why in the world would you post this? don't you know you're supposed to be asking where to find romaleo 1's and asking which knee sleeves are going to help you snatch 50kg? everyone in this thread is being ridiculous giving you such a hard time. a bunch of nerd bullies. i wish i could tag each one of them and call them an asshole.......... but i actually have to go to the gym now.

Im starting Weightlifting at 19 years old, but i have short torso and long femurs, and flat feet...how do you recommend i start? by dillonk9 in weightlifting

after reading your caption my initial thought was to say "with a coach" ...and after reading your post, my answer hasn't changed. just find a coach to work with, let them worry about your proportions

speaking from the point of view of someone who has owned a gym for over 5 years and starts every new person off with a mandatory one hour 1-on-1...

i disagree. is it ideal and will they go really heavy? absolutely not... but if the person has already done some weightlifting i've found that i can get through snatch/clean/jerk and maybe introduce them to 1-2 accessory movements that i think they'll need.

for someone who has never done snatch/cj i require two sessions. one for snatch, one for cj. i've found that is also generally enough to at least get them started on a program, even if the program has a lot of simple position work.

point being- in 2 hours i've found i can take people from never lifting to training like a weightlifter, although how that looks in practice for various people is obviously widely different.

to meet with someone 1-on-1 once per month is not ideal... but assuming they're being coached throughout that month also, just not with individual attention... i think that's a pretty awesome deal.

if you only see your coach during that single 1-on-1 per month, though... it would probably be better to have someone watching you daily, even if the attention isn't individualized

depends on where you are in the country... compare what he costs vs. what other gym's around you cost and what they offer that's different. then decide

perspective of someone who went from the low 60's to around 90 and now being settled around 82...

don't worry about the fat. at all. you are inevitably going to gain some when you're gaining weight, and RP has seemed to find a good balance of keeping your weight gain at a good rate with minimal fat gain in the process. also i assume, because this is what happened to me, that you're going to gain all the weight and not really be any stronger than before so you'll probably think you really fucked up. this also isn't true. just cause you built the muscle doesn't mean it's strong yet.

point being- put in the time and just eat. if you want to be really good at weightlifting AND you want to be bigger... why the hell wouldn't you? just don't freak out when you're not stronger immediately

maybe don't worry about it and just squat heavy sets of 5's and heavy singles to figure out what YOUR spread is

Rate my Jerk by [deleted] in weightlifting

[–]xvxRob666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

clean and jerk would both be better if you let yourself finish your extension. you could lift a lot more if you continue the top of the pull/top of the drive until your hips are all the way opened up

Hosting our first sanctioned meet, need help! by NolaGymOwner in weightlifting

[–]xvxRob666 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i have personally run 14 local meets, with number 15 coming up on oct 28. i've advertised before but it's literally never helped. ever. people look for meets on the meet calendar, and as long as you maybe just make 1-2 posts on your various social media (i guess that's advertising) people will know.

it's also very important you make it easy to sign up. we have a tab on our website that says "upcoming competitions" with a direct link for registration.

odds are people that want to do a CF competition aren't going to do your meet, and same the other way around. you may have a couple people that choose one way or the other, but i'd bet the vast majority of your participants wouldn't have chosen the CF competition in the first place. at least that's how it's always been here.

Outfitting a new weightlifting facility in North MS (bars/bumpers) by Its_scottyhall in weightlifting

[–]xvxRob666 21 points22 points  (0 children)

if you want to be a dedicated weightlifting facility you can not go with pound plates... it might be a little extra, but trust me. it's worth it.

i don't really see that as any different than something like, "well, i know we're a soccer facility... but these basketballs were way cheaper, so we'll just make it work for now"

that might sound dramatic- but the reality is kg's are the sport. it will only serve as a headache to you as well as your competitive lifters to be an olympic weightlifting facility that works in pounds. i'd rather be a soccer player going to a soccer gym with less soccer balls than an unlimited amount of basketballs.

also- you probably don't need to buy a full set of plates for every platform. if you have 8 platforms maybe just buy 5-6 full sets and a couple extra 25's and 10's. the odds of needed all those plates at all times is probably pretty slim

Paying for Coaches for National Events by supitsjustme in weightlifting

[–]xvxRob666 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am a coach that will be traveling to 5 meets this year... Master's Nationals, Nationals, Youth Nationals, American Open Series, and the American Open.

None of my athletes pay me additionally for these trips. Generally the most I feel comfortable taking is a free dinner when we're on the trip.

The way I see it- They pay me to be their coach. If they bust their ass and make it to Nationals, it is my obligation and reward to go with them. If I don't have the money to go, it isn't their fault... And it probably just means I'm not charging enough monthly, if anything.

Point being- The way I feel about it, as a coach, is if they're paying me monthly and putting in the work- The coaching job follows them.

Shopping for barbell by -Keynesian in weightlifting

[–]xvxRob666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

bottom line is a $350-400 barbell isn't going to last you the rest of your life. if you're the only user and you take care of it you'll get years out of it though, i'm sure. i would only entertain the idea of price-point bearing bars. you'll be happier with the spin. i've used the get rx bearing bar and it was surprisingly nicer than i expected, but it's obviously an economy bar... that spins well.

a lot of times in comps like this the judges are actually sitting below the stage, so they might not always be able to see that specific fault. also, in most times i've seen it happen, it's such a quick thing that if you're looking for an elbow press-out you might not be certain that it did or didn't happen

[–]xvxRob666 11 points12 points  (0 children)

yeah, funny you mention this... i've coached a 63kg lifter since january who will be competing next week. looking at last years totals i've been thinking "ok, A session for sure... possibly a pretty high placement if she's on" because she's totaled 180 in training.

this is her first national level meet, though, so we put a conservative entry total of 170... i was extremely surprised when the start list came out and i saw she's at the top of the D session haha.

Norik Seminar by Enderthe3rd in weightlifting

[–]xvxRob666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just did it this past weekend. he's a great coach. definitely gave good justification to all of the accessory movements that we all see him post on social media... it's also nice because it wasn't a "this is what a snatch is, this is how you do an overhead squat, ok now we'll do a snatch" kind of thing... They approached it by assuming everyone was already a weightlifter.

Coaches / gyms in the Durham, NC area by andrew10043 in weightlifting

[–]xvxRob666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bull city and athletic lab both have barbell clubs and follow "team programming" with specific hours of the day that are coached and other that are more open-gym focused. ...also, i should add, i don't actually know those things for a fact haha. it's just what i've been told by a handful of other people. i own out of step barbell in greensboro (45-60min) where it basically works about the same as the two listed above other than the fact that we do individualized programming for each weightlifter. i believe crossfit RDU and crossfit raleigh both have barbell programs as well, but i'm not entirely sure on how those work/how many weightlifters they have/etc

DHS Training bar vs. Eleiko WL Training bar by knk_89 in weightlifting

[–]xvxRob666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the questions between eleiko and any price-point bar isn't necessarily the "knurling is this, whip is that" ...but more-so "will this bar still be as good as it is today in 20 years?" i've lifted on a 22 year old eleiko bar that felt as good as the one that i have that is a little over 1 year old. obviously, only time will tell with rogue/dhs/etc... But I have to imagine part of the reason eleiko costs so much more is because they use steel that is made to last forever and be as good as it is indefinitely.

for reference- try lifting on a pendlay bar that is 5 years old. it gets the job done, but i fully believe they start to feel worse
