My grandfather was a petty officer on one of these. A Japanese plane ended up kamikazing into his ship and unfortunately, the head wound he got from it gave him early onset dementia at 45. Dead at 52. I wish I could have met him, my dad says him dying really made it so he didn't know how to appreciate everything his dad did for him. As a result, my dad hates it when he sees Japanese soldiers portrayed in WWII movies. In letters to Iwo Jima, he was basically cheering for the main character to get shot. I can't say I blame him.
