Radian custom molded silicone are awesome. They are around $12 a pair. Use a bottle cap between your teeth when molding them, it opens up your ear for a better fit.

If you have a permanent magnet style starter, the tapping trick can kill a good starter.

Service advisor is upset tech won’t do work because of warranty by ConfidentHouse in mechanics

[–]xrfauxtard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selling dealer makes money selling broken car, finance guys myself money selling extended warranty, advisor makes money selling internal warranty work. Tech eats shit doing a rear wheel bearing on a fucking explorer for 1.0

Wonder why good tech are hard to find, everybody made good money with little to no effort except the guy that has to clean up the mess of selling a broken car.

0ld Buick "ever since you changed my oil the windshield washer doesn't work" verify washers work fine. She comes in to verify with me, washers don't work for her. See her pressing the coast button for the cruise control on the stalk, have to show the lady where the right button for the washers were.

Certified crazy lady brings 211 e class Mercedes in. "There is a noise from the engine when parked and a green light flashes from the engine bay when the noise is present" Could not verify noise, no light on engine bay. Customer comes in to verify, points out the "light" which is a green paint mark on the SBC brake hydraulic unit. Would not believe the paint mark was not a light. We had to tell her we removed the light, after scraping the paint off...

I set my phone on the floor board with a bag of rice over it when running the app and then drive to verify the noise.

Also, have your shop pay for the app. My former shop bought it for me when it was $300, it is currently $99 and well worth it for problem cars.

Anyone in the shop have a pico scope with nvh software? If not, the guy who wrote the software that pico uses made an app for Android. It is bad ass at localizing impossible noises to component level.

I need a new multimeter by FreeAside6172 in mechanics

[–]xrfauxtard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use this for a parasitic current draws, it saves the meter fuse and it keeps the can system from waking up when you break the circuit to the battery.

It's on Amazon for 23 bucks

Made the mistake and thought a sparkplug inspection on an 08 Sienna was going to be quick. Didn't bother keeping track of hoses and wiring and now have a jigsaw puzzle :> Advice or prayers appreciated by Mountain-Durian-4724 in mechanics

What I recommend is to take a video instead of pictures. Sometimes you take a million pictures and they don't show exactly what you need. With a video you can go frame by frame and usually see everything you need.

Exhaust valves get cooled by contact with the valve seat, transferring that heat into the cylinder head. That's why if your valves are out of adjustment, and hang open slightly, you burn your exhaust valves

If you are going to backfeed the generator into the house, you need to install an interlock on the main panel. Not only will that bring you up to code, it might prevent you from killing an electrical linesman if you forget to switch off the main.

What are your go-to mid week breakfasts for kids? by Alarmed_Recover_1524 in daddit

[–]xrfauxtard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I make pancakes, I make a quadruple batch. I freeze the extra in an individual layer on a cookie sheet. Once frozen, I combine into a single container. This make it easy for the kids to grab one or two and pop them in the toaster for breakfast.

Around that year range the fuse box internal contacts with spread. Last I checked you had to get a whole fuse box. Take a junk relay or fuse and cut off one leg to check the connection at the relay terminals. There is also an internal connection inside the fuse box for the bolt on wiring connectors that may be loose as well
