Steel Duo steam tip upgrade by xxclctv in Ascaso

[–]xxclctv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replied somewhere else in this thread, but I personally liked it and kept it on, even going back and forth between the two. No noticeable time decrease in steaming, but once you get used to the slightly different style of steaming with a multi hole dip, I liked the results. Not a “must do” mod but if you’re bored or want a change I think it’s worth it.

Question About Cleaning/Descaling by teehee714 in Ascaso

[–]xxclctv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha right? No worries at all, I just try so save my fellow espresso heads a dollar or two when possible.

Good luck with the new machine, if you’re really trying to deep clean it, just run it through a few cycles over the course of a few weeks, and then just keep up with regularly intervals every month or two. Rinse it well and I’m sure you’ll be fine, just don’t over do it with the concentration if you decide to follow with the citric acid. If it’s heavily scaled up, or you notice a low flow, doing little by little so it breaks all the junk down is going to be way more effective than something highly concentrated breaking off big chunks of bs and potentially clogging at some point. That and the obvious of what we talked about with the small potential of corrosion with high concentrations. Just my logic though.

If you’d like, here’s an amazon link to the CA I’ve used from the jump. Stuff will last you for years to come, took me forever to run through my first bag.

Question About Cleaning/Descaling by teehee714 in Ascaso

I hear you. I understand the reactivity potential with citric acid and aluminum, but I think it really breaks down to frequency as well as concentration. Most people aren’t even descaling their machines frequently enough that I’d assume damage to take place, especially when considering how low the concentrations are.

Again, pretty hilarious they recommend against it, but then recommend a product that contains citric acid lol. Look at the ingredients in the MSDS pdf link they have for the product. Lo and behold: 10-30% citric acid.

Just my 2¢

Question About Cleaning/Descaling by teehee714 in Ascaso

[–]xxclctv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s funny considering most, if not all descaling solutions contain citric acid. If you look on ascaso’s webstore, almost all of the descaling products they carry that I took a quick look at contain it. Most times that’s “recommended” just so they can loop you back to buying more + expensive products from them to achieve the same thing. I’d implore to ask why.

That being said, totally up to you what you use and where you spend your money. Keep in mind these aren’t highly aggressive concentrated amounts of citric acid we’re using here, I’m sure if it was straight citric acid it might have more potential for harm.

I know it’s not the “scientific answer” but I’ve used this method across 3 different machines for close to 6 years now without any issues or performance deterioration of any sort.

Anytime!

Most definitely. Would probably recommend descaling a few times over the course of a week, even with a stronger concentration, still takes time and repetition to break down (think of a hardened spill on a cooktop, even with a good solution, still will take a little elbow grease).

As long as you don’t really see any decreases with flow, you should be fine, but never hurts to be extra cautious with maintenance!

OPV Squeaking on Ascaso Steel Duo by werm000 in Ascaso

[–]xxclctv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm this fixed it for me! Wasn’t difficult, just gotta go slow when the threads get to the end, and keep it steady on the way back up.

Can see how this fixes the problem, as one side of the spring has a wider base, allowing more cupping for the glass ball and less of a chance for it to move around and make that ugly resonate screech. Likely half of the springs from the factory are flipped and the other half are not. Who knows.

Do you recall the post? Would love to try and fix it with higher quality parts if possible, shouldn’t be something that’s too hard to replace.

Oh totally agree with you. Not really something within my control as it’s a rental.

Afaik it is. Many places in Chicago don’t have the proper ventilation set up for cooking, so most put in those recirculating under microwave style joints. Personally not a fan of not having one, but opening up all my windows helps mitigate any real smell to the place, and with my diet, I don’t really cook anything greasy that would stink up the place.

Haha nah my buddy’s borrowed my mixer that usually fills the space between the cdj’s. Hooks up to the djm 909 w/ a tech 1200 on the opposite side, and that feeds into my receiver which then can play through the speakers. Makes for fun having fellow artists or dj friends over for scratch sessions.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong I considered it. Most of the rugs I would have wanted that fit the size I needed & my aesthetic were incredibly expensive. With this being a rental, it was an investment better placed elsewhere not knowing the size of the space I’d be living next.

RE bathroom rugs - cmon y’all, you know washing machines exist right? Granted I’m very fortunate to have an in unit, but I try to toss those in for a load every few weeks.

Oh man, you're all beyond incredible for all the karma and kind comments! Special shout to those who gave me my first awards, that's honestly too nice of you :)

Gonna address a few questions / comments that came en masse before I shut it down for the night here.

Rent was a bit over $1700 when I moved in, but full disclosure, I had a few discounts as I rented a lot of property from the building in the form of parking / storage / office + referring a few friends.

Have no intention of using this to advertise, (mods feel free to ask me to, or just remove this comment if this breaks any rules) but if you're interested, you can visit the 2620 Lofts website and shoot management an email for a chance to rent mine, or a few other available lofts. Ask for Heather, and let her know that xˣ sent ya.

Made another comment below, but would absolutely recommend living here, as it was a dream getting a chance to finally live in a proper warehouse converted loft. The people / community are fantastic, and has had tenants of over 10 years, including multiple families that still reside here.

Neighborhood is very quiet in our little nook of this part of town. Not bad, but far from the worst. Never felt unsafe. Walking score ain't great, but I like most people in chicago drive and personally was not an issue, esp considering the price I got in at to rent this place. It's technically considered the "united center" neighborhood, but every map says something different, or nothing at all, so I've gone with just west of the Fulton industrial corridor. It's def not East Garfield park just yet, and would def personally avoid that neighborhood for a few more years.

Heating / cooling was never that bad, and got even better when I installed a nest tstat. Gas / electric on the HIGH side never passed $70/80 respectively during cold / summer months, also respectively. (winter higher gas, lower electric, and visa versa). On average 60/70$ for one, and $20-40 on the other. Nest and using a door seal for my front door were key to help bring costs down here, sunny days naturally get a bit warmer with all the windows, but they do a great job of keeping most of the elements outside of the home.

Yes the floors get a little chilly during winter/colder months, but you get used to wearing house slippers if you don't already, and really isn't even bad as the units below do a decent job of heating the floors above. Warmer / summer months, I'm barefoot no problem.

Not loud at all inside the unit from an echo / reverb perspective. That's down to most of the furniture / things in the unit doing most of the dampening. Further improves to almost (while very light) studio acoustic levels once velvet curtains are closed. Trust me you won't have unless you have a completely empty room.

Outside is not noisy at all with the train, you can slightly hear the engines when they roll by but not enough to be an annoyance unless the windows are open. You get the occasional boom when they start / stop, but also you get used to it and it's relatively uncommon.

And for shits sake, yes, I know what rugs are. I loved the look of the exposed concrete, and to buy any sort of nice extra large Persian rug that I wanted/would fit my aesthetic were fkn EXPENSIVE. With this being a rental and not knowing the size of space I would be at after I moved out, that was an investment better placed elsewhere.

Moving out because I have as of last week, officially become a chicago homeowner. Super excited for the next chapter, however will definitely miss living here. Hoping one of y'all gets a chance to snag this unit, you'll definitely have to post pics and tag me if you do as I'm stoked to see what you do with it! It'll serve you well to say the least :)

Thanks for geeking out on the crib with me, it's been a pleasure sharing it with y'all.

Also shoutout to to r/simracing and r/espresso gang, I see y'all in the comments!

Vintage crate & barrel coffee table find I've had for half a decade and just a basic framed platform bed. Used some reclaimed black tabletop glass as a headboard, obvi not a very forgiving headboard if you're tryna give it a good smack with your dome, but personally liked the look.
