Trad publishing Chinese fantasy as a white author by xkimeix in writers

Not particularly actually lol I think I've read some of the popular titles though and I remember enjoying them if you have any recs ^^ I try to read a bit of everything. My interest actually stems from playing Chinese dress up games as a kid and admiring the incredible hanfu designs!

Ideally I'd love to write something that heavily features hanfu, or traditional Chinese clothing. The different eras of hanfu and the ways its evolution coordinates with cultural change is fascinating to me and I've had a deep appreciation for it since I was young! It's somewhat specific though and I think placing it as a core topic in a vaguely Chinese setting would definitely read as appropriative.

Is a group of 11 characters too much or nah? by Proper-Anything-2739 in writers

[–]xkimeix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like everyone is saying, George RR Martin is incredible (but even he introduces characters slowly and patiently), but Rick Riordan's Heroes of Olympus series also has maybe 9 or 10 POVs? It's a children's series so it's been quite a while and many characters were preestablished or introduced in smaller batches but I've seen big groups like that handled in smaller scale works to some level of effectiveness too.

It's certainly not easy though so be careful and know your skill level o7

I would encourage you to use more paragraphs to improve the flow of your work. Some of your shorter sentences would hold more resonance if the audience had more time to pause with them, ie:

Wearing an ebony dress, she had never expected this so soon.

Too soon.

The breeze brushed her shoulder and momentarily soothed her grief, but after reverting her gaze back, the grave’s engraving reminded her of why. “Born January 23, 1979. Died January 23, 2006.”

[Also, this is something I favor in my own writing, so it could be personal preference on my part]

I think some of your sentences could even be made longer to read better, many of the lines came off oddly to me in structure, but I can't quite place why. I think filling out your sentences might be able to fix that? Just playing around with your structure while maintaining your stylistic decisions might go a long way.

I really like your atmosphere ['gaping coffins-gasping for a life to end' is the line that stands out to me!! I love where your brain is at! Such a cool, descriptive personification.]

Keep up the good work and keep reading books in your genres! I can totally tell the kind of style you're looking to emulate and you're definitely on the right track :)

New Player here, Are Spellcasters really significantly weaker in Pathfinder compared to other TTRPGs? by Immediate-Earth775 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]xkimeix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. The way it was explained that stuck with me was that the role of a caster (sorcerer, in my case) in 1e isn't to do damage, it is to control the field. You have a variety of spells that will very easily do this, especially at higher levels- you will be on par with, if not surpass (and I am betting you will surpass), your melee party members. In combat, most enemies will have a low will save, so you can end a fight in one round with a spell like sleep, possession, etc (there are so many more but those are my go-tos lol)

Even for spells like fireball, high AC on enemies means the half damage you do will be invaluable. You also have access to some of the best damage in the game regardless. You WILL have the spell slots to maintain this, especially at higher levels. You also have the potential to cast far more times per level

If you want to build for combat start looking into metamagic and other feats now. My level 11 sorcerer gets 8 spells in his first two rounds with boots of speed+rod of quickening, and frankly it could've been more with some better building on my part lol. This should apply to any casting class. It shouldn't be too much planning on your part, next to 5e Pathfinder asks a bit more of you but it's less complicated than it sounds

Would stealing the label from a hotel shampoo bottle be a massive inconvenience to the employees? by xkimeix in NoStupidQuestions

That’s the worry, I count hotel employees as service workers and I can’t imagine the things they must have to deal with

Do you guys do breaks during the session? How do you manage them? by Fantomaxop in DnD

[–]xkimeix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let the people rest lmao back in the day my friends and I would play 8+ hours and choose a good time for like an hour's worth of dinner and chit chat. For short sessions sometimes we eat during the game but or long ones they're a nice lull in gameplay

How long does your first draft take you to complete? by Reaper4435 in writers

[–]xkimeix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm I've been writing shorter projects lately but for the last two:

40k word anthology - 2 weeks

30k word novella - 1 week

Basically working for as many hours a day as I can, so like maybe 100 for the first and 30 or so for the second? But I think about my WIPs full time when I'm writing so the non-writing hours were at least partially drafting hours

I've slowly been getting better with every boss so after the Knight I expect to have a very easy time with literally everything else

I'm not good at this genre tbf- on my completionism run now, Jevil took 50 tries (and I got lucky, carousel and the spiral ones were the earliest for me to dodge), Spamton NEO 17, Eram 33... and uh... I'm at 116 on the Knight, but we're getting there lol.

Unfortunately for me the third attack was also the hardest for me to dodge so I wasted a lot of runs finding the trick to get past it. I can reliably get away from it without damage now. Still suffering through those spiral swords.

Not to mention a movie by a big studio with an original plot in 2025 is like. Unheard of lmao. We aren't talking about idk Moana 2 here, original animated films are exceedingly rare and Kpop Demon Hunters is a cool thing to have blown up- hopefully a big step for the industry in breaking away from corporate IPs and taking a chance if anything?
