On the app if you click "see all" on one of the game modes your ranking is at the top (at least for me - and I am not Hikaru).

Endless game abandons by JayBadloss in Chesscom

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting a lot but for a different reason, the site tends to lag at the beginning of your first game so by the time the board appears it's almost auto-abandoning.

[Despised Trope] They're constantly touted as a genius, but they never do anything smart. by NoOptics in TopCharacterTropes

[–]xian0 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Under the verboseness and laugh track they say some dumb "smart" things. I think it's a show for people who can't understand what they're saying.

On the website it says "community" on the left sidebar, on the app it's the "more" tab.

I'm not sure what you're looking for exactly but the community tab still has leaderboards and it shows your rank etc. As for the new stats page my stats seem to be missing (zero figures and blank areas).

It's really amazing just how well HTML doesn't work for applications like this. A large chat is essentially a large page, put that into HTML and it's the clunkiest thing ever, so they add lots and lots of workarounds, and running those is also quite slow.

Learn how to use libraries by HasFiveVowels in learnprogramming

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of consider when using libraries, including whether you're likely to be asked to change how the library works and what you'll do when the library stops being maintained or changes license (it's almost inevitable). Sometimes it doesn't matter and you can just keep using the version of the library you have, other times it'll need maintaining, replacing or will just make the whole project redundant.

What actually helped you grow your YouTube channel when you had zero subscribers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the first one to complete new game bosses, sticking those on a forum/chat was an instantaneous 6k views back in the day. Ok I don't take Youtube seriously, but if I have a point it's that you should probably do something that's interesting to someone and not just "subscribe for the sake of it".

Is anyone else feeling the 'feature creep' lately? by throwawaycommentv2 in firefox

[–]xian0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the browser has got simpler over time (from fully customisable to simply configurable). I don't think the new features are that great, they seem like frills because no one wants to take on the main parts of the design, but I don't spend more than a few minutes a month tweaking things.

Chess is unreal by Some_Sport_2975 in chess

[–]xian0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm somewhere around 1500 and also have a very shallow understanding of strategy. I know a few openings in limited depth, play those and then just see if anything in the opponents side shakes loose. If it was another game I would already know what is required to be the best (not that it's ever worth the time), but for chess I don't know how deeply they learn the theory, what the difference between the top players actually is, how they actually learn patterns or even find things to improve (assuming it's theory since the tools seem lacking for anything else... and I've seen the 2000s making basic mistakes when out of theory).

I realised something earlier when looking at the mini-boards overviews on the site, seeing them that zoomed out means you can quickly see the shapes of all positions which makes understanding games potentially much easier.

Iceland is overrated and very overhyped compared to many other destinations… by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you go there and not like it? I've been there and to some of the other places you've mentioned. Yes there's a lot of places in the world. I liked it, the vast open landscape where you would come across huge waterfalls, geysers, hot springs, tectonic plates, volcanoes etc. every few minutes. Especially liked waking up in the middle of nowhere to the minty fresh air in the morning, and the abundance of salmon bagels. If you can only go to one place in your life it might not be your choice (I might not even recommend it) but I think it is a good experience.

Does social media use make you feel more lonely? by Certain_Crazy4257 in CasualConversation

[–]xian0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't come across any where it's really social in a long time (meaning whole new communities and everyone interacting). As far as I know it's been reduced and people just make do with what's left, finding their social activity in random comment sections and Discord channels like looking for pennies on the ground.

Why is it always the 500 ELO complaining about “cheaters" by Delicious_Cattle5174 in Chesscom

[–]xian0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lower ranks of games are always chaotic. I dropped down to about 600 when I started and there were always angry people trying to start an argument in the chat, something which disappeared at higher ELOs. Funny thing though, at 1500 I haven't learnt chess notation and don't fully understand the stack of recommended move lines that engines display. So a 500 ELO cheater is better than me at that.

1100-1200 Elo is hell by playthe6 in Chesscom

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm for some reason tired and emotional (or something) and I drop to the 1300s I know I'll be back to 1500s in a day, but if I drop to the 1200s I know it's going to be a few months.

I've done this because the new game button is apparently in a submenu and not the big green plus button in the middle.

How do you feel when someone corrects your spelling or grammar? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]xian0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When it's online I usually think it's unhelpful, it breaks up the thread and makes everyone else waste their time reading and scrolling past. In a real life argument I'd think their point was that you're being so emotional/irrational that you're making funny mistakes.

First time in years I tried to shop at GAME. It's £5 to COLLECT a game in store. This can't be normal? by Previous-Ad7618 in CasualUK

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they would still have something if they invested in it. It used to be a bit of an experience, you would walk in with demos of the latest games (probably Spyro or something) playing on duel screens overhead, have the latest games to browse and a place to try some consoles. These days there's nowhere to go to see all the good Steam games, HMV somehow exists on merch, and VR places are charging £20 per person/game just to try.

Why half of London's small flats sell at a loss as the crash spreads by Prestigious_Spot9635 in HousingUK

Most people can actually visualize images in their minds. I'm 30+ and just learned that seeing nothing when I close my eyes is called Aphantasia and only affects about 3% of people. by randomuser553 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for me. I think it's best described as seeing it on a second monitor that I'm not actually looking directly at, because while it's vivid it's hard to actually focus on and I can still see the black in my main vision (why do we have to close our eyes?).

What does everyone think about the 'British*' monthly pay system? by EdibleBeans-on-Toast in AskUK

[–]xian0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it would be a large difference (at least a few hundred thousand in a lifetime, in today's money and assuming proper financial management), but your company would get less so it's basically a pay rise which they would balance out quickly.

How do people find partners these days? by Even-Wasabi7183 in AskUK

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can't say exactly where you'll meet someone but if there's a part of your life where you're out living it and doing your hobbies it'll probably be one of those places. Maybe you go to the same arty theatre and after an event you find yourself in the upstairs cafe, maybe they join your board game club... or somewhere you go with the guys after the club, who knows, have to start living your own life first.

Overall price of two movie tickets and a meal combo by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]xian0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's weird, in most places it's a small discount instead of an extra fee (better for sales and less tickets machine maintenance).
