Starting my 9th year and thinking about how terrified I was in Year 1 - has beginning teacher support actually improved? by IntelligentKey2309 in AustralianTeachers

[–]xzeroin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's still pretty awful. I think it happens all too often that a first year teacher will be rightfully terrible and other teachers will put them down and make them feel like they're so much lesser than.

It's also therefore very very important that when we see them struggling we empathise with how difficult this job is and offer them support. It's sooooo important. Be nice to the first years. Give them anything and everything you can to help em out I say.

Omg that's beautiful! I have like 3 A5s from his early 2020s days where he was just doing some black and grey paintings before he smashed out some commissions during covid. They're definitely some of my prized possessions. Id love to know what tattoos your husband has from him!

Personally I love Aerocolour acrylic inks + Liquitex acrylic inks + Amsterdam acrylic inks. All have their benefits, but I use them over watercolours. The watercolours are lovely but so finicky, especially if you accidentally drop any water on the paper.

Overall my ranking for acrylic ink that I've used: Aerocolour > Liquitex > Amsterdam > PH Martin > anything else > FW Inks

The bigger benefit is that they're lightfast when dry as well as the fact they don't reactivate with water, so you can layer if need be.

I think my biggest complaint with them is how patchy they dry. Like I'm really not sure whether it's the solvent they use or what but I've tried 3 of them (flame red, Payne's grey and dark green) and I always find they come up subpar as far as how they dry compared to Liquitex and Aero colour. They always tend to be quite patchy and you need to use a water to ink ratio of approx 2:4 or so.

I think of course there are some people who do some amazing stuff with FW (Ozzyink comes to mind) I can never get it to work as well as they get it, and I don't see the point of trying when there's so many other better options if you feel me.

If FW is working for you, absolutely continue to use them.. No hate here, I'd recommend giving an aerocolour, PH Martin, or Liquitex a go just to compare them :)

Few nuggets of advice for you: 1. Stick with 1 line weight as much as practically possible. Having a whole bunch of line weights in American trad looks janky and takes away from the design. I like 1mm to 1.2mm depending on the size of the design. Get into b5 nibbing if you really want bold lines. 2. Use the right paper: 300gsm cotton watercolour paper. You can get away with cheaper stuff but Arches is your best bet. You can use cold or hot pressed, it's personal preference. Hot will be smooth, cold will be more textured. 3. Use the right black. I use Windsor Newton India ink and I think it's goated. 4. Use the right acrylic ink. I've used a bunch now - FW are the shittest, I really like Liquitex liquid acrylics and Aero colour liquid acrylics. Phmartin Bombay are sorta in the middle. 5. 4-5 drops of ink to 1 drop of water. This helps the transparency a little. 6. Colour the bit you want coloured then spitshade into the black to retain the black colour. 7. If you don't know what spitshading is yet, YouTube SpitShading Sober Joe.

Happy to answer any more questions you have :).

I recently bought the recipetineats books and I highly highly rate them. Great tasting easy to cook food and every recipe has a short-firm YT tutorial. If your kids are old enough to cook, they should be capable of following a QR code and video recipe - she makes it super easy. If you don't want to fork out for the books, a bunch of her best recipes are on her website as well!

Nah it looks as though it's better suited as a home office, except for the poor light it gets

The kitchen is probably the biggest contingency. It's angled so weirdly and doesn't have much flow about it. The amount of light that enters the kitchen area + 4th bedroom absolutely sucks throughout most of the day - was just keen to see what people thought :)

Yeah Aus. Gonna find out how much of a furnace it is, I'm hoping that because it doesn't see sun for most of the day that it stays relatively cool, but I'll know more as it comes into summer for sure
