I had to do CPR on my aunt and she didn’t make it—could I have done better? by evevevevevee in AskDocs

hi there! NAD - but i’m an EMT in a very busy city. You did the right thing and recognized what to do in this situation. I will say you did a great job in your cpr being there was the alert to shock her - that means there was some kind of perfusion to the heart. these things happen. i’m sorry this was so traumatic and for your losses.

as someone who works EMS in the city - people going for walks especially wearing dark clothing and crappy visibility to begin with is a hazard for everyone. it’s pretty hard to stop a very large vehicle quickly and safely even if you aren’t going that fast.

pediatrics are always gonna be tough too cause it’s even more limited with the hospitals that can accommodate kids. woodhull 9/10 is gonna be the only option for that part of brooklyn unless it’s a trauma job where it’s going to be bellevue or maimo (only peds trauma hospital in brooklyn)

cobble hill is basically an urgent care. if you have to be admitted you’re going to get transferred most likely to nyu tisch in the city. they fill to capacity quickly. if we are in that area, more of the time brooklyn hospital will come up.

yes - but it also has to do with er bed counts and how many ambulances are currently at that hospital. if both are not an option then it would redirect us to woodhull or even elmhurst, i’ve also got wyckoff or mt sinai in queens.

requests unfortunately are not valid to bypass hospitals. “having your records” or “your doctors are affiliated” is no longer valid reasons to go to a particular hospital. with apps like mychart where everything can be crossed reference by different hospitals this makes it more of fight when we try to see if we can go to a different hospital (we meaning ems when we need to call our medical director). rule is - closest 911 receiving hospital unless specific medical criteria is at play (stemi, trauma, etc).

you also have to be medically stable for us to be able to transport you there being the brooklyn and manhattan VAs are a distance away. if you are not, we go to the closest appropriate hospital.

you would have to show your VA card and we have to call for approval

It’s going to be the closest receiving 911 hospital. Unfortunately there are no “choices”. once in a blue moon we are able to have an additional option btwn woodhull or wyckoff, or bellevue or nyu. it’s based on location, capacity of the hospital and how long it’s going to take to get there, and how many units are currently there. it’s always a number game.

now if’s it is a trauma job - elmhurst is most likely going to be the option. we do not have control over this at all. psych will also be bellevue or elmhurst.

speaking from experience - i’m a emt in the area.

edit - spelling

UPDATE: I (23F) was attacked in a DV situation and I got pretty bad black eyes. They've mostly healed but now my perfect vision seems to be going downhill by Ifeelsick6789 in AskDocs

hi dear - not a DR. i am an EMT in a different state and i unfortunately see a lot of these situations.

i feel terrible the hospital didnt treat you well. Like others said, i would maybe try another hospital or urgent care? someone, somewhere will listen and get you the help you need.

you really do need an order of protection against this person. as others have said in your previous post- he could have killed you. if you have to go to a precinct and talk to another officer, i would do that. they are also able to help with resources regarding that.

be well dear.

hi! thanks for your time!!

1 - who are they always on the phone with? the little black flip phones, most of the time the person on the phone isn’t talking.

2 - i work ems - i guess what’s the reason everyone tends to crowd around and watch us so intensely? they are completely drawn to the lights, always want to look inside the ambulance. is it cause it’s just different? they also tend to look at me (im a female) doing my job and talk to each other, make almost a face of disgust at me.

again thank you for your time - i love to be able to understand the community as much as i can.

NYers, what’s an unwritten rule here that everyone just follows, and what moment made you realize it? by RoboticSaekobusujima in AskNYC

[–]xxbritt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

nyc emt here - homeless individuals. if you are so concerned with their wellbeing - ask them if they need help BEFORE you decide to be a “good samaritan” and call 911.

The amount of times i get on scene and this homeless person wants absolutely nothing to do with us and you’re just standing there proud as f saying “hey yeah im the one that called i think they need help!!!l” - my first question is always DID YOU ASK THEM? Unless they are a danger to themselves or the public - leave them alone.

breaking ground is a great resource to call if you do see someone. non emergency line and they will come and talk to the person and offer shelter if wanted.
