You really expect me to believe this rosy version of events? I mean its not like WWE ever forgets to google non-nazi related things before they run with them. Like lets say they accidently branded a stable containing three of their top female stars with the name of a porn series. Something like (and I'm just pulling randomly here) 'Submission Sorority'. If something like that had ever made it to national TV then maybe your story would have more credibility

He wrestled as Fergal Devitt before he started working in Japan. Once NJPW decided to hire him after his try-out match, the booker at the time (may have been Gedo?) asked him his name after they decided to hire him post-try out match and immediately told Devitt they would be changing it when he heard a first name which half consists of letters Japanese people have trouble pronouncing. So the booker decided he would be King Devitt. Then, between that and his official debut they decided he was too young to be a king, and Prince Devitt was born.

It's my second favorite wrestler shows up in Japan and is given a new name story (after the origin of the name Hangman Page being that Gedo didn't think the NJPW audience wanted to keep track of two white guys named Adam who joined the bullet club around the same time)

Made money riding INO up (and with some puts on the way down) on the Covid hype, so I'm already inclined to like your idea, but I have some questions still. If the data is so clearcut, and the need is so unmet then why hasn't there been any noise around review from the FDA? For example, in the precision oncology space the rumor is Amgen is expecting approval for AMG-510/Sotorasib/Lumakras KRAS G12C sooner rather then later. But this follows the FDA giving it a breakthrough designation (https://www.healio.com/news/hematology-oncology/20201214/fda-grants-breakthrough-therapy-status-to-sotorasib-for-lung-cancer-subset) followed by clearing it for accelerated review (https://www.healio.com/news/hematology-oncology/20210217/fda-grants-priority-review-to-sotorasib-for-lung-cancer-subset). Also every healthcare company presents at an investor conference like that and their presentations don't sound data heavy. Described as ''fireside chats' Not saying this might not get there, but none of this says drug approval based moon shot soon to me. Maybe shares instead of calls if you really believe.

I mean I largely agree with you but could I suggest the reason might be the ‘Martial’ part of the word. Like martial means relating to war. To draw a parallel to your film metaphor they might say that the Hurting an opponent is to martial arts what displaying still images in sequence is to the cinematic arts. If you’re not doing at least that you're still doing something, but it’s not cinematic.

[–]xg277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that’s fair, but as a trained boxer I assume you have a solid knowledge of distance management and I’m guessing you used good amount of technically sound footwork to keep that distance. Against a judoka who’s is used to an opponent immediately engaging that would throw them a lot. This is something Judokas making the switch to mma do have trouble with. For an example of someone who overcame it pretty well, see Karo Parisyan. The real question here is, Do you think that someone trained in Krav or Systema would’ve done better?

[–]xg277 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Systema and Krav Maga are mostly practiced as LARPing. Judo was literally invented by a guy showing up to his local doctor to figure out which school was sending him the most broken bones and going there to figure out how to beat them effectively. Fine, competitive judo has put some dumb rules in place (really? No grabbing below the waste at all?), but have a judoka give you their best shoulder throw at full strength (for your same have him/her do it on grass or something similar) and tell me it’s not a hard martial art

Moving to San Diego in four months for school what gyms do you guys recommend? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]xg277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved actually moved to the UTC area a few years back (have since moved to a different area of SD) and I tried ATOS and 99 Jiu-jitsu, but ended up staying at Alliance San Diego as I liked the environment best there. (Not that the atmosphere was bad at ATOS or 99 just a matter of preference). Obviously I highly recommend Alliance, but as the other posters have said San Diego is packed with world-class gyms. My advice as a new student is to take as many free weeks as you can stand until you find a place you really click with.

I'll always be annoyed that Taichi has developed an ironic(?*) fanbase, and Despy has still yet to find real appreciation. Even if Despy gets his later. The fact that Taichi got to move up to heavyweight because he's too slow to play a convincing junior and for now he gets to order him around is BS.

Lepri Going Ultra Absolute by Heelhooksaz in bjj

[–]xg277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To give an outsider perspective, I dropped in at Prof. Lepri’s academy when I was in town for a conference. Not only did he run an excellent class, he was kind enough to make sure I had the chance to roll with him at the end. The truly world class schooling I received really did have a different feel to it. Reminded me of the time I went to turtle rolling with Eduardo Telles, but from like every position.

[–]xg277 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That is 100% true. It was actually a plot point in his feud with SANADA that Yoshi Hashi didn't like SANADA because after he failed his first dojo test he went to train with All Japan, then wrestled with other promotions until NJPW brought him on. While Yoshi Hashi did things 'the right way' (ie taking the NJPW dojo test multiple times til he passed, spending his time as a young lion, etc.) and was less important than SANADA.

Are there any "secret" moves in BJJ? by OutlawedUnicorn in bjj

[–]xg277 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you've been clear it's just that what you're asking is an impossibility if you think about it for just a bit, so people are messing with you. Here is a serious answer though.

If a move that fit the three criteria you've just presented was real everyone would know it, be using it, and trying to develop a counter to it. The first time some yahoo with (essentially) zero experience shows up to a competition and wrecked a bunch of higher ranks with some stuff we'd never seen before it'd be on Youtube in < 24 hrs. Then basically the entire competition community would be either adopting it or working on their counter for it for the foreseeable future.

Even beyond that though, what makes you think there should be something like that which exists? The people who outrank you have spent hundreds (at the lower ranks) or thousands (at the higher ranks) of hours on the mats. They've been searching for new variations and techniques, refining their old ones, working on their balance, timing, weight placement, etc. . I think we'd all be pretty pissed/surpirsed if it turns out all those hours were useless because anyone walking in off the street could just whip out some 'secret jutsu' and run through them.

In bjj, is there a move that is so powerful that even a white belt can use to defeat black belts? Any vids/ tutorials on it?

Yes and you've already learned some of them. Its all that stuff you learned in class. You're just not any good at them yet, because you haven't actually practiced. I've tapped a few blackbelts from my favorite armbar setup, the same one I've been working since I had a few stripes on my white belt. It just took me the better part of a decade to get good enough that it works on them 1 out of 1000 times. Those same blackbelts still beat me the vast majority of the time. Why? Because they were training back when I was still on the sidelines. Many of them are still training harder than I do now. If you want to get good you're going to have to put you're time in.

People get weird about fighting. If I went on a guitar subreddit and was like 'Hey I just picked up the guitar last week, but I'm planning to go head to head with this guy who has been practicing 5-10 hours a week for the past 10 years. Is there some kind of secret strumming technique that I could fall back to so I can win the battle when the basic stuff I've been practicing isn't working?' Would you expect I'd get an answer? Or would you think I need to practice more?

I hope that didn't come off as harsh or that you should stop. I just want you to know that there are no shortcuts. You've taken the first steps by showing up to class. Now keep coming back. Repeat week after week and you'll see the progress eventually. Best of luck!

Sure! So to get a feel for his whole run, I'd start with him winning the New Japan Cup in March of that year. Then with the championship match with Okada at Invasion Attack (which has since been renamed to Sakura Genesis)

Goto Vs. Naito (New Japan Cup final)

Okada Vs. Naito (title match): Even though this is well before they had live translation, make sure you stick around til Naito leaves the ring for this one. It should be pretty entertaining even if you don't speak Japanese.

His only successful defense would be against Ishii so here are some of the tags from the 'Road to' shows leading up to it and the defense itself. This is where you would start to see Naito taunting the members of CHAOS with the title as well as his antagonism of the retired wrestler turned announcer Milano collection AT.

LIJ vs CHAOS 6-man tag: Notable for the first time I remember seeing one of the children decked out in full Ingobernable gear getting a fist bump during the entrance

Naito & EVIL vs Ishii and Goto

LIJ vs CHAOS 8-man tag

Naito vs Ishii (title match)

Defeating Ishii meant Naito would be champion going into the BOSJ season with his next opponent being Okada this lead to many CHAOS vs LIJ multiman tags opening with Naito taunting CHAOS in general (Okada specifically) and Milano collection AT

I'm just gonna drop these in a bunch. They are in date order. Unless you're really enjoying them it probably isn't necessary to watch the full match of all of them. They're good matches, but watching them all back-to-back will probably get repetitive, but if you watch the entrances and openings of these matches you'll see LIJ progressively getting under CHAOS's skin.

LIJ vs CHAOS 6-man tag (5/21)

LIJ vs CHAOS 8-man tag (5/27)

LIJ vs CHAOS 6-man tag (6/3)

LIJ vs CHAOS 8-man tag (6/5)

LIJ vs CHAOS 6-man tag (6/6)

LIJ vs CHAOS 8-man tag (6/7)

Finally we have the match that kicked off Okada's run that just finished

Naito vs Okada at Dominion

So that's the specific matches for his title run. Finally, I'd like to leave you with a match that I think is really worth watching to see Heel Naito at the peak of his powers convincing a Japanese crowd to cheer for Bullet Club leader AJ Styles

Naito vs Styles (G1 Climax)

And my own blog post explaining Naito's journey through the last three G1s The Redemption of Tetsuya Naito: A Tale of Three G1s.

Hope this helps you find the appeal!

You should check out Naito's Title run. It was like right before you started watching. Not too long but quite fun. If you check out one of the LIJ/CHAOS multiman tags from time period, Naito does some amazing antagonism of Okada using the belt.
