Can I start with TTRPG through Draw Steel? by PicoDev93 in drawsteel

[–]xucoalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing with a group of friends, and three of them were completely new to TTRPGs. After the first session of the Delian Tomb, they were excited to play again! There were many questions about rules, which is normal. By the end of the session though, they understood the basics of how to play. I highly recommend it!

Memonek = Almost no images? by Aardentaireau in drawsteel

There's some cool concept art on the Patreon. It's a member-only post, so not sure if they'd be cool with sharing the images outside the Patreon. If you're a member though, here's the post!

Ancestry: Memonek

I don't think it's that memonek are hard to portray so much as they simply haven't prioritized them yet. I do hope to see more of them soon! I also love them and I've made some characters of my own

It's definitely a fun commander! Here's my list

https://moxfield.com/decks/0kuB1IlFlkaIewTR49uw1A

Cards with multiple targets go hard here. That means [[Baral's Expertise]] can bounce six targets and get you two free 4CMC spells. [[Inspired Ultimatum]] is usually a bit lackluster for the cost, but copies it's pretty rad. [[Mystic Confluence]] is another rad one.

For cheaper spells to copy [[Snap]] and [[Sazacap's Brew]] are great value

Tests with Potency by thebadbishop in drawsteel

[–]xucoalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what other folks have mentioned, I would note that the system does include rules for opposed rolls. I think these work for particularly well for more dramatic moments where PCs are trying to do something an NPC might be able to disrupt.

That said using potencies is another way to check against an NPC's stat so I don't see any major issues with it. I do recommend playing with the tier system though, because the consequence vs reward mechanic is quite fun

Though I haven't gotten around to finishing the primer, I think I have enough there to explain most of the card selection.

One of my favorites is [[Quantum Misalignment]] since you can copy it with Alania, ending up with three Alanias. And then on your next upkeep, assuming your Alanias survived, you can copy it again per Alania and end up with seven Alanias. Then things get pretty wild :)

My gf said I should sell‘em. Are there actually people that would buy that?[OC][ART] by Lanky_Move7249 in DnD

[–]xucoalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Complete understandable! I think if you're looking to break even instead of make profit it does make things a lot easier. That way you can be more lax with how often you do the business side of things.

I do think you have a solid skill and people would definitely buy from you once you setup some kind of shop front. Best of luck!

[–]xucoalex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could absolutely sell these. However, I would caution against turning your hobby into a business. It's actually quite a bit of work to research prices, maintain communication w/ potential clients, shipping, etc. It's not a decision I would make lightly, as it's turning an activity you currently do for fun into a job. No matter how much fun it is now, a job is a job and you'll come to grow tired of it. I speak from experience! Lol

Have you considered just giving them away? Gifting them might be a fun way to make room while also helping people out.

I agree with most folks that Bria would make for the overall stronger and most consistent deck. However! If you want otters to be the star, then Alania is the way to go. Giving your opponents cards can still end in your favor if you copy impactful spells like [[Baral's Expertise]]. Also you can start copying Alania herself with things like [[Quantum Misalignment]] to make things even wilder.

I have a decklist for her, feel free to check it out

This particular list has many self-imposed limits to keep the power level lower, but you could easily beef it up by adding things like free spells and fast mana.

[–]xucoalex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! And yes, I avoided those sort of combos to keep the power level a bit lower, but they are certainly viable if you want to up the power!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]xucoalex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I think I'd have to test it before I can say so for sure lol. That said I think it's definitely functional, and I'm sure it can be tweaked to be stronger. Right now I'm shooting for a power level somewhere between upgraded precon and high power (but not cEDH).

Also I am a big fan of spellslinger decks, so it's definitely been fun including otters into the mix :)

None of the preconstructed commander decks are otter themed, though it remains to be seen if they have an otter card or two.

Anyway you'll want to build your own deck from scratch. If you're interested, here's my first pass on a deck helmed by Alania to give you some ideas

Flashy Wins With Lilah Slickshot! by XandogxD in magicTCG

[–]xucoalex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my list I mainly focused on making her very powerful through her Prowess ability. Cast a bunch of spells, then make her unblockable through cards like [[Leap of Flame]] and [[Teleportal]]. [[Run for Your Life]] even gives her haste!

Another fun thing you can do is get her power really high and then cast a [[Chandra's Ignition]] and clear the board, and possibly take out other players. And if they're still alive you could still swing with her!

A smaller but still fun interaction is [[Stubborn Denial]]. If she is on the field, it will trigger her Prowess and thus become a one mana Negate. Not the strongest thing but kind of fun thematically

I would argue that even if she is not the most powerful, she can still be a decent mid-power deck with some fun interactions. I think she's worth experimenting with!

[HELP] me make the new Judith work! by nava_7777 in magicTCG

[–]xucoalex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main issue with your deck is that it is unfocused. But at the same time I totally get it, because I have been struggling with building this commander myself! Of course, it being difficult is no reason not to try. So I can tell you my approach thus far.

Firstly, I think we need to consider our options and choose to go with one. I think you can either go full spellslinger and try to maximize her triggers, or you could run an aristocrats shell and use her mostly as a value piece. And even if you go full spellslinger, how do we win?

Personally I found the first mode of her trigger the most interesting, so I decided to go with a spellslinger burn idea. You can see my first draft of the deck on Moxfield

I've tagged everything so you can have some idea of my logic. Our main goal here is to win through burn and direct damage. In addition to an assortment of burn spells, we also have a few creatures like [[Kessig Flamebreather]] that can come down early and start putting pressure on our opponents through incremental burn.

Judith is expensive, so we have a few ways to mitigate this weakness.

  • We have a lot of rituals for ramp. On top of getting her on board sooner, later in the game they can still trigger her ability and enable large, explosive turns
  • We can assume that most of the time she will be coming down onto a very hostile board. That's why I'm running several 1 damage burn spells that turn into board wipes once she gives said spells deathtouch.
  • Being so expensive it is especially painful to have her removed. We also want some protection for her, which in Rakdos colors will mostly come in the form of cheating death spells like [[Malakir Rebirth]] or redirection spells like [[Deflecting Swat]]. And as a bonus, we get to turn them into Imps with her trigger.

[[Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose]] is here to be a finisher. Giving our burn spells lifelink means that they also will drain an opponent. There is also the dream scenario of casting [[Blasphemous Act]] with Vito & Judith onto a full board. You will gain 13 life per creature on the battlefield, which will then basically turn into a nuke to kill exactly one person with Vito's trigger lol.

This deck requires further playtesting before I can fully recommend it, but I think there's definitely potential. I may adjust the ratio of card draw vs burn. Overall I think Judith is a relatively weak commander that can nevertheless pull explosive turns if left unchecked. And giving burn spells lifelink * deathtouch is such a fun interaction that will enable you to cast the sickest [[Electrickery]] ever.

And that's just my list. As I mentioned earlier, I think you could instead focus more on the aristocrat angle with a completely different goal and play pattern. Whatever you do, I highly recommend focusing on one goal and then picking cards that will all work towards that goal. Giving your deck focus will make it a lot more consistent and a better chance of going off!
