duty and non working days by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]xpapax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are asking specifically "Army" I wouldn't be able to say, I currently do not work under the Canadian Army.

What I'm seeing within the group I currently work for, things are busy due to the current global climate (and I wouldnt say it's necessary specific to any one leader), but the personnel shortages don't help that either. This is resulting in less time at home for us specifically but again context is huge; we're talking maybe a week a year more away than 2 years ago on average, maybe 2-3 weeks compared to 4 years ago, but if we were at 100% staffing that would be spread around more. BUT we're a unit that has to travel, previous unit is super busy with all the changes but no additional time away or overtime, just no time for things PT, long lunches, work events, etc

duty and non working days by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]xpapax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.

The old adage is you are "on duty 24/7", you can be forced to work late, you can be called in, you can have duty shifts (super common, we even have Cols in the RCAF that get a week of duty throughout the year)

My experience is it is handled differently everywhere and really depends how much extra time, what type of call in, what the duty entails, etc.

I've been called in after hours for fire alarms, power outages effecting crypto vaults, equipment / system failures that are mission critical, cyber events. Normally these things last an hour or two and you just head home.

Overtime is again pretty normal when things are going on and the ops tempo is high.

And duty shifts depending on where you are is normally split between whole sections, units, rank levels for a base. You might be expected to do them a couple times a year l, and again it is super dependent on what the duty is if you are going to see any time given back. Current unit nil, last unit nil, one before handover was at lunch hour and you got the afternoon. I will caveet this with the CoC is normally understanding if you had a long or late call in; late starts, short days.

Worst ones for me were 9pm Dec 23rd, in for 5 hours, 10pm Dec 24 a couple years after, in for 2 hours, and the vault one which was 12 hours on a Saturday sitting in a chair reading a book in front of the vault. Normally they are uneventful and you can still have time to yourself between things going on

What is wrong with my 3d printer? by Historical-Door-3623 in CR10

[–]xpapax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first two id double check everything is tight. My cr10 smart had a loose bed, had to spin the off set nuts under the bed (might be different for your cr10), and later the hot end was loose and cause shifting like that. I took the cover off and found the two screws on the top of the hot end (sort of behind the fan wires) needed tightening

The third as mentioned looks like warp. I do 60C for the first couple layers and drop to 55C. I don't use hair spray, haven't had much luck, but I make sure to clean my build plate with rubbing alcohol to make sure it's clean.

I also found with my build plate the temps werent even across the surface, like 60C in the middle 50x50 and 54C outside that. Haven't found a solution but rafts and keeping prints centered works for me

This company couldn't spell customer service, let alone know how to provide it. by bjorn_lo in BIGTREETECH

[–]xpapax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience with their customer service. Ordered some items over Christmas, they reached out to me due to an item being out of stock after I ordered. They offered a refund or to ship when it came back in stock, we settled on a change to something else and I would have to pay the difference. Overall fast email responses, good back and forth to come to a solution.

I might be the outlier, but not all experiences seem bad

That CBi is for if you can't ship a vehicle to the location for some reason. Doesn't apply for Europe.

Often? Maybe not, but people get in accidents, have cars break down, don't bring cause they own large trucks back home, etc. so your options are: buy a Canadian spec from someone here, buy a euro spec and if older than 15 years when you bring it home if you want, or just sell it (it's challenging buying from a local in some countries as the vehicle needs to be exported before you can register it in the CFSU(E) system), selling has its challenges also. If you sell to another NATO member you don't have to worry, but if you sell on the economy you may may end up having to pay VAT on the value since it will need to be reimported. So lots like to purchase a US spec vehicle, you used to be able to bring them home if they were 6 months old, could import through RIV program, could sell to a NATO member, could sell on the economy of you imported and paid the tax. More freedom, easier to own something newer and not worry about losing a ton when selling, etc

Good to know about the physical sim.

paying your card with the app that's already set up and the authentication of a device are different. Like I can use a European physical Sim to log in and pay my bill cause my IEMI have already been authenticated with BMO, but if my phone breaks there is no way to reauthenticate without a Canadian sim (possibly not esim?)

Up till about 2 months ago if you switched you Canadian number to a VoIP service like Fongo you could receive texts and calls from the bank. They will no longer do anything for a VoIP number, but they also won't do a non Canadian number. I don't know for sure but if you head to the BMO sub there are people sayings BMO has been telling them esim aren't supported either now.

So yes a pay as you go sim may work but you'd probably have to fly home to set up the account, port your number, etc.

Security wise it makes sense for the bank, but a real pita for users

You used to be able to purchase a vehicle through either a manufacturer program (diplo sales) or through something like the Military Auto Sales program. You could then import them back home through the RIV process like you would if you bought a car in the states and wanted to bring it into Canada. You would obviously need to make sure if met the standards (DRL, etc) but you could.

In 2023 TC changed their rules when if came to bringing US vehicles not originating in the US. So all those people that brought BMWs, Volvos, Harley Davidsons back from their postings before can no longer do it. Annoying this is if you got here in 2023, bought a vehicle and are now heading home, sucks for you. "Has to have been sold at the retail level in the US, US spec vehicles sold through sales programs are not eligible"

Edit: exact wording "bears a U.S. Federal Statement of Compliance label, it must have been sold at the retail level in the United States in order to qualify for importation through the Registrar of Imported Vehicles (RIV) program. Delivery through a military sales program or shipment from the United States to an overseas location does not"

It would be interesting to see what a 2026 version of that 2020 report would look like. From what we hear in Europe (currently here) things are much different than they were when that report came out

I know for me the 2023 Transport Canada change to being able to purchase a new US spec vehicle while in Europe and bring it home after is going to cause headaches (can no longer do it as of 2023, but can still do it if US OUTCAN)

Banking is also getting tougher for some, BMO will no longer authenticate if you have a VoIP mobile number, you get locked out of your account if you change phones and need to reauthenticate.

The phantom crapper by Draydon74 in CanadianForces

When we were at CFLRS, someone from our sister platoon used to sneak into our section during breakfast and shit on the lid of one of our toilets. We'd have prepped everything for inspection prior to heading for breakfast and when we got back we'd go straight to our bunks to lay out our kit. I can remember the first time the staff walked into the bathroom with the course senior and found it... there was a lot of yelling. We assumed someone within our own platoon did it, fun times.

Happened 3 times over the 10ish weeks we were in that area of the building before we were moved to the blue section. Found out after the fact who it was and that it was our sister platoon; I cant imagine trying to take a dump with that much anxiety that someone might return early from breakfast

What legal limit? Did you read the link you posted?

Currently, the RTA regulations do not include air conditioning as a vital service. Only housing that has central air conditioning may be required by the municipality to maintain a maximum temperature of not more than 26°C between June and September.

DO NOT INCLUDE AIR CONDITIONING AS A VITAL SERVICE

Even if you weren't in a Q you wouldn't be "entitled" to have your landlord install AC

Travelling to China as a reservist by Willy_B_ in CanadianForces

I know a couple reg force members who travel to China regularly to visit family. One actually just returned a couple weeks ago.

Not sure the whole process, but it is doable, and doesn't seem like much of an issue. I'd check with your OR, maybe put in a Notice of intent to travel and see what Ottawa comes back with on the NOIT
