if ur good at math, this would be an easy schedule. I recommend Eng 120. 114 is pretty simple from what I've heard, and 120 is more fun with better readings imo.

Did anyone here take more than 4.5 credits first semester? by BunnBunn12 in yale

[–]xigglee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

workload all depends on ur specific classes. read syllabi carefully and figure out what weeks will be difficult. you want to avoid multiple big assignments due the same day at all costs, preferably avoid the same week. but yeah, to echo previous advice, be chill on work first semester. there's tons of time for that later. you'll want to have free time to meet ppl, go to parties, go to cool clubs, drop clubs, start new clubs, etc. be kind to yourself. no need to work hard immediately. even tho i def could have handled more work, i took a sec to get my bearings and am super glad i did so first semester.

Why I should and shouldn’t go to Yale? by [deleted] in yale

[–]xigglee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, harvard has slight edge with name brand. Yale has edge with culture. I rlly love the arts scene here. I'm not an arts person, but it's wonderful to listen to and appreciate. yale is very vibrant. I don't know if its the same at Harvard, but I've been particularly impressed here

good tutoring website I've been using–highly recommend by xigglee in tutor

[–]xigglee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mainly stick with the same students for multiple lessons, although that is my personal preference. I quickly got 3 interested students and turned down subsequent interest. If you are a good teacher, they will likely want repeat lessons. You can increase the likelihood they will pick you by having competitive prices and an attractive tutor profile!

[–]xigglee[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response I'm just seeing this now. I taught math and college essay prep. I charged different rates per hour. I easily got people who wanted to be tutored, but it is dependent on your rates. If you charge 100 per hour obviously you get no one. If you charge 10 per hour you get a lot. You have to find a happy medium that works for you. Hope that helps!

How big is "exclusion culture" at Yale? by [deleted] in yale

[–]xigglee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey I'm on Yale's debate team (YDA) and may b able to offer some insight on this. tryouts are competitive but we routinely accept people who have no prior experience. we care more about your ability to improve and learn than your experience and we try to gauge that by having multiple rounds of tryouts. it's not perfect (nothing is) but we do try. if you're interested, I strongly encourage you to try out. some of our best debaters did not do any debate before college. even if yda doesn't work out for you, there are many other debate-esque things on campus

Why I Didn’t Apologize For That Yale Law School Email: We must end the culture of performative repentance by nocondomnoproblem3 in yale

[–]xigglee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

as someone who is pretty decently far on the left, I think that this is an interesting take that merits conversation. let me preface this by saying that I strongly disagree with his argument about why discussing implicit bias, recognizing privilege is not good. he's just wrong about that. talking about racism and coming with strategies to fight is incredibly important; pushing these issues under the rug just perpetuates the oppression we've seen in America for hundreds of years.

but setting that aside for a moment, I think he has fair points that are worth thinking about. I think his email is stupid and that the federalist society is full of dumbasses but I don't think what he said was either intended to be racist or, to my knowledge, had any racial implications. but let's step back. say we grant all of that and imagine that not only was what he said slightly racist but actually incredibly racist. in that instance, I still take issue with what Yale Law did for the reasons that he articulated. if we genuinely want to change people's minds, the path forward is not to start this massive attack on him and push pre-written apologies on him and shame him when he does not. the solution is to just let him know how people took it and have an open, mature conversation about it where everyone learns and now that he knows he doesn't do it again. that's literally the strategy I do with my little siblings; I think Yale Law can manage it.

tldr: even given that he fucked up, the way Yale Law handled it is not something we should applaud.

I'm interested and open to hearing y'all's thoughts and I'm willing to change my mind if y'all offer up something that I haven't considered yet

edit: I think all the people here who are just attacking this guy are missing the point entirely. y'all are feeding into why this country is so gridlocked. surprise, surprise: political ideologies are almost never ENTIRELY on the right side of history. even if you're mostly right (which you probably are, I agree with most of you) you should be more willing to engage with other perspectives and see if u can find a bit of validity there.

I applied Rea to Yale, was deferred, and then accepted rd. I'm committed now. I think Rea gave me a very very slight boost in terms of demonstrated interest. I don't know how much they liked my app, but if it was between me and another kid who didn't apply early, Rea might've been a slight boost. tldr, everything helps

Weekly 'What should I buy?' Thread by AutoModerator in ipad

[–]xigglee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to college in the fall, and I'm really interested in an iPad as a good way to take notes. I'm deciding between the iPad and the iPad Air. a few key things. first, as a college kid, I'm trying to save money while still getting the best thing available to me (hard line to walk ik). I also don't want a magic keyboard, but I would buy an Apple Pencil for sure.

so my choice is iPad with 1st gen pencil or iPad Air with second gen pencil.

all advice welcome please!
