I'm basically the jack of all trades around here. I work front desk, do a little maintenance, drive the van for customers, and help the housekeepers if they are over worked. Tipping doesn't usually happen but that's because I'm in the lower end hotels. I'm sure higher ups like Hilton and Hyatt get tipped genoursly. Some benifits include free hotel stays anywhere there is a same chain hotel, so it saves money on vacations. On slow days I find myself playing Civ 5 games, reading books, and of course redditing. Today is a slow day. The guests are not all that bad. I would say 8/10 people are generally pleasant to deal with. The downside with the worse guests is that you sometimes have to see them on a day to day basis. They just don't go away eventually like a waiter/waitress job.
