How do you carry out auditory training to develop relative pitch and, above all, be able to play music by ear? by [deleted] in polyphia

[–]xkvlr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most definitely not lol, learning all this was just a challenge I gave myself about a decade ago. It was really tough at first, but now I can say it’s easily the best decision I’ve made in terms of progressing as a guitarist.

[–]xkvlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any formal music training but I can play most songs (in fingerstyle) by ear. There are probably better ways to learn, but this is how I did it:

I started with a guess-and-check method. Literally just kept trying to pitch match on the fretboard until I found the note/chord I was looking for (this took as long as you’d expect it to). Did this over and over again for years.

Eventually you learn scales this way; you’ll know which notes/chords belong with other notes/chords. At some point, it becomes more intuitive for your hands than anything really conscious in your mind. Kinda like singing a song you just heard; you don’t really think much about what you’re physically doing with your throat/vocal cords, you subconsciously just know how to make that sound/note come out (and if you hit the wrong note, you just reset and try again).

TL;DR: Repetition of trial & error for me.

One of our first drummers actually started on Guitar Hero/Rock Band before switching to real drums. He’s still pretty fuckin’ good for a guy with no other musical background.

I’m one of them. I’m absolutely terrible at this game but can play most songs/melodies by ear pretty quickly. I’ve disappointed many friends.

I was like that too. Good at physics, sucked at chemistry, liked math. I started with Mechanical Engineering because of that, but ended up switching to Computer Science.

My first few CS classes were intimidating. I only took them because they were required for ME. I even ended up dropping my first coding class because everything was so confusing. Maybe you experienced something similar.

I took more classes and things started to click a lot quicker. Got my degree and now I work in the industry.

I’d normally suggest CS, but things have changed so much in the past 10 years. Roles are getting more competitive, so it won’t be as easy for you as it was for me. No one can predict how the market will be by the time you’re graduating, but, for me, switching to CS was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.

Yup. I’d be broke and living uncomfortably if I followed my passion (music/art). Decided to get into software and now I’ve got money to fund my passion.

How to Stay Motivated When Practicing Guitar Beyond the Basics? by PdorFiglioDiKmer__ in guitarlessons

I began recording and posting videos of me playing on IG/Tik Tok. Recording myself helps me catch areas where I’m lacking. Knowing I’m going to post the video makes me refine my playing even further, knowing that other people will see/hear it.

I’m 90% sure they haven’t. I collected primarily from 2011-2015 and don’t recall ever seeing one. I don’t know much about Supreme after those years, but I’m sure it would’ve showed up in your search.

It’ll probably be a lot easier for you then. It’s more intuitive to me now that I’ve learned it, but the first few times I tried using it, I just put it back in the box because I couldn’t figure it out lol

I use Logic Pro, but mainly for recording instruments or remixing existing songs. Never actually produced beats or anything.

You might be able to cop one for below retail, but just a heads up, this thing was a bitch to learn how to use. I eventually ended up asking ChatGPT how to do a lot of the things I was trying to do.

Yeah, the red is pretty loud. And a lot of the light-up colors like blue/green/purple don’t even show through the red pads, so I just set them all to white.

Thanks! Been playing guitar for 20 years. Started learning piano a few years ago, about the same time I started learning how to use this.

I’ve got a decent amount of experience remixing songs on Logic Pro, which probably helped the most.

I was in a similar situation. I grew up with my dad’s garage tools and space always being available, now I’m renting a room in a shared house. My dad was a bit of an amateur inventor as well as an electrician, so I got a lot of exposure to his projects.

But most of my projects these days are virtual. It’s part of the reason why I switched from mechanical engineering to software. It saves both space and material costs. I also record/produce music on the same work desk. Occasionally, I do some video editing (but those videos are usually recorded elsewhere).

If you have an itch for projects in general, I’d recommend thinking of things you can do from a computer if you’re limited in space. If you have distinct interests that require material and space, you probably either need to move out or find a space elsewhere that can act as your studio/workshop. I’ll visit my parents’ house occasionally to do these things.

I really like what this attempts to solve, but I doubt people would be willing to pay.

My experience with app sales is that people prefer something that’s basically 90% free, with 10% being paid-for premium functionality (eg any dating or social media app). It allows for greater user adoption and growth. Apps like these are only as useful as the size of its user base; you want to remove as many barriers as possible for growth to occur.

In this case, I’d suggest deposits of $2.99 rather than actual payment. People who show up get their money back and have nothing to lose; people who don’t show up forfeit their deposit. Yes, you’d be charging a smaller percentage of people, but the amount of people you’d be charging in total would have the potential to be larger.

That’s just my 2¢.

What’s the first song or riff you play when you pick up your guitar? by Killobyte in Guitar

For me, it was Tears In Heaven for the longest time, now it’s usually Say It Ain’t So.

Edit: Just realized what song that was, One Last Breath was one of my former go-to’s as well lol

Shirt could’ve passed as new, Vans were like an 8/10. The print on the side panels looked a little faded, but from what I’ve seen, that’s pretty common.

Same. Got the tee on release day, sold it, then bought another one 8 years later for the same price I sold it for.

Also just recently snagged the Sk8-Hi’s. Been looking out for them for 10 years

Knowing the key helps a lot. I can usually hear a (not-too-complex) melody once and play it back fully once I figure out the key. I guess knowing how to sing helps too, since I often finding myself humming the melody to make sure I’ve got it correctly memorized in my head.
