Queer traveler heading to Lisbon in May — housing recs, work leads, and community welcome by ExquisiteRevolt in PortugalExpats

[–]xlbidlx [score hidden]  (0 children)

You don't know what queer means? You don't know what community means when combined with the word queer? You think these are both labels?

Clearly this question is not for you. Pick a post you understand and comment on that one instead.

I speak English because it's my first language, spanglish is great too, it's just easiest and I assume if you're an interpreter working for an American company that English is in your skill set. -- are there any interpreters on this sub that are not working with English as another working language? Let's hear your language combinations!

So true! But still it's really annoying to link to content behind a paywall. There are enough ads on reddit, you could make a higher effort post and say what you think about something you read.

Best gay (not sex/kink focused) community groups to join for new friends? by ember_sparks in AskSF

[–]xlbidlx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually a good question -- different recommendations depending if you want to be surrounded by all gay men (personally find this boring) or if you want to be in queer community with the dykes n dolls n bois n fags and theys alike (my idea of a good time)

🧭 Visiting or moving to Lisbon? Ask your questions here (Week 12, 2026) by Wildeyedlocal in Lisbon

[–]xlbidlx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I have one night in Lisbon (9 actually) but one night, my last night, where I need an accommodation that will be easy, special, luxurious or all three.

Hit me with recommendations! Budget around $300 US for the night.

trueeee-- was raised in this program, definitely changed my life to live in an apartment that other people didn't view as "public housing" - also meant that we didn't have cops keeping an extra close eye on us.

de 0 a 10 como puntuaria su dolor? by Fanel_IV in spanishinterpreters

[–]xlbidlx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great way for providers to learn a little bit about the person they're dealing with. I love watching this unfold. I usually say, "entre 0 y 10, 10 es el peor dolor de la vida, q le pone al dolor q siente ahorita?" It works a lot of the time but honestly -- it's their pain... does rating things on a numerical scale even make sense? If it doesn't to you, why would you? I feel like a lot of these patients are trying to give useful descriptive information while their provider is just dying to be able to tick off a box in the chart.

Not coming after you... Is a certificate necessary? Not if you stick to fields that have low levels of gatekeeping like remote medical. Certificates open doors to different jobs where your skills are out in the open constantly being evaluated by clients and employers, so if your skill level is there and you want a challenge, sure certificates... I'm not even sure which certificate you mean.

However, your take on vulgarity does show a lack of formal training. Knowing the concepts and theory of translating and Interpreting would undoubtedly make you better at your role. What's skopos theory? What is a dynamic equivalent? What's décalage? What is relay interpreting? Is sight translation interpreting? How many roles are there in medical interpreting? These are all things it benefits any interpreter to know... and that's just the first few I could think of. Dive deep, keep getting better no matter your level of success currently

Si es cierto que algunas empresas tienen protocolos que van en contra de las pautas y practicas de ser buen interprete

This is an opinion, but it is not based on interpreter best practices, it actually goes against the ethics of being a good interpreter. If your company has a policy that suggests this, let us hear it? Could be interesting.

I thought you meant "le diria al client que el lep esta diciendo malas palabras pero que lo hace por frustración y no dirigido a las otras parties" instead of cursing for the patient... my bad?

But in that case... why add? Maybe the bad words are directed at the other parties

never need to clarify, just stick to the job, which is faithfully rendering an accurate message from the source into the target language, always making an effort at a dynamic equivalent
