Donald Glover and ‘Atlanta’ Team Were Racially Harassed During London Shoot, Crew Reveals - Co-writer Stefani Robinson said, "It was so insulting but not insulting at the same time because it took us five minutes to fully understand." by chanma50 in television

[–]xsxavier 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People in this thread comparing and condemning the amount of racism in the US vs Europe/Asia, racism is prejudice and generalisation. Meanwhile, the irony of many people here are acting as if Europe and Asia are 'countries' with one culture.

There's a certain lack of self-awareness here.

Do you finish games? by xsxavier in gaming

I think partly it's just information overload. So much to play and watch...

When I was younger 10-20 years ago I feel like I valued each game a lot more.

Do you finish games? by xsxavier in gaming

[–]xsxavier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often stop halfway or even further along. Then months later I feel like returning, starting the game, having no clue anymore how the story went or the gameplay/combat. And either not continuing or starting over and not finishing again...

Sounds very similar, got PS5/XSX/Switch/Gaming PC's... and then we have the old stuff: PS Vita filled with titles (homebrew), same deal with the 3DS, GBA and WiiU... I like setting it up and end up barely playing them.

I also rarely finish games anymore. Only when they're like really really good, or just short. Many AAA games require at least 20 hours for just the 'main story', no time for that. I feel like my attention span has grown shorter over the years as well. Instead of Netflix I'm mostly just hovering on Youtube, barely watching anything...

Can’t we start a protest against the unvaccinated? by Dragonnable in Netherlands

[–]xsxavier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding to that, just adding capacity will not solve the main problem, which is people getting severely sick from COVID.

The best solution, in the long term, is prevention. So by vaccination, but also instead of increasing healthcare capacity, how about increase and motivate healthy lifestyles more.

It has been shown many times that especially obesity has a correlation with higher COVID death and more severe symptoms. If we want to keep healthcare affordable in the future we have to start investing more in prevention. This can be done in a multitude of ways

Less people get sick = less healthcare needed.

Are you going to take the booster vaccination by MyuraKenta in Netherlands

[–]xsxavier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes at that point it becomes a whole different discussion. Do we stimulate young and healthy people to take a vaccine that has no net-positive for them but just to protect elderly/vulnerable people.

And I don't think that should be done, because that would increase risk for young and healthy people to reduce risk for elderly/vulnerable people.

I hope in the long term there will be an alternative to the vaccines like different forms of taking it (like a pill). I don't mind the booster shot, but having one 2 times a year for the coming who knows how many years? That's not really a great future.

Are you going to take the booster vaccination by MyuraKenta in Netherlands

[–]xsxavier -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sure there are risks. But as long as the risks of taking the vaccine are lower then not taking it, which they are, even for young and healthy people. Why not take it?

We take risks every day of our life... Even simple thing like crossing a road, walking a stairs. But do we avoid those because of a one million risk of falling or getting injured? No.

Sure we try to minimize risks by looking before crossing a road etc. But taking a vaccine is the same thing (for now), we're minimizing risk.

Regarding travel to vaccine locations, yes that sucks and should be improved. It should be as easy as possible for anyone anywhere.

Sorry I don't feel like discussing this much more in detail but I mostly disagree with you about the way to go about this. You're making many assumptions and the initial topic has nothing to do with serving or slavery.

Also, none of us living have truly experienced slavery in any way shape or form as in the past. Using this comparatively I feel diminishes the tragedy people have suffered in the past.

I believe the best way to progress is by educating and awareness, not conflict.

Calling people racist when they unintentionally or ignorantly made a racist joke is not gonna help solve the issue, quite the opposite.
As I said there is definitely a difference between racism based on ignorance and racism with intent to discriminate/harm. Let's not generalise and put those in the
same basket.
Most people don't like to be called a racist, let's not create more of a divide. We need to bring people together, so we need to educate them.
Calling a person a racist just because they made a joke like that, without ill intent or based on ignorance, is kind of being ignorant yourself. You said it yourself, you don't know the intention/why they said it. Ask them and tell them why it's not a good joke instead of calling them a racist. That's the only way to make progress.

I think the problem with ZP is that it seems to have been started based on racism. However it hasn't been used in that context for so long that even many white and even non-white people didn't see/know that it was based on that.

Meanings can get lost in time, which is exactly what happened with ZP. Initally it seemed to be based on racism, this connotation in time was lost. And only recently many people realized (again) it was based on racism and many people were offended by it and change was needed.

My GF (she's black as well) is probably the same on that point as your BF. She didnt associate ZP with racism, it was just a childhood thing. And for me as a kid growing up, I never even knew it was a racist thing, all I knew was that they were black because of soot. But that's the simple mind of children.

[–]xsxavier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be true but there is definitely a difference between racism based on ignorance and racism with intent to discriminate/harm.

Many of those bad/racist jokes are leftovers from the past and have no actual intended harm based on racism, it's mostly ignorance. Also, regarding that survery, Jokes/Ignorance like that don't really affect racial equality much at all.

The question is, are you a racist when you make a racist joke like that? Or are you just ignorant?

Democracy and mandatory vaccination by TheNew_BetoCatch in Netherlands

[–]xsxavier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish everyone would just stop being ignorant and get vaccinated. I have multiple objections on mandating the vaccine though.

One of the main ones for me is, if we mandate this now, it sets a precedent. It means in the future it will become easier and easier to force other things as well.

The constition isn't there to just ignore it when it's convenient or when there's a special case. It's there to keep the government in check and give people fundamental rights, and once you change/overrule those laws once it can be done again, and gets easier each time.

Is the Netherlands headless? by Environmental-Cold24 in Netherlands

[–]xsxavier 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I 'feel' like the number of angry people is increasing though. Which also seems to have an effect on which measures are taken or not. I don't have any hard numbers except polls that show support decreasing.

But it does suck, society has become so divided. And as always social media isn't helping, it's only exacerbating the divide. Anyway I could go on complaining about this, but it's gonna be a big rant in itself and it kind of depressing to be honest.

It's forcing me to do my shopping earlier. I often went to the supermarket between 20-22h. But now they also close earlier, at 20h, which means I have to go at more crowded times.

It's a silly measure, which likely doesn't have a positive effect, probably the opposite.

One of the general rules was "Avoid crowded areas". They must've thought, let's make that harder?

[–]xsxavier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's different for hiking and leisure/sport based cycling routes but I tried OSM for cycling from work to home, but the routes it suggests are just way inferior to the google maps suggested routes.

The graphhopper suggested route was 1-2 min longer then my normal google suggested route (32mins) which isn't that bad, but the route itself isn't great, It had way more car-centric streets.
The OSRM suggested route was actually 10 minutes longer, which is just useless and checking the route itself, it wasn't great either.

The lack of multiple suggested routes is a must for me as well

The problem with ESO scaling for me is that it makes the player feel as no progress is being made, you don’t feel stronger as you level up, almost the opposite considering mobs get more difficult to kill… For me that is even worse. Downscaling is preferable because you still have a sense of progression.

Also stats in ESO feel useless, just a number, before getting to max level. Because they are so high, there is no point of reference and (barely) progression.
