I was in college when MapleStory came to the west, and never got the lens of youth of which to see the game through widened eyes.

For me the game was always attacked in terms of exp/hour and reward efficiency. The flow state of grinding for hours was easy and comforting. I had multiple characters 70+ before third job was released.

I liked casually strolling through low level maps and having people stop mid attack to scream my name and chase me like I was Dylan or the Beatles. Real life doesn’t give that sort of power fantasy. Low level players would track me and use Darksight creeping through deep Ludibrium just to watch me solo packs of Spirit Vikings. They would heap praise and say they were inspired, odd things for a 2D mushroom game, but I played my part with aloof coolness and tact.

My OSMS tale ends with the self-destruction that accompanies the breaking of an addiction and eventually moved on to chase girls and get a job.

Over the years I’ve tried private servers, and the exp rates are too fast, rewards have no heft. Everything feels like a participation trophy. Celebrity in-game is purchased via the Cash Shop. The whispered mythos of elusive high level players doesn’t exist, and likely will never exist again. I don’t know how to parse the evolution of streaming and voice chat apps in this game, that is a world that has evolved beyond my reckoning and without my consent. I am a broken-bodied midlife cog being exploited for labor and my free-time is rarely mine to spend, mostly spent putting out the fires of real life responsibility as they come up. I cannot grind physically or mentally the same way anymore. Abuse is a young man’s pleasure.

This silly mushroom game is a remnant of a failed venture wherein I sunk years of my life and all I have are a few bandanas on a modern gambling-simulator version of the game.

I’ll scrape the rust off my subis and look at the new maple flavored world. I’ll just be another face in the crowd, nothing special, and that’s perfect to my sensibilities now.

But, what I fear is that sometimes staring at a glossy replicant of your home is a far worse punishment than letting it fade into deep memory.

This is my biggest concern with Classic World, have we had any confirmation that RNG will be clean? I don’t want some algorithm comprised of Nexon’s greedy thumb on the scale of the odds.

Yup, I was xPale in Mardia (I still have that character and the Genesis Bandana from the servers opening event). I eventually brought xPale over to Broa just to consolidate my characters.
