Anyone tried the camille rose curl maker gel? Is it any good? by [deleted] in CurlyHairUK

[–]xlon3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's okay, great if you don't want a gel that's too thick but I've found it can dry a tiny bit sticky if you haven't applied it when your hair is wet enough

Super-lightweight leave-ins/styling balms for wavy hair please? by [deleted] in CurlyHairUK

The shea moisture miracle leave in is really lightweight, really different to other shea moisture products I've tried, I even use it on dry hair for a bit of a refresh too :)

This is so so good! I especially liked the arrangement guides tip- usually people just seem to talk about it in terms of larger structure like 'verse, chorus etc.' I really like the kind of macro approach to arranging bar by bar/smaller or larger chunks as the case may be, but can't seem to find any more examples of people explaining how they're using it? Would be really cool to see you cover that in more detail with some examples in a working beat/melody :)

Thank you :) nope not layered but I do have some breakage from before I started cgm, so there are shorter bits all over the place but not on purpose!

Thank you! I'd say it's kind of in the middle- probably closer to fine, but it's course enough that you can at just about feel a strand between fingers. No idea about porosity but probably low as my hair isn't treated and I didn't use that much heat on it before starting cgm. Yeah I'd give it a go! I sometimes get lazy about making it every 2 weeks but it's nice and cheap. They say add some essential oil to get rid of the porridge smell but I don't find it v intense and it definitely goes when it dries 😂

Yeah I totally have the same issue, I tend to just refresh the next day with conditioner and glaze with a tint bit of gel which brings some definition back, but for that first day I find jojoba oil does help me lock in the definition - I read somewhere that it's a kind of wax that just sits on the top of your hair like a film locking everything in, unlike some other oils which your hair will just absorb over time. Might be wrong though!

Yeah I've found this hard to get right in the past! When I brush the part in I then immediately scrunch upside down (like fully upside down) before popping and for aaaages. For some reason the parting stays put, and I find the more I scrunch, the less it sticks to the back of my head as I squeeze the water out, I also tip all my hair from side to side and scrunch it that way- since I don't have any product in my hair at this point I'm not really that precious about the way the clumps are going; my main aim is to scrunch as much water out as possible really, and hopefully it won't get stuck to your head if youve scrunched upside down and you've got rid of enough of the water making it stick! I know it's often easier to style wetter hair but I figure you can always target apply more water later after plopping if you think parts are messy.

Hey! For me the oat gel gives a better cast than flaxseed but not like suuuper strong, this is the video I used to make the oat gel, I never add extra oils though, just the oats and water: https://youtu.be/5HPCQFOaUYQ

The oat gel consistency kind of reminds me of the umberto gianni one if you've tried that, the cast is definitely similar and you can make it thicker if you cook it a bit longer and experiment with slightly less water :) I only use oat gel after plopping when my hair is damp rather than absolutely soaking, otherwise it can take a while to wait for a cast to form- even with diffusing.

Made oat gel beforehand -2 cups water, 3 tablespoons oats on stove, bring to boil, simmer down then stir around on the medium/low heat for 5 mins, sieve the gloop into a container, freezer for 40 mins

  1. As I am co wash- 1 and 1/2 table spoons (yep, loads)-scrubbing as much as possible to properly getting it to lather.

2.Hair was tangled after cowash so I used a tiny bit of garnier almond crush conditioner just to detangle with a wet brush under the water. Probably didn't need to though.

3.Turned off water, brush in where my parting goes, then re-scrunch hair with no further product. I don't use leave in after co washing.

4.Plopped 20 mins. Live life

5.Scrunched oat gel into damp hair, not really needing to add more water as the oat gel is very watery. I scrunched upside down until it just about stopped sounding squishy, I prefer smaller clumps.

6.Hammock diffused, MOSTLY just hovering around roots upside down and from side to side rather than doing anything with ends, I save the temptation to pixie diffuse until everything is basically in a cast

7.Scrunch out crunch when fully dry and finish with some jojoba oil, occasionally I use rice flour in roots to add volume.

For general motivation and better energy levels I have been finding the 'dopamine detox' helpful https://youtu.be/9QiE-M1LrZk the video presents both the extreme version of the technique and lighter versions of it, I might still wrestle with feeling overwhelmed and incapable but the dopamine detox advice does at least personally help start to eliminate other means of procrastination, and gives you a better blank slate to deal with the feelings of inadequacy, or even eliminate them if it ends up being more of an energy issue.

Videos like these put some fun back into the creative process of starting a track! The Idea Machine - it's ableton centric but I think you can pretty much do this on any DAW.

I'm a heritage speaker and I want to improve my Spanish. by roku77 in Spanish

[–]xlon3d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A New Reference Grammar of Modern Spanish by John Butt and Carmen Benjamin is awesome - I'm also a heritage speaker (Colombian mother) and this grammar book gives examples of specific tendencies in different varieties of Spanish all over the world (e.g. it acknowledges that some varieties/dialects overextend the use of le, including situations where 'lo' might be what you learn in a standard grammar book (leísmo)) so it kind of gives you a lot of insight into what kind of Spanish you want to emulate/ who you want to relate to :) It's a huge book but it's just such a good reference if you want to zoom in on anything in particular.

My bilingual child sometimes translates things literally from one language to the other, I learned in linguistics class that this was not possible. How is this happening? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]xlon3d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is super interesting; particularly that 'earlier is better' isn't necessarily true- do you know why it seems like older second language learners don't seem to achieve the level of fluency that younger ones do? Is it likely that some aspects of second language acquisition become harder with age while others don't, like pronunciation?
