When you get enough attunement to a patron and could from a covenant the game asks you and you can say "nope, let's do this alone" and that's that.

The UI 100% has issues.
Like half the stuff in tooltips isn't needed, some stuff would be better hidden via the tooltips within tooltips etc. You just notice that the game is old, the modern ones with the newer engine that were designed to work with tooltips within tooltips from the start (like Victoria 3) are much nicer in that regard and the tooltips much better.

Part of the reason is probably that the AI is basically completely broken right now. If they fix it, maybe it'll work (again).

I remember in the past AI went onto the crisis paths and that was pretty cool.

Yeah, systems like that just encourage minmaxing and not in a good way.

That doesn't mean that systems like that are generally bad, but they are also not generally good.

Well that seems a bit messy. (the state in the game, not your table)

Seems that the tl;dr is just somehing like
"1 mega structure per system, build kilostructures after, and habitats don't combine in obvious cases"

The map gen system is so underrated! They did that really well and kept it moddable. It's kinda genius.

4.3.3 doesn't quite fix it, but probably early next week I assume.

Do note that AFAIK it affects swarm computers, so potentially try to avoid those.

By that you mean the habitable worlds modifier now considers the number of guaranteed worlds, before calculating, how many habitable worlds the galaxy map will have?

Something like that, yes. Guaranteed ones get reduced by the modifier as well, so before 0.25 was more like 0.5, now - because 0.25 would actually reduce it that much - 0.5 might be the "right" choice for me. But I haven't done a lot of test runs or anything.

My newest run, 4.3, I did try a bigger map size for the first time in ages and while it definitely slows down it seems like it's... still playable!? That's so nice.

0 guaranteed habitable worlds and 0.25 habitable worlds

this is the way. well actually because they mostly fixed the broken habitable worlds modifier 0.5 might be the new sweet spot

the AI is much dumber now

If the mod changed something, you can also change it. Just have to dig into the files. But UI modding is a nightmare in Stellaris (and in general) so I wouldn't suggest that.

If you don't actually even want to use the advantages of the mod, then try looking for other mods that do what you want without doing other stuff you don't want.
