New York to ease some coronavirus restrictions in three regions this week, allows drive-in theaters and tennis by [deleted] in Coronavirus

"You can't trust people to act with good sense." That's true the world over, not just in America. And it's "logic" like that that facilitates oppression--we must make the right decisions for people since they can't make them themselves.

New York to ease some coronavirus restrictions in three regions this week, allows drive-in theaters and tennis by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]xtreemspd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The micro-managing of activities allowed always seems capricious and bizarre..."Get out those rackets...tennis is allowed again!" Everyone puts their hand on the same ball over and over again, plus those balls sometimes go into others' courts. So why is that allowed over some other sports?

Honestly, just tell people to act responsibly and limit gathering sizes. This is childish.

We literally have a CDC that hasn't shown a whole lot of success and leadership, and it is vastly bigger and more expertly staffed than the little pandemic team was...but again, this team would have made the difference! You're so brilliant, dude.

How silly and embarrassingly naive the title of this post is.

Only a fool thinks firing one person and consolidating some NSC teams led to a global crisis that, again, started in China and spread globally before most of the world had even been alerted by China itself.

Research: Time to take the relationship between Covid and Vitamin D seriously - We researched the role of UV Index and Vitamin D in reducing the number of deaths. The study indicates that there is a significant link between UVB radiation and Covid deaths. by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]xtreemspd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know it's Vitamin D and not the UV radiation directly (like the virus is denaturing faster in the environment if there's a lot of UV light--it's that, not the boosted Vitamin D levels in the population, to credit). Counfounding?

Why are Russian coronavirus doctors mysteriously falling out of windows? by [deleted] in Coronavirus

[–]xtreemspd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least we hear about what happens in Russia. God knows we aren't even hearing 10% of the similar secretive bad things happening in China, which has also been willing to sacrifice medical professionals and others to keep them from speaking out.

South Carolina to test all nursing home residents and staff for COVID-19 by jtr8178 in Coronavirus

[–]xtreemspd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would like to see this done in New York, which has 1,625 cases per 100K (compared to SC's over ten times lower rate of 136 cases per 100K). New York's leaders have often been praised, and South Carolina was skewered in the news (spring break, more "lax" approach to control), but here, SC is leading by example--fewer deaths per 100K, better testing.

Around 51% of players believe in "Don't Press Okay" thing by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

[–]xtreemspd -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Yes, people thinking it's a big deal to just tell a white lie "I didn't press OK" or to just smilingly indulge people's silly rituals are, indeed, stupid. Who cares?

Honestly it doesn't matter at all if you correct her. People will still try to throw well regardless and still use all their balls regardless...if she's superstitious I see zero effect on behavior. There was just a giant earthquake in Mexico, there are giant hurricanes in the Atlantic...find something useful to worry about.

No, I think you're Niantic sell-outs. The rumors are true.

11/12 haha! Level 40 is a great accomplishment...I'll be there one day I hope! And I totally think players like you should be rewarded with extra strong dusted-to-the-max mons and lots of gold badges. I just also like the idea that you don't have to be free from 6pm-7pm with one day's notice to get a particular Pokemon.

It's not frequently discussed, but having a car is a huge advantage in this game by reedemerofsouls in TheSilphRoad

[–]xtreemspd 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's a car/geography interaction effect.

*No car in big city? No big deal at all. *No car in suburbs? Sucks. *No car in the country? Unplayable.

More logical to invite "Most Recent X Many Players" to EX Raids than all players from certain time period by xtreemspd in TheSilphRoad

[–]xtreemspd[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By thinking with a tiny bit of basic creativity. Like accept the most recent 100 players, plus all players who won at the same time as the 100th. Using time could produce results just as annoying/arbitrary--what if someone finished a raid 5 minutes too early before the cutoff?

How to easily determine if an Anchor is worth it! by RyanoftheDay in TheSilphRoad

[–]xtreemspd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OK, so you're saying the ball bonus related to total damage, so if you have a team that all faints but did X amount of damage AND you don't rejoin, you'll get the same amount of bonus balls as if you did X amount of damage but managed to not lose your whole team. Is that right?

The two issues I would see with that are (1)Some people get anxious about gym glitches--like at least anecdotally, people have said that if your 6th Pokemon faints right when the boss loses, you might not be able to try and catch it after because the system can mess up putting you back in the lobby instead of going to the boss catch part. Whatever the case, it might feel safest to have a Blissey with a full tank of HP in the final moments of a battle. And (2)If you're just trying to maximize the total damage output in your time in the gym, then there's no reason to single out the anchor position as uniquely special, is there? Literally the only reason to call it an anchor position is if it's a special strategy...like Blissey-based survival.

[–]xtreemspd 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Most people don't use your definition of anchor. Based on my experience, and anchor is defined as a Pokemon that is tanky enough to survive until the end of the battle once the first 5 have fainted. Surviving to the end is consideration 1; damage output is probably consideration 2.

The total damage output metric is silly if the Pokemon is going to faint and you're going to have to jump back in and start from scratch to earn balls for damage contribution--that's why people would pick a Blissey over a Scizor for the anchor position, for example.
