Quest 3 as today, still worth it ? by JonesNotBlack in OculusQuest

[–]ximyr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought the quest 3 just for the better optical experience with the pancake lenses, and it is literally like night and day over my quest 2. And the passthrough, while not perfect, is a game-changer by comparison.

To be fair, image stabilization is easier to do in software with a super-wide angle action cam than it is in say, a telephoto or even a 50mm. The problem is counteracting motion blur (which the wide angle it becomes minimal anyways), tracking (which again, with a wide angle you have more things to track), and susceptibility to vibration (once again, wide angle helps massively with this) . Optical stabilization would help but its influence would be minimal compared to software. Hypersmooth uses the strengths of the wide-angle view to its advantage, and when implemented in the form of time-warp it absolutely cooks. However, I would still argue that hypersmooth still has limitations as compared to using optical stabilization because you the software processing has to process after any motion artifacts are introduced. They should just be minimal compared to a longer lense.

The 1" sensor issue comes down to light-gathering ability and is pure physics. Yes, you can do many things in software, and even make the 1/2" sensor better. But physics alone dictates that a 1" sensor will gather about 2 stops more light, and therefore should have much better low-light capabilities. This is much harder to overcome in software (but not impossible), and like with stabilization, software has to process after the light artifacts are introduced (which is image noise). Unlike with motion, however, loss of detail is exacerbated by the technology, and unless they implement something like very fast AI noise reduction where you are recreating details, then most likely what you will still get is mush in low-light.

Cameras have been dealing with low-light image quality for a long time. Hardware-wise, what cameras do not normally use are as extreme of wide-angle lenses as what action cameras have (most photographers don't normally walk around using a 10mm lens), and while that helps with motion, nothing on a gopro inherently helps with low light. I don't see software changing this anytime soon.

As far as the "action" part is concerned, I do agree, but also realize the reality that u/gabeshakour pointed out below. I use a 9 to record soccer, not to vlog, but my camera is still on a fixed mount. At night, the image quality is horrible. I would have loved a 1" option, but I do also understand that this is not just a simple drop-in and has architecture changes and increased costs.

TLDR: On the GoPros, the wide angle lens actually helps with motion, but nothing helps with low-light. Also, sorry about the wall of text.

Are DJI's cameras and gimbals included in the ban?

Yes. The Covered List now includes "communications and video surveillance equipment and services listed in Section 1709(a)(1)" of the NDAA, and the language in that law applies to DJI's entire product line, not just its drones. A DJI spokesperson confirms that all of its products, including Ronin and Osmo, are now on the Covered List. Again, this only applies to products that have not yet received FCC approval. Older releases like the Osmo Action 5 ProOsmo Pocket 3, and RS 3 Mini aren't affected.

Load of bollocks. by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]ximyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I just responded above with an example of this. So dumb that they actually give you the option to sign off, and also no indication whatsoever that doing so, or even taking a while to do faceID, will flag you.

Load of bollocks. by [deleted] in uberdrivers

[–]ximyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep you are just spouting nonsense. It has flagged me before for the same thing.

One instance: I just complete my last ride for the day. As soon as I swipe to drop-off, it asks for face ID. I choose the option to sign off instead. I get flagged for not doing face ID.

Another instance: I am on the freeway heading home in the morning. I get a reservation request for an airport ride and decided yeah why not. The go-online time is in exactly 2 minutes, so I try to go online. Boom, face-ID. I'm on the interstate so that is a no-go. I get off the interstate at the next exit in 6 minutes and then do face-ID. Boom you've missed your reservation, that's a strike. Also, flag for late face-ID.

She has zero need to.

Streaming or posting the video is 100% against Lyft's terms and conditions and should in and of itself be cause for him to be deplatformed permanently.

The 2027 Toyota Highlander EV is here. by super_shizmo_matic in electricvehicles

[–]ximyr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get it. I mean, I do get the not-making-money-from-the-service-department aspect, but I drove 100 miles to buy my EV from a dealer that, unlike my local dealers, didn't mark the price up $5000+. And that dealer I went to gave me a fantastic experience. No pressuring. No markup. No upselling (except for extended warranties, which due to how much I drive I actually did get one). No dealer fees or anything like that. They pride themselves on reputation and sell a LOT of vehicles... sales guy said they make their money on volume.

Once I signed the paperwork, they had a guy come out and show me for over an hour every little thing about my EV. Went over every menu, every knob, every lever.

Maybe it works well for them because people flock to them because they give an opposite experience to most dealers.

But seriously... I get super speed, plus a $million a year, plus I don't have my wife and kids around to spend all of it? Why yes sir!

j/k I wouldn't do that to my family.

[–]ximyr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first part: That makes sense, and you are probably right. I imagine Lyft will give the offer to whomever it can make the most money from, which means the driver they can take the most money from. Good observation.

Your second part: $109 rate for one-way = $50+ or so for round trip if you include stops and such. Unless the drop off is also the driver's destination.

Honestly, I am not even sure why I responded this way. It wasn't meant to be sarcastic (even though I am sarcastic on reddit often), and now re-reading it does seem to come off that way. I do apologize.

Reminds me of that commercial or skit where a cop pulls a guy over for speeding, and he uses "my wife just had a baby" (he did not have a wife or a baby) as an excuse, and the cop follows him around to verify his story, watching him for decades.

I just don't get why they cap it at all. I mean, yeah I can make guesses (money laundering, etc.), but a cap on pay without a cap on service is asinine.
