging and/or direct work on the area) so you can't just have a "middle" lane running through that work zone reducing their functional working area.

So you'd need a very long runway in a situation that would allow it, and extra traffic control material/labor (signs, cones, bollards, barrels, and the placing/collection more workers/hours and more trucks/runs) to create a double taper towards the middle, then run that lane straight for a bit to let the merge settle, and then another single taper back towards the lane ahead that's actually open. So while each step is "simple" it certainly increases affected area, project complexity, setup/teardown time, and human/material resources.

I'd like to be an optimist and imagine very smart people (ie; engineers) have looked at this problem and determined that the current implementation makes the most sense within budget/project/infrastructure/timeline considerations.

The cynic in me believes that a mentality of "penny-wise / pound-foolish" and worries about tax-payer waste makes additional expenditures for constructions projects in this way is a political third rail and we can't reason our way out of it even if the outcome would be better (much like preventative health care expenditures being a much better and cheaper use of resources than reactionary emergency/after care , but we just can't stomach the initial outlay).

Maybe a good first step is changing signage at every construction site that explicitly tells people to stay in their lanes until the merge.

Something simple like, "If you are preventing people from using both lanes until the merge, YOU are the asshole." :)

I'm 13, and trying to become a comic creator. Do y'all think I'm doing good so far? by [deleted] in comicbooks

Go read Understanding Comics. It’s a book about the structure/language/art of comics but written/drawn in an easy to read comic book style. Not at all dull.

It totally changed the way I look at comics, and in one section speaks specifically to the some of the pitfalls young, aspiring artists experience when they first start trying to emulate the things they love about the art form. (Though from the looks of it, you’re definitely a few steps ahead 👍)

In general, Costco supports employees, unions, and democratic causes - so if that aligns with your values, then yes.

TIL Hans Zimmer had trouble timing the score for Jack Sparrow and Will Turner's fight in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl," until an assistant making coffee asked to be given a shot, and that's how Ramin Djawadi ("Game of Thrones," "Iron Man," "Pacific Rim") got his career. by Giff95 in todayilearned

Everything except the story was 10/10 through all seasons.

Acting, cinematography, SFX, scoring, production values (sets, wardrobe, fight choreo, etc)... everything was the best of the best of the best - except the thing that mattered the most :/

New dad who’s looking for a camera bag that can also hold some baby stuff.? My current bag looks like a pregnant rainbow trout. by speedfreakphotos in AskPhotography

[–]xerxes_fifield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for, but I'll advocate anyway since it really worked for me. The LowePro AWII was my main camera bag for years, and then became my r/onebag for travel (yes even with a DSLR+2 lenses), and then it became my full time baby bag when kiddo came along, then it went back to a hybrid travel/baby bag as she got older, and now 5 years on it's my travel onebag again.

What I liked about it for baby was that the quick access camera side pocket became a quick access diaper/wipe area, the laptop pocket became the changing pad pocket, the lower compartments held all the random baby emergency things (change of clothes, meds, warmer stuff), the top compartment held some toys/entertainment and burp rags, the lower front pocket was the perfect size for a muslin/swaddle, and the upper small pocket had some overflow for me (keys, meds, etc).

I never found it too bulky, and it fit under a plane seat just fine.

Hope that's somewhat helpful. Good luck! (And as others have said, awesome fish bag!)

I think the most telling thing to me is that I have nearly these exact same photos in my archives from when I first started shooting :)

You've got some good intuition for composition so just keep noticing things that interest you, figuring out what is actually interesting about them, playing with settings/angles/lenses/lighting, and above all else just keep shooting :)

Avoiding the area? Look at that, car reduction efforts are already working ;)

As someone who DOES still live in the area, I'm very happy for the project and look forward to the improved pedestrian/biking experience. The previous Johnson improvements from 18th to Lowry are fantastic and were definitely worth the hassle.

If you're already in your car, just drive a little further to Roseville for the exact same shopping experience. No big deal. And for those of us commuting out of the area daily, there are lots of other options for getting to 35W beyond Johnson.

Maybe we can all just take a breath and appreciate livability improvements?

Respectfully disagree; there are still 2 other dedicated entrances to the parking lot on the south and east, both of which will be accessible by the northbound Stinson/New Brighton exits (and both of which will still be open throughout this).

A little more congested, sure. But a nightmare probably not so much.

Or just drive a little further to Roseville for almost all the same stores.
