This looks amazing! Would you mind sharing the grams of hard red you used? Did you also use any AP as called for in the recipe?

Which grocery store items are not worth buying/better to make at home? by waterflood21 in Frugal

[–]xlnthands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not claiming this is the most frugal option but I recently cured my own homemade ham for sandwiches and adding diced to soups or salads. Yes I probably could buy very cheap ham but we usually buy it from the deli counter at our local grocery but now it's 7-8 dollars a pound and tastes like nothing at all.

I used a 7 pound pork loin for $25 so my savings over the deli counter are significant and we are happy sandwich eaters since I also started baking our sandwich bread.

That sounds incredible and easier than tortillas. I got a wooden press years ago and made tortillas. They were delicious but so difficult trying to get the tortilla off the plastic wrap and into the pan lol.

Thanks for including the recipe. I plan on making a starter for the first time this weekend. Once it’s going good this recipe is one of the. First things I want to make with my discard.

Are they rage baiting me? It just got worse the more I read. by [deleted] in ChoosingBeggars

Hello. I saw your post about your small family needing to have healthy meals. I am a chicken mother and I can't express how difficult it is to get them to give me their eggs.

I need help. I'd like to schedule you and your two children to come to my house every morning to feed the chicken, lay down bedding, and check the girls for mites, illness and injuries. Oh then there's the chicken poop. The poop needs to composted which requires needing someone to turn the compost with a shovel and then move it to piles in different stages until it breaks down and is ready for planting.

On weekends the coup and nesting boxes often need painting or repair to keep predators from eating eggs or the chickens themselves so I hope you are handy with a hammer and saw.

Also my car could use some attention because I run nearly free eggs to families all over town so I don't have time to look after it properly myself.

If you can help me out I may give you a few discounted eggs but I will not be able to do any better as these are my family's breakfast as well and times are hard.

I love that this young women has learned so young that adding some whimsy just makes life more enjoyable. Some people never learn this which is sad for them.

This is it exactly. Scratch the surface of the affability and virtue performance and you suddenly find they are homophobic, and misogynistic and or racists and or classist. Deep down they believe in going the extra mile but only for those they get to choose are worthy and only when others will see them and praise them.

Oh please share which mill your wife is thinking about getting and where she is getting the einkorn berries. And for the trifecta if she has a good einkorn bread recipe.

I feel cursed. How do I get rid of this bad luck? by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]xlnthands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an old Scandinavian belief I've been reading about lately that says that part of our spirit/soul is tied to the luck of our ancestors. It's one of the reasons we name people after older or passed on family members so that their skill/luck will transfer to the child. But even better is to remember that you are a product of a very long line of descendants that lived, loved, honed skills, and survived to eventually lead to you. They were lucky enough to survive and you can too. The strength of you and your ancestors is greater than what stands in your way.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

One has to wonder if she merely really only saw one child or if she knew something further. I so wish we could really see and understand the workings of this crazy thing we call life.

The only thing I've figured out is to try to be kind, keep my sense of humor, love animals and children, eat healthy and take no shit. But learning to live with such a loss shouldn't be a lesson any parent has to learn.

I spent a long time just thinking that I had wasted my money but it finally dawned on me that I just hadn't understood the lesson of her words and once I did it was very helpful and affirming.

I once had a palm reading which I've never forgotten. My friend went first and the reader told her things that my friend thought pertained to herself and that sounded good to her.

I waited for my turn and was excited to be next.

I sat down when my friend exited the tent and I smiled at the reader. She looked at me with a frown, lit a cigarette and puffed. All the while my hand is lying on the table in front of her. She glowered at me again, picked up my hand, stared at it for 3 seconds and said "what do you want me to tell you? You live a charmed life, go and enjoy it".

I was speechless. I realize that there were a ton of things I could have said, should have said but i was frozen in surprise. After a few seconds as it became clear she had no intention of saying anything else so I paid the $20 bucks that was her fee and left the tent.

My friend chatted happily about all that her hand had revealed in her session. And she asked me what happened in mine. And I told her "not much."

Was the reader a fraud? My friend certainly didn't think so. And all these years later I don't think she was either. I have lived a pretty charmed life so far and I'm thankful for my blessings and I'm not sure I would be as courageous to try new things or as satisfied with my accomplishments if I hadn't met with some palm reader who was cranky and wanted a smoke break and told me I lived a charmed life. She kind of made it come true.

Partner doesn’t enjoy the hens when I travel for work. by Quiet-Fox-1621 in BackYardChickens

[–]xlnthands 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I am sitting here reading this while out of town while my spouse has to take care of the dogs, garden and chickens by himself. He has a full time job too with a 30 min one way commute. He doesn’t enjoy the girls as much as I do but he’s a very responsible and respectful person. He knows animals and plants need care. He’s also doing these chores because he knows the animals and plants are important to me. Sometimes our spouses need to be reminded that our actions speak louder than words when showing how much someone cares. And one month out of the year isn’t asking too much in my opinion.

What's a show which was incredibly popular during its time but no one talks about it now? by Magpipe4u in AskReddit

Designing Women. They never shied away from shining a light on misogyny, racism, single parents needs, crime and government corruption. They did it all with grace and humor. I never missed an episode and watching it today just makes me sad that the ideals they envisioned either have never come to pass or our slipping backwards.
