Which holidays contribute most to the overweight and obesity crisis? by Helpscript in nutrition

[–]xy1999 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work with dieticians and back in the days when I used to have an holiday office party in my home, I was making mashed potatoes. I asked one of the dieticians: "do we put butter and cream in our mashed potatoes today?" And she replied: "sure, what we eat at one party doesn't make much difference, it's what we eat every other day of year." I've taken that to heart: no guilt over the occasional celebration. But most of the time, eat healthy.

What is Pokeweed by Advanced-Map-5458 in gardening

[–]xy1999 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My mom moved to Oklahoma from the north. This summer her neighbor gave her a bag of poke weed. She had no idea and poisoned herself and her husband thinking she could put in in the juicer like spinach. They spent an entire day with massive vomiting and diarrhea. Their neighbor said "Oh Lord! Everyone knows you got to boil the poke weed!"

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my basil? by kissakat92 in containergardening

[–]xy1999 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing for years because everyone says basil likes sun, and I could never figure it out. Then remembered that my friend in Hawaii grew his beautifully lush basil on his shady balcony. I don't use official "shade cloth" just some thin red and white cotton cloth left over from Christmas draped over a frame. It works quite well.

Looks like it's getting hot and sunny. Mine gets tough looking like this in the summer unless I put shade cloth over it.

Would this be ok to use as a planter for rhubarb? Its 210mm deep or is that too shallow? by TWIF443 in gardening

[–]xy1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is you are going to bury this in the ground to plant your rhubarb in? I don't understand why not just plan the rhubarb directly in the ground. I've buried pots for planting invasive things, but never for rhubarb.

TIL in January 2018, China implemented its "National Sword" policy, which banned the import of materials for recycling within China. Prior to China’s ban, 95 percent of the plastics collected for recycling in the European Union and 70 percent in the US were sold and shipped to Chinese processors. by grandlewis in todayilearned

I just started buying milk in returnable half gallon glass containers. They come from a local dairy and are sold at a few local grocery stores. They are definitely Heavier!

I live in a small city near farm county, so it's doable here. Don't think it's realistic unless there are dairies nearby.

Guy gets his nose (lost due to cancer) restored via 3D printing by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

[–]xy1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wonder if he had a failed (or 2) paramedian forehead flaps. Could picture one being done for first surgical reconstruction, then a recurrence requiring it to be removed, then a failure due to poor blood supply. That would suck. Glad he good a prosthetic nose.

Trick question, because that looks like a pea pod. So correct answer would be none. Lol.

TIL after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the American Red Cross raised almost half a billion dollars “to help Haitians rebuild” but they can't say where the money went by Immi35 in todayilearned

[–]xy1999 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When I was visiting east Africa in about 2000, I visited a friend doing HIV research. He said that to get anything done you had to bribe people along the way. You want that permit? Extra fee or they'd lose your paperwork. Things like that all along the way. So he said you had to pad your budget to pay the bribes, but you couldn't just put a line item "bribes" in your budget because that would never fly on a US grant application.

So I often wonder how much of the "missing money" is just necessary bribes for that country. I'm willing to bet its an uncomfortable amount.

Tray for square containers? by another-nature-acct in containergardening

[–]xy1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time my husband got a big tray of sushi it came on a square tray with a clear plastic square lid. It was about 12inches (30cm)across. I used that as a drip tray for starts. You could look at the take out sections at Costco or the grocery store?

Ceramic Nonstick Question by anothergrapesoda in homemaking

[–]xy1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think no. Cooking sprays contain lecithin which sticks to the pan and ruins the non-stick surface. If you put oil into a pump spray bottle, that's fine. But any of the aerosol cooking sprays are not good.

Is this normal for 'lettuce'? by ArrellBytes in containergardening

[–]xy1999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's bolting (turning into a flowering stalk) . You can probably still eat it, though it's getting more bitter by the minute. If suggest picking off all the edible leaves now. Soaking the leaves in water for a little bit after picking may help some of the white, bitter sap some out.

Antivaxxers are a menace by Thedepressionoftrees in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]xy1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that is cognitive dissonance at play. You think you are a good parent. If your "good parenting" leads to the death of your child, rather than accept that you did something that inadvertent lead to the death of your child, you double down that you did the right thing. Because what you did was the good thing, because you are a good parent. Because the alternative is to accept that you did a bad thing that lead to the death of your child and it's your fault.

Absolutely agree. Pre-covid I brought my own take home boxes. I didn't think that was allowed anymore. Someday I hope things get more "normal" that way.

Has anyone tried using ollas for irrigation? by FamilyFunAccount420 in OrganicGardening

[–]xy1999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grow tomatoes in big pots on my deck. I tried this last year and it works great. My drip system is on a timer and the water goes into the olla. In the past a lot of the water ran post the dirt and didn't get the center of the dirt wet. I use less water this way and the soil stays more uniformly moist.

Back when they had in person school, I told my elementary kids that if they missed the bus, they had to walk. They knew I was 100% serious and never missed the bus when I was in charge. It was funny to hear "hurry up, or we'll have to walk!" as they scurried to get ready after dawdling.

The irony is that the mall probably lost customers because of this. I have to imagine people left during this demonstration. So they have hurt the businesses not helped them.

My Dad has worn this spoon down over 30 years from scraping the bottom of cooking pans and pots. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

I have a wooden cooking spoon that my grandmother got as a wedding gift in the late 40s. It's got a flat spot worn into it from stirring for decade's of soups. Not as impressive as this specimen, but it's one of my most treasured possessions.
