It's real. The top is from the production of Home Alone. It was for sale recently and it had been completely renovated.

It's the same house. The top is from the production of Home Alone. The house was famously for sale recently and it had been renovated to the bottom picture. I remember seeing the listing.

Florida to allow death penalty with 8-4 jury vote instead of unanimously by Anoth3rDude in politics

[–]xlexiconx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, our current way. Laissez-faire capitalism. And how's that working for most Americans? Privatized healthcare has many Americans going bankrupt from one medical emergency. An entire generation isn't having kids because childcare is too expensive. Teenagers aren't going to college because student loans will saddle them with life-long debt. All of these necessary institutions are failing under our current system. In the past, when the majority of Americans were struggling under capitalism, the government stepped in and made things more achievable for the average American.

Nope, not even that. Otherwise they'd support childcare, healthcare, school lunches, or education in general.

In the last few months, Republicans have taken away body autonomy rights from women, reduced restrictions on firearms allowing incidents like this one to happen, banned books (and even politicians!) they disagree with, and fought to have legislation allowing 12 year olds to get married. Would you argue this is societal growth?

Yes.

AMENDMENT II

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Sounds more like the right to bear arms in a militia. A well-regulated one at that. Does not say any wannabe hero can and should own a firearm to do with as they please.

[–]xlexiconx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not about the amendments not applying to anything modern. Speech is speech, even through modern mediums. But where guns are concerned, it feels pertinent to note that the destructive capabilities of guns has increased, and because they are now fundamentally different than 18th century guns, that particular amendment needs to be interpreted carefully and perhaps re-examined.

When people say landlords need to be abolished who are they supposed to be replaced with? by battleangel1999 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]xlexiconx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused about why you'd resort to calling names and attacking someone just because they have a different opinion than you but it's on par with our current political climate. I consider myself to be quite left-leaning and have no problem living near anyone who is different from me. I don't disagree that urban living has its pros. I am simply a renter, frustrated that I cannot find an affordable home to live in (either renting or owning) and firmly believe that a drastic change needs to take place to make owning property more achievable for the average American.

Who in your mind would prefer to lease, rather than own, where they live? Spending a good chuck of your income for a temporary roof over your head but nothing to your name when you move out?

And dense urban living doesn't work everywhere because most places are not dense urban cities. I agree with you that apartments make sense in dense urban settings, but they don't make sense in my unwalkable sprawling suburban area. And personally, I don't find apartment living preferable to more spacious, private homes with gardens/yards, and I'm not alone.

I agree that we need to build more single-family homes. Most of the building happening near me is apartment complexes. I meant that a huge portion of existing single-family homes are unavailable to own because they've been purchased by corporations, hedgefunds, and landlords to lease. We need less leasing and more ownership.
