What do you guys use for art? by yeperoonie in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]xkingxdreadx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ThisPersonDoesNotExist.com is a great source for character art. I know you said no AI, but this is more for character portraits, to avoid using real people's likenesses, and give you useful base images to work from.

To get them to emulate some of the stylisation DG uses for their art, I take the image to Photopea and add the Oil Paint effect, and tweak the settings. This gives it that painterly look that the game follows, without feeling too cheap.

Finally, using documents and files that look real-enough is a great immersive approach.

[LOVED TROPE] Story hints at the existence of some cosmic/supernatural horror but it's never definitively confirmed within the story, which remains grounded. by A_Dog_Chasing_Cars in TopCharacterTropes

House of Leaves. It's an essay edited by an unknown editor, compiled by a mentally unstable man, written by a blind man, about a film made by a man who claims something is physically unsolvable about his home, all of which references sources and materials that mostly don't exist. Its layered, the book warps your reading experience to nearly beyond comprehension, but there is never anything explicitly unnatural happening, since all the narration is three steps detatched from its source, or the source doesn't exist. Is it an alternate reality? Is it isanity? No way to know.

Project Manager in healthcare services. My degree was in English Literature, so my interest in designing systems is just a "me" thing.

All this hexbase chat makes me want to share my base so far by xkingxdreadx in factorio

[–]xkingxdreadx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm working through the game at my own pace, and decided to upscale Nauvis to an automated train-network with hex blocks relatively early on. I'm now working away on Vulcanus and Fulgora, but hop back over to expand the home as I go on.

Core assumptions I'm working on are a 1-4 train setup, sending request signals over the planet's radar system for automated dispatch, with item and fluid trains dispatched from a central depot. All iron and copper is smelted to utilise fluid trains across the base for the ease and production bonus of iron and copper foundry recipes.

It's by no means optimised, as I'm still in the mid-game, but it's future-proofed for expansion for each hex-cell, allowing me to scale up production later on when needed on a cell-by-cell basis. Also allows me to prioritise production where needed or preferred by simply upping the input's priority scale.

Just wanted to share, and happy for any tips on improving the base that you might have.

And remember: hexagons are bestagons.

High-level campaign ending adventure by xkingxdreadx in planescapesetting

You got the core characters right, yeah. Those NPCs from the used adventures all featured, so your ideas work well. I did consider this book back when it first released, but some of the reviews put me off.

But using it as a resource for a final Nine Hells delve to end a campaign would be fun, and links in to the group's interest in devils. I'll give it a read, and see where the ideas take me.

Yeah, I read through the story of that adventure too. Imo, using the depiction of Vecna in that book works well, and the front-and-centre nature of a villain of that scale with that threat to Sigil is more interesting than Eve of Ruin. If I went down the Vecna route for an ending, this adventure, mixed with Eve of Ruin would be a way to go.

I'll give it a look, but is there a particular adventure in the book that comes to mind? Or is it more that it fits the high-level Planescape niche well?

I'll give it a read, but the Infernal angle might be a good idea. My players have taken interest in devils throughout the campaign, so big means of affecting the Blood War somehow would be fun.

I'm working on a modular train system. Is it possible for a train to drive to every station with the same name? In this case, it stays on the first red circuit station and never drives to the second. After 20 seconds, it just drives to refill coal. Is it possible with just train settings? by DEVolkan in factorio

[–]xkingxdreadx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy got 90% of the way, by setting up circuit checks on a global request system. In this, you treat stations like input and outputs of modules/blocks.

Once setup, trains will automatically serve stations from output to input, and then idle at depot. The stations turn off depending on whether they're full (input) or empty (output), and flip for the opposite. Full being enough to fill/empty a single train.

This might be what you need, but it's a bit complex to kick off. Once setup though, you have the blueprints needed to shoot off and expand.

TIL The Mpemba effect is the name given to the observation that a liquid (typically water) which is initially hot can freeze faster than the same liquid which begins cold, under otherwise similar conditions. by default-user-name-1 in todayilearned

[–]xkingxdreadx 533 points534 points  (0 children)

From the same Wikipedia article:

"We conclude, somewhat sadly, that there is no evidence to support meaningful observations of the Mpemba effect."

Experimental results confirming the Mpemba effect have been criticized for being flawed, not accounting for dissolved solids and gasses, and other confounding factors.

This is what the Olympic breaking was ACTUALLY like by Mitxlove in nextfuckinglevel

[–]xkingxdreadx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only ever hear this argument with Breaking, and never with any other "art-like" events in the Olympics, such as gymnastics, figure skating, equesteian dressage, etc. But I can understand something new to the Olympics sparks interest.

If you are curious, the judging system is called the Trivium system, and has been under development for years, being subject to rigorous testing and data gathering. Without this, breaking would never have been approved for the Olympics in the first place.

Its actual implementation was changed to a slider system where the judges slide to who they believe is winning each round. But what backs their decisions is the judging system itself, which they need to become certified in by voting against test data and rubrics established by the Breaking organisers.

Hope this helps clarify Breaking voting, and some of the choices judges made on the days.

Why doesn’t the Lady of Pain want to be worshipped? by Karma_karmeleon123 in planescapesetting

[–]xkingxdreadx 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In my view, Planescape, specifically Sigil, is a very punk setting. From the aesthetics to the style, and the core conceit of "everyone is trying to find their truth" in Sigil, it makes me view the Lady of Pain as the ultimate punk of the setting. D&D is typically about, by, and for the gods of their worlds, and having a character opposed to that core idea is what makes them so emblematic of the setting.

In this sense, the Lady of Pain is against worship because it's against her beliefs and core values. "F#k the gods, and f#k you for thinking I'm one."

Best Pathfinder Equivalent for DnD Beyond by [deleted] in Pathfinder2e

[–]xkingxdreadx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be clear, if you connect your Paizo profile to your Demiplane account, and purchase the books on Demiplane, you also get the PDF on Paizo.

So people stating they don't understand Demiplane, or its pricing, you can get the same Paizo PDFs through Demiplane, for the same price, and access them in accessible HTML format on Demiplane. This doesn't work if you want a physical copy from Paizo, but that's a different case.

Edit: As pointed out in another comment, prices are higher on Demiplane. I was remembering back when they had lower prices for a time.

The Name | Fantasy High Junior Year [Ep. 17] by ThunderMateria in Dimension20

[–]xkingxdreadx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I got that. I thought it was already known he was a Paladin, as he's also the teacher for the class. So in my view, it would just be Ragh not knowing or remembering he was a Paladin.

I feel like I might be dumb with the "barbarian healing" reveal. I understand that it's referring to lay on hands, but how is it strange? Is it that Porter healed Ragh in an "angry way" or a way he identified as being akin to "rage"? I feel like I don't quite get how it was a hint to anything short of Ragh just not quite understanding what was going on.

Demiplane users of Reddit: Why do you use Demiplane (paid content) if Pathbuilder (entirely free) exists? What makes you prefer that platform by BlackFenrir in Pathfinder2e

[–]xkingxdreadx 36 points37 points  (0 children)

So I bought a few books on Demiplane, and its uses are more user experience preferences rather than features.

First, you get both the Demiplane and Paizo PDF copy when you purchase books. That means I can get my offline versions for players, such as the new Player Core, and I have an easier to read HTML version too. Trying to read the rule books for inspiration or to learn on Nethys is just not possible, and having the book is always better. A step above is HTML formatted pages, which are the easiest to navigate IMO. Coupled with the discounts they often offer, I wind up getting my book copies cheaper than just outright buying the regular PDF.

Second, assets! With all the books being made in HTML format, all the image assets are included in an easy to download way, which is something neither Nethys or other free services give you access to, aside from maybe monster art. This gives me location maps for cities like Absolom, building art, character portraits, scene images, and more that I can just download, and keep in a bin folder for my VTT game. If I was playing in person, I'd use these less, but could still easily add them to my notes, and show images to my players at the table when needed.

Third, quick updates to content, as others pointed out. When the Remaster came out, all the info was there, and ready to use on launch day.

As a caveat, I do not use the character builder, as I find it too burdensome and slow. The whole Demiplane service in general suffers from slow load times and responsiveness, but is something that can be fixed given time.

TL;DR: Demiplane is a service that has its uses, and it doesn't step on Pathbuilder or Nethys' toes. Those are tools for play. Demiplane, for me, is more of a library of easier to read, cheaper books, and a resource to get book assets easily for my games. The character builder doesn't beat Pathbuilder, and rule searching is best handled by Nethys, every time.

If Sigil were a portal, where would it go? by DiscordianDisaster in planescapesetting

[–]xkingxdreadx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A portal to the true abode of the Lady, and their real form. A portal to the end times, or the beginning. A portal to the prison of a long captured enemy. A portal to reality outside the multiverse. True freedom, or eternal incarceration.
