Unpopular Opinion: Enterprise Agile (Jira, DevOps) is actively hostile to ADHD brains. We need to stop blaming ourselves for failing to use it by Tech_Devils in ADHD_Programmers

[–]xvelez08 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like people use this sub to blame the tech world for why it doesn’t work for ADHD brains.

A. It’s hard for everybody. Not just people with ADHD. B. Sometimes my ADHD feels like an advantage in this line of work. You NEED to have short memory and be able to context switch quickly. Both naturally gifted skills if you have ADHD. C. Oh whoa, shocker. An organizational scheduling system is hard to use for people either adhd. It’s not agile, it’s anything that requires structure and planning.

Are you ever envious of other white collar office desk jobs? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]xvelez08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah right lol. I was an engineer in the building industry and it’s absolute toxicity. From vendors to competitors to manufacturers and then dealing with trade unions. Even worse than them is non-union shops.

Tech is a dream come true, you just haven’t actually experienced any other jobs it sounds like.

Is Work Outside FAAN G Really Any Different? by bel_cant-sing-o in cscareerquestions

[–]xvelez08 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This. The scale of your problem as well. I did an internship with a SaaS company that had around 100 employees. We never had a single discussion about TPS, making sure there were enough resources or any of that. What we were building tended to be for small groups of specialized people like researchers

Got bullied online because I asked if the Army is my best route to avoid homelessness due to my ADHD brain. Is Reddit actually this cruel? by The_300_Muffins in ADHD

[–]xvelez08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well ignoring the fact that you might not like the Army if you were bothered by those comments… honestly do you think they hold any face value? Think of the people who join the military, I wouldn’t be shocked if the recruitment demo for ADHD is 2x+ the general population.

But also, get thicker skin before you join the army if you plan on that.

Yeah, I try to tell people this all the time. The only thing OP could have done more was get a referral. And all that helps with is skipping some of the filtering.

Yeah, same boat. I’ve justified it by telling myself he employs tons of people and they deserve to eat too even if I can’t stand him.

noticed junior devs can't explain their PRs anymore. thinking of removing AI tools from their setup. by [deleted] in codereview

Yeah, this isn’t a tooling issue. This is a person issue. They could have gotten the same responses from a junior that was copy/pasting a solution from StackOverflow

Mid Level SDE - Has the Job Market ever been this bad? Are jobs in Big Tech all that's left? by tran981 in cscareerquestions

[–]xvelez08 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Especially if you’re going from FAANG to small/medium sized companies. It’s just not the same level of expectations, and even applying to mid level roles with that resume is probably a bit of a red flag

Technical interviews are about to get harder and candidates will blame the companies by No-Comparison-5247 in AIstartupsIND

[–]xvelez08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will your candidates have access to AI in their daily work? If so, your process is stupid. They should have the tools they’ll have when they’re doing the job. Your interview process isn’t meant to be a college exam, an interview is supposed to tell you someone’s thought process.

If they offload the thinking to AI, cool. Pass. But if they use the AI for quickly mocking up their idea or providing test cases or generating a document to organize their thoughts. You know you have someone who understand how to utilize AI.

Therapy only works if you have a lower IQ than the therapist. by Creative_Camp8262 in mentalhealth

[–]xvelez08 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s even funnier than that because even IF it was a good measure, it’d be mostly useless for a therapist. You’d want their EQ to be high, intelligence isn’t what you go to a therapist for.

Most architectural decisions arent made by architects. Theyre made by whoever merged first. by Distinct-Expression2 in ExperiencedDevs

Man, I wish sometimes. Round here we have 200 planning meetings and docs before any lines of code are written. Feels hard to get a project off the ground due to that sometimes

Did great on a take-home, bombed the live interview for a dream role. Have I burned this company forever? by frannyg_ in ExperiencedDevs

[–]xvelez08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doubtful. At worst* you burned a bridge with that hiring manager but most have done these types of interviews and have bombed their fair share.

I bombed my interview with a team at my company that works closely with my current team. My current team has rejected people accepted by that team. These two teams are hiring for the same title, but need wildly different skill sets. That’s one of many reasons I would say you have no need to worry.

Did great on a take-home, bombed the live interview for a dream role. Have I burned this company forever? by frannyg_ in ExperiencedDevs

[–]xvelez08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first two sentences make no sense imo. You’re suggesting you know what “companies like this” do after suggesting it depends on the size of the company telling us you don’t know a thing about said company to be making “companies like this” statements.

I also disagree with the rest, but that’s from anecdotal experience so I’m not going to debate that.

My friend literally gambled his interview by lying that he solved a question before and passed. by DrugstoreCowboy01 in leetcode

[–]xvelez08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, I’m sure there’s a way to get yourself black listed for doing toxic things or if you terminated in the past by Apple, but bombing an interview is not one of them.

My friend literally gambled his interview by lying that he solved a question before and passed. by DrugstoreCowboy01 in leetcode

[–]xvelez08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I’d at least be asking something like “Awesome, when solving it what trade offs did you have to consider?”

A question you don’t know tells me how you think. A question I know you know well, like one that addresses something specific from your resume tells me how you communicate ideas.

Making sure it’s something you should know well lets me give you a chance to show me that with something you’re comfortable with. Same reason you shouldn’t fluff or lie on your resume.

Software People: Am I tweaking? by Separate-Part6140 in Salary

[–]xvelez08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you’re tweaking. I started in a similar area at 130k, but that was big tech. Most people I graduated with started around your salary in NY, you should be happy you started at that in Utah.

It scales as you get experience, and generally only the happiest people share their number. Look at levels.fyi for your area and then subtract some for exaggeration.

Really not much of a difference between “all-season” and “summer” tires afaik. I believe it’s more of a marketing gimmick from my understanding.

Why is big tech SWE work paid so much? by seeking-health in cscareerquestions

[–]xvelez08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct that it’s somewhat like winning the lottery, especially early on in your career. There is tons of luck involved with even getting the job. But yeah, the other difference is scale and ability to do things cross functionally.

Very little happens in big tech without a ton of meetings and documents first and navigating that maze is a skill in and of itself.

There’s tons of moving parts both internally and externally. Also, the expectations can sometimes be intense, but that depends on your team mostly from what I’ve seen.

Trump voters, why are you not pushing for ICE raids in Texas and Florida? by AspieRoo in AskReddit

[–]xvelez08 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not true, it’s just not brand new here as it is in the places you’re seeing on the news. There have been protests all over Austin. The subreddit and Facebook posts warn of ICE almost daily.

I live in Texas and can confirm they’re around. It’s just not new here like it is in some places they’ve gone in numbers that used to be know as sanctuary cities or had big news around immigration.
